Plateau APC Declares It’s No Longer in Opposition as Labour Party Rep, Daniel Asama, Joins Ruling Party

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State has welcomed the defection of Daniel Asama, a member of the House of Representatives representing Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency, declaring that the party is no longer in opposition in the state.

Asama, who was elected on the platform of the Labour Party, officially joined the APC alongside five other lawmakers from Enugu State during plenary on Thursday. Their letters of defection were read by the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas.

In a statement issued by the APC’s Publicity Secretary, Shittu Bamaiyi, the party described Asama’s defection as a major boost and a reflection of the growing appeal of the APC in Plateau State.

“The APC on the Plateau is home and dry. Hon. Asama, formerly of the Labour Party, amid a standing ovation on the floor of the Green Chamber this afternoon, decided to cross over to the APC in view of what he described as President Tinubu’s outstanding performance and the appointment of Dr Bernard Doro as a minister-designate,” Bamaiyi said.

He added that the influx of “politicians of substance” into the APC shows that the party’s influence is expanding rapidly across the state.

“The APC is profoundly elated and encouraged by the influx of politicians of substance who have continued to cross over to the party in Plateau State in recent times,” he stated.

With the state legislature reportedly 99 percent controlled by APC members, Bamaiyi said the development cements the party’s dominance in Plateau politics.

“This development, coupled with the fact that the state legislature is 99 percent controlled by the APC, gives weight to the claim that the party is no longer in opposition in the state,” he added.

Bamaiyi also credited Dr Nentawe Yilwatda, the party’s National Chairman, for reshaping Plateau’s political landscape in favour of the APC.

“Since the election of Dr Nentawe Yilwatda as the National Chairman of the APC, there has been a major shift in political calculations in favour of the party in the state,” he said.

The party further hinted that more defections are expected soon, amid rumours that four members of the state executive council may also join the ruling party.

“While welcoming Hon. Asama on board, rumours are rife that four members of the state executive council, whose identities remain under wraps, will soon join the bandwagon,” Bamaiyi added.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Osun State Council, has condemned the rising wave of political violence ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.

The union also warned that the trend poses a serious threat to peace, public safety and the democratic process.

The Council expressed concern over increasing reports of killings, intimidation and destruction of property linked to political activities, saying the situation could undermine the credibility of the election if urgent steps were not taken to curb the violence.

In a statement jointly signed by the Osun NUJ Chairman, Adeyemi Aboderin, and the Secretary, Olalekan Akindoju, the union cited a report by the Kimpact Development Initiative, KDI, which recorded 44 election-related violent incidents across the state between October 2025 and June 2026.

According to the statement, the incidents reportedly resulted in the deaths of 13 people, a development the Council described as alarming and requiring immediate intervention by all stakeholders.

“The figures should serve as a wake-up call to all stakeholders. No political ambition is worth the loss of human lives,” the statement said.

The Council called on security agencies to intensify efforts to prevent further violence by protecting lives and property, maintaining professionalism and impartiality, and ensuring that those responsible for violent acts were brought to justice regardless of their political affiliations.

It also urged political parties, governorship candidates and their supporters to conduct peaceful campaigns centred on issues affecting the people, rather than engaging in actions capable of fuelling unrest.

“The NUJ cautions political leaders against making inflammatory statements that could incite violence. They have a responsibility to restrain their supporters and place the interests of Osun State above partisan considerations.

“The Council appeals to residents, particularly young people, not to allow themselves to be used as agents of political violence or intimidation during the electioneering period,” the statement added.

It emphasised that the lives and future of the state’s youth should not be sacrificed for political interests, urging them to reject any attempt to lure them into unlawful activities.

The NUJ reaffirmed the commitment of journalists in Osun State to promoting responsible journalism, factual reporting and public enlightenment throughout the governorship election campaign.

It also called on media practitioners to uphold the ethics of the profession by avoiding sensational reports capable of escalating political tension, while encouraging balanced and accurate coverage of political activities across the state.

Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, on Thursday paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his residence in Kano State.

Obasanjo was received by Kwankwaso alongside the NDC governorship candidate in Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo.

The visit was confirmed in a statement issued by Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, who described the meeting as an occasion for cordial interactions and warm exchanges between the political leaders.

However, details of the discussions held during the closed-door meeting were not disclosed.

Kwankwaso, who served as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence during Obasanjo’s second term in office between 2003 and 2007, has maintained a longstanding political relationship with the former president.

The meeting has further fuelled speculations about possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly in light of reports suggesting efforts to strengthen opposition collaboration.

NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is widely regarded as a close ally of Obasanjo, who publicly supported him during the 2023 presidential election.
