A former Director-General of the Progressive Governors Forum, Salihu Lukman, has stated that a framework is being established to ensure that the opposition presents a single candidate to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2027 elections.
He emphasized that opposition parties need to recognize that their battle is not with one another but with the APC and its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

In an interview with Arise News, Lukman, who previously held a prominent position within the APC, said a proposal had been put forward for the consideration of opposition leaders.

He added that the objective was to create a structure that would allow them to function as a cohesive unit, enabling them to present a united front to the Nigerian electorate by the time of the 2027 elections.

He said, “The ultimate objective is that we want to have one candidate, but it cannot be by declaration. They have to sit down and agree on the criteria they are going to apply in determining that candidate. They will agree among themselves.

“Nobody will dictate it to them, which is why, if you put the question to the supporters of each of the candidates, again, you are not being fair to the candidates, because, at the end of the day, it is the quality of the relationship.
“We have posed the question to them, and, for emphasis, let me remind you of the question we have posed to them. At the end of the day, there will only be one president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The question they need to answer themselves is: Do they just want to be candidates, or do they want to win the election to become president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria?

“I mean, answering that question will require that they also agree that there are certain conditions they must meet to be able to win the election. That is the point we are now trying to push them to understand, and all of them understand it.

“They have to work together, and the primary opponent is the APC and President Bola Tinubu. So, when you now begin to pose the question as if the primary opponent is either former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or former Governor Peter Obi, you get it wrong.
“As far as we are concerned, we are putting forward a structure, and we are putting a proposal to them to consider, which will lead to the formation of that structure that will enable them to work as a united body, on the basis of which, by the 2027 election, they will present Nigerians with a united front.

“Look, the bottom line, and let me say it for emphasis, is that we believe Nigerians deserve better.

“We believe that the 2027 election should present a credible option for Nigeria in such a way that Nigerians can have confidence to queue behind that candidate, vote for that candidate, and vote out the APC and President Bola Tinubu. I think there is no debate about that.”

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has revealed how he reduced the cost of governance while serving as governor of Anambra State.

According to the politician, he deliberately avoided unnecessary spending and travelled without the large entourage usually associated with public officials.

Obi disclosed this on Monday while speaking in Washington, D.C., United States, where he discussed measures he adopted to reduce government expenditure during his tenure as governor.

The former Anambra State governor said he rejected inflated budgets for the renovation of his official facilities, explaining that projects were completed for significantly less than the amounts originally provided for in the budget.

“When I was governor, the budget for refurbishing my office was ₦298 million, but I did everything with ₦48 million. There was also a budget of ₦486 million to refurbish my house, but I completed everything with ₦81 million,” Obi said.

He also spoke about the cost associated with official travels, saying he refused to travel with the number of people that could ordinarily accompany a governor on official trips.

“As a governor, you are supposed to travel with 30 people to several places. Over the years I was governor, I didn’t use 16 percent of my travel allowance because I wasn’t travelling with anybody. I was the only person invited; nobody invited them,” he said.

The NDC candidate has repeatedly argued that Nigeria’s limited resources should be directed towards productive sectors capable of improving the living conditions of citizens.

The former governor recently travelled to Germany and the United Kingdom for a series of engagements focused on issues including democracy, electoral integrity, poverty, education, corruption and healthcare.

Obi disclosed the European trip in a statement on his social media platforms after returning to Abuja from visits to Benue and Plateau states.

“After returning to Abuja on 8th September 2026, following our visits to Benue and Plateau States, I travelled to Europe, first to Germany and then to the United Kingdom,” he stated.

According to Obi, his discussions with international partners centred on practical steps that could contribute to Nigeria’s development, with particular attention to education.

He said he was encouraged by the willingness of international partners to support Nigeria, especially in the education sector.

Obi described education as the most important investment Nigeria could make in its citizens, stressing that sustainable national development would remain difficult without building the knowledge, skills and capabilities of the country’s people.

He also renewed his call for a change in the direction of Nigeria’s economy, urging the country to move away from excessive consumption and dependence.

“We must intentionally transition Nigeria from consumption to production, from dependence to productivity, from wasteful practices to responsible resource management, and from division to a common national purpose,” he said.

The NDC presidential candidate said his broader objective was to build a country where children would have access to quality education, democracy would reflect the wishes of voters, healthcare would be accessible and public resources would be managed responsibly.

He added that every Nigerian should have a fair opportunity to live a dignified and productive life.

Obi’s latest engagements come as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with major presidential contenders increasingly stepping up consultations and engagements within and outside Nigeria.

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has also travelled to the United States and Canada as part of a North American tour connected to his 2027 campaign.

The AAC said Sowore’s absence from Nigeria would not affect the #Sowore2027 campaign, maintaining that its activities would continue to focus on what it described as revolutionary transformation, equal rights and justice.

President Bola Tinubu has also travelled to Europe, with the Presidency saying the President departed Abuja for a three-week vacation as part of his annual leave.

His Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Tinubu’s first destination was London, United Kingdom, and that he would return to Nigeria at the end of the working vacation.

The political movements are taking place against the backdrop of preparations for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections. The Independent National Electoral Commission commenced the official campaign period on August 19, while the elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027.

EuroMatch NPFL: “I’m Going Back Home To Put Everything Right” — Uzoho Refuses To Panic After Six-Goal Bendel Battle

Kun Khalifat FC head coach Obinna Uzoho is refusing to allow one difficult afternoon in Benin to define his team’s 2026/27 EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League campaign.

After watching Kun Khalifat suffer a 4-2 defeat to Bendel Insurance on Matchday Three, Uzoho’s message was not one of surrender or panic.

It was about work.

It was about improvement.

And, perhaps most importantly, it was about remembering just how much football remains to be played.

> “I’m going back home to make sure we put everything right. You know, this season has just gotten started.”

Those words capture the mentality of a coach who understands that the EuroMatch NPFL is a marathon and that one difficult result in September cannot be allowed to determine what happens over an entire campaign.

Uzoho also revealed the personal motivation driving him this season.

“I want to do more this season because last season was tough for me.”

Put the two statements together and the message becomes clear:

Last season provided the lessons. This season is his opportunity to respond.

From two clean sheets to six-goal reality check

Kun Khalifat travelled to the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium with one of the most intriguing defensive records in the league.

They had played twice.

They had conceded zero goals.

Their opening encounter against Abia Warriors finished 0-0 before another goalless draw against Barau FC on Matchday Two.

Then Bendel Insurance changed everything.

The Benin Arsenal put four past Kun Khalifat in a dramatic 4-2 victory, ending the visitors’ perfect defensive record and handing them their first defeat of the campaign.

But hidden inside the disappointment was another first.

Kun Khalifat finally scored. Twice.

So Uzoho now returns home with something very specific to solve.

How does he recover the defensive discipline that produced consecutive clean sheets while retaining the attacking threat that finally appeared in Benin?

That could become one of the interesting tactical stories of their next few matches.

“This season has just gotten started”

Perhaps the most significant part of Uzoho’s reaction was his refusal to treat Matchday Three like a crisis.

Three games represent only a tiny fraction of an EuroMatch NPFL season.

There will be victories.

There will be defeats.

There will be afternoons when everything a coach planned works perfectly — and others when four goals disappear into his net.

What matters is what happens afterwards.

Uzoho’s response suggests he already understands his next assignment.

Go home. Identify what went wrong. Put it right. Go again.

That is football management stripped down to its essentials.

And his reference to last season adds a personal dimension.

Uzoho isn’t merely attempting to improve Kun Khalifat.

He wants to improve himself.

That makes his journey another one worth following as this EuroMatch NPFL campaign develops.

The league’s entertainment does not belong exclusively to the goalscorers.

Behind every result is a coach making decisions, dealing with pressure, protecting players, accepting criticism and trying to find an answer before the next whistle.

For Uzoho, the answer to a 4-2 defeat will not be found in Benin anymore.

It will be found back on the training ground.

And after only three Matchdays, he knows there is plenty of road remaining.

“I’m going back home to make sure we put everything right.”

That is the promise.

“This season has just gotten started.”

That is the warning.

For Kun Khalifat, the next chapter of their EuroMatch NPFL story begins with how Obinna Uzoho and his players respond.
