The Plateau State Government has reopened public and private primary and secondary schools after a week-long closure over reported suspected diphtheria cases.

The government in the same vein warned against concealing suspected cases.

The resumption was announced in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Lohya Ramnap, on Friday, September 11, 2026.

The schools were temporarily closed from September 7 as a precautionary measure to allow the government assess the situation and strengthen surveillance and response measures.

According to the statement, schools across the state are to resume academic activities on Monday, September 14.

The government said measures had been put in place to reduce the risk of transmission, while school authorities were directed to maintain clean and hygienic learning environments.

“All school authorities are expected to have basic precautionary measures, maintain a clean and hygienic learning environment,” the statement said.

Teachers and school management were also urged to remain alert to symptoms and promptly report suspected cases to health authorities.

Parents and guardians were advised to encourage regular handwashing, keep their surroundings clean and seek medical attention where symptoms are noticed.

The government further warned against self-medication or concealing suspected cases, stressing the importance of early detection and treatment.

It urged parents, teachers, school proprietors and students to follow the health advisories as schools resume on Monday.

Nigerian youngster Raymond Okon has completed a move to Israeli top-flight club Hapoel Jerusalem, beginning a new chapter in European football after his time with Nigerian academy P Sport.

The young midfielder is now part of Hapoel Jerusalem’s squad for the 2026/27 Israeli Premier League campaign, where he will continue his development against some of the best teams in Israeli football.

Okon, who is listed as a central midfielder, wears the No. 60 shirt at Hapoel Jerusalem. Current squad records also confirm his Nigerian nationality and inclusion in the club’s first-team setup.

The move represents a significant step for the youngster, taking him from the Nigerian academy system into European professional football.

Born in 2008, Okon is still only 18, giving him considerable time to develop his game and establish himself at senior level. Current player records list him as a Nigerian midfielder and show his transfer to Hapoel Jerusalem in July 2026.

His early involvement with the club has already provided a taste of competitive football in Israel. Okon featured for Hapoel Jerusalem in the Toto Cup, completing the full 90 minutes in the club’s 2–2 draw against Hapoel Ramat Gan in August.

Hapoel Jerusalem compete in the Israeli Premier League, the country’s highest division, and play their home matches at the Teddy Stadium.

Okon’s arrival also adds to the Nigerian presence at the Jerusalem-based club, with Sani Abdulsalam and Andrew Idoko among other Nigerian players listed in the squad.

For the former P Sport academy player, the immediate challenge will be to adapt to the demands of senior European football, compete for regular playing time and continue developing his technical and tactical qualities.

At just 18, the move offers Okon an important platform to gain experience and make his mark in a competitive European league.
