Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State

The Secretary of the Government of Plateau State, Mr. Samuel Jatau, has called on the youth of the State to maintain peace and refrain from participating in the planned protest on August 1.

During a meeting on Tuesday in Jos, Mr. Jatau, accompanied by Mr. Jeremiah Satmak, the Chief of Staff to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, engaged with youth leaders from the 17 local government areas. He urged them to exercise patience as various levels of government work to address the nation’s challenges.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, Mr. Jatau said, “We just addressed the wonderful Plateau youth leaders with a simple message: Plateau youths should say no to protest. We explained the need for patience with the government of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Caleb Mutfwang. This administration has only been in office for a year and inherited a nation burdened with debt. It’s not easy to resolve these issues overnight. Although there is hardship, food is expensive, and everyone is facing difficulties, the government is taking steps to ease these problems.

“As a State, the Governor is actively working to address these issues. We are currently in the planting season, and soon it will be harvest time, which will bring some relief. Historically, protests in Plateau have a thin line that can quickly turn violent, and we want to avoid that. We are tired of violence and seek to promote peace to enhance tourism and change the narrative in the State.”

Echoing this sentiment, Pololis Gyang, Youth Leader of the Rock Haven community in Jos, urged youths to shun the protest for the sake of peace and security in the State.

“We in Plateau State unequivocally dissociate ourselves from the anticipated protest due to the ambiguous and unclear circumstances surrounding it,” Mr. Gyang stated. “We cannot ignore the motives behind those calling for the nationwide protest. We acknowledge the widespread hunger, hardship, and uncertainty regarding the state of our economy. However, the suspicious manner in which the protest is being orchestrated raises significant concerns.

“We call on our beloved Plateau youths to desist from joining a protest that undermines the relative peace in the State. We also urge our people to protect their communities from elements seeking to cause pandemonium.”

There was pandemonium in Maraban Jos in Kaduna State after mob set ablaze a woman identified as Malama Ummulkhairi over allegations of child theft that have not been substantiated.

The incident has triggered outrage across the state and renewed concerns about the growing menace of jungle justice, lawlessness and the dangerous spread of mob violence fueled by rumours and misinformation.

The deceased, an Islamic teacher and mother of more than five children was said to have  travelled from the New Maraban Jos area to attend an Islamic lecture reportedly organised at a local school in the old Maraban Jos axis.

She allegedly lost her way after being separated from some of her companions and sought directions from children in the neighbourhood.

Shortly afterwards, some residents reportedly accused her of attempting to steal children, an allegation that witnesses and relatives insist was entirely baseless.

As tension escalated, a crowd gathered and the woman was reportedly taken to a nearby police station for her protection and investigation.

A statement on Sunday by the Kaduna State Police Command confirmed that a large mob later stormed the police station, overwhelmed officers on duty and forcibly removed the woman from protective custody.

The police said that the mob subsequently killed her and set her body ablaze in what observers have described as one of the most barbaric acts of jungle justice witnessed in recent times.

Governor Oyebanji secured a commanding victory at the polls, defeating his closest challengers with a wide margin in an election that reaffirmed the confidence of Ekiti voters in his administration.

Reacting to the result, Prince Kekere-Ekun congratulated the governor, saying the victory reflected the people’s appreciation of his performance in office.

“I congratulate His Excellency, Governor Biodun Oyebanji, on this well-deserved victory. The people have spoken clearly, and they have chosen continuity because they have seen results. This is a victory for every Ekiti son and daughter who believes in progress, peace and development.”

The businessman and philanthropist, who was seen on the campaign trail with party leaders and supporters throughout the election period, said he was proud to have identified with a campaign built around performance and continuity.

“I joined this campaign because I believe in purposeful leadership. Governor Oyebanji has demonstrated capacity, humility and a genuine commitment to the welfare of the people. Supporting him was never about politics alone—it was about supporting good governance.”

Prince Kekere-Ekun also commended APC supporters across the state for conducting themselves peacefully throughout the election.

“I want to thank the people of Ekiti for demonstrating political maturity. Democracy thrives when citizens participate peacefully, and this election has once again shown the strength of our democratic process.”

He urged residents to put politics behind them and support the governor as he begins another term in office.

“Now that the election is over, it is time for everyone to unite behind Governor Oyebanji. Development requires collective effort, and I have no doubt that greater achievements lie ahead for Ekiti State.”

Known across Nigeria as “The King of Small Chops” for building the Saheeto Signature brand into one of the country’s leading hospitality names, Prince Saheed Kekere-Ekun has also remained actively engaged in public affairs and community development, often lending his voice and support to initiatives that promote progress and national development.

With Governor Oyebanji’s decisive victory now confirmed, Kekere-Ekun says his hope is that the renewed mandate will translate into even greater prosperity for the people of Ekiti.

“The work continues. I wish His Excellency wisdom, strength and God’s guidance as he leads Ekiti into another chapter of growth and development.”
