Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the latest wave of attacks in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, where several communities were left in mourning.

In a statement on Friday via X, Obi condemned the killings in five Bokkos communities—Mangor Tamiso, Daffo, Manguna, Hurti, and Tadai—lamenting that victims, including children and pregnant women, were buried in mass graves.

“I woke up this morning reading about yet another gory and deeply distressing report from Bokkos, Plateau State. Entire families have again, been slaughtered in yet another senseless attack. Children and pregnant women were not spared,” Obi said.

He questioned the rising insecurity across the country, asking why such violence has been normalized.

“How long will these killings, kidnapping, maiming, and criminality continue in our nation that is not at war? How long must we wait to act decisively and focus on this drastic situation that is crippling our nation? How many more must die before the government acts for the people?” he queried.

Obi further noted that communities nationwide live in fear, unable to farm or trade safely, citing similar incidents in Benue, Enugu, Ondo, and Anambra.

“Communities like Bokkos in Plateau, Jato-Aka in Benue, Eha-Amufu in Enugu, Ufuma in Anambra, and Aba Oyinbo in Ondo deserve government protection,” he stated. “We must end this grief and terror, as this is becoming extremely unacceptable.”

Calling on the government and security agencies to take decisive action, Obi insisted that perpetrators must be held accountable.

“The government and security agencies must ensure that these killings are stopped, concrete steps are made to prevent future occurrences, and those arrested face the justice they deserve,” he added.

Offering his condolences, he said, “My heart goes to the people of Bokkos, and others in various communities. No Nigerian should live in fear as the government must do what it takes to protect Nigerians.”

The latest attack, which began on Wednesday, left ten people dead and 18 others hospitalized. The Chairman of Community Peace Observers in Bokkos LGA, Mr. Kefas Mallai, confirmed that gunmen invaded Tamiso village around 9 a.m. while women were holding a Christian fellowship meeting at a COCIN church, causing panic and displacement among residents.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, in Zamfara State, Surajo Garba Maikatako, has described the party’s reported deregistration as a temporary legal hurdle, urging supporters to remain committed to the ideals of democracy.
Maikatako said this in a statement issued on Sunday in Gusau, where he reassured party members and supporters that the NDC remains a legally recognised and operational political party.

According to him, the party’s leadership had clarified that the NDC had not been deregistered and remained committed to democratic governance and service to Nigerians.

“The recent ruling by the Federal High Court is a decision we view as a temporary legal hurdle, not a death knell,” he said.

The state chairman maintained that the party had complied with all constitutional and legal requirements, adding that its structures remained intact from the polling unit level to the national level.

He also stated that the party’s candidates remained valid and that preparations for the 2027 general elections were ongoing.

Maikatako called on supporters in Zamfara State to remain calm, united and focused, insisting that the development should not discourage members of the party.

He further expressed confidence in the leadership of the party at the national level, describing its governorship candidate in Zamfara State, Senator Kabiru Marafa, as a key figure in the party’s political aspirations.

The chairman urged members to remain steadfast while the party pursues available legal options regarding the court ruling.

Sunday Dare, spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu on media and communications, has defended First Lady Remi Tinubu over her comment encouraging Nigerians, especially women, to start roasted corn, akara, kuli-kuli and other small-scale businesses.

After hosting the wives of the 36 governors in Abuja last week, Mrs Tinubu highlighted the financial interventions provided through her office to vulnerable Nigerians in line with the Mr Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Her comment had generated widespread reactions from Nigerians who accused Mrs Tinubu of being insensitive to the plight of Nigerians.

Mr Dare, in an interview on Mic on Podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye on Saturday, however, said Mrs Tinubu did not miss any point, insisting she was advising Nigerians to get some level of entrepreneurial skills.

“She didn’t miss her point. Her point is that whatever it is, try and do something. Have some level of entrepreneurial skills.

“When you look at the informal sector whose resilience continues to lift this economy; it’s because of these small-scale entrepreneurs that sell akara because we find it predominantly everywhere and also in the north. They are also significant,” Mr Dare stated.

Citing his own experience and that of the business tycoon Aliko Dangote, Mr Dare urged Nigerians to get engaged in any legitmate enterprise, however small, amid the biting hardship in the country.

“Look at me today. Whenever I am today, my mother sold akara and banana. I carried banana on the tray in my head to markets in Jos, Plateau State. My mother sold oranges. And through that, they were able to train me. What’s wrong with that if that was right 60 years ago? Because it’s about the capital you have to grow these businesses by starting small.

“Go and read Dangote’s story. Go and read how he started from? He also started like a small trader. So the point the first lady is making is, whatever it is, be engaged in some kind of enterprise,” he added.

Meanwhile, human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, berated Mrs Tinubu over her comment, asking her to first venture into the business to encourage other Nigerian women.

“Senator Remi Tinubu should first set up Corn, Akara and Kuli Kuli business for some members of her family and the APC women leaders. It will encourage other Nigerians to venture into the same business,” Mr Effiong said in a statement on X on Saturday.
