The Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria has condemned the recent killings in Angwan Rukuba, Jos, in Plateau State, calling for urgent and decisive action from authorities.

In a press statement, the council expressed outrage and grief over what it described as the brutal killing of innocent citizens.

It said the incident highlights the fragile state of security in the country and the urgent need for government intervention.

The council warned that repeated condemnations without concrete action are no longer acceptable.
According to the statement, “statements without corresponding action have become painfully predictable and insufficient.”

It urged leaders and security agencies to go beyond rhetoric and demonstrate real commitment to ending the violence.

Citing Islamic teachings, the council stressed the sanctity of human life, noting that the killing of innocent people is a grave crime regardless of religion or ethnicity.

It added that such acts violate both moral and religious principles.

The group also suggested that the attack may have been carefully planned to trigger wider religious and communal tensions.

It raised concerns about the possible involvement of “well-funded and highly coordinated interest groups,” including foreign elements linked to arms proliferation and cross-border movements of fighters.

According to the council, such actors often exploit Nigeria’s socio-religious divisions to fuel conflict, weaken unity, and advance geopolitical interests.

It called for urgent identification and decisive action against both external sponsors and local collaborators.

The statement further highlighted the worsening insecurity across northern Nigeria, including insurgency and banditry, and paid tribute to security personnel who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The council extended condolences to the government and people of Plateau State, as well as families of victims, praying for strength for those affected.

It also urged religious leaders to promote peace and restraint among their followers.

It warned that “silence or neutrality in the face of incitement only emboldens perpetrators.”

The council called for a thorough and credible investigation into the attack and urged Nigerians to remain united, law-abiding, and vigilant.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, in Zamfara State, Surajo Garba Maikatako, has described the party’s reported deregistration as a temporary legal hurdle, urging supporters to remain committed to the ideals of democracy.
Maikatako said this in a statement issued on Sunday in Gusau, where he reassured party members and supporters that the NDC remains a legally recognised and operational political party.

According to him, the party’s leadership had clarified that the NDC had not been deregistered and remained committed to democratic governance and service to Nigerians.

“The recent ruling by the Federal High Court is a decision we view as a temporary legal hurdle, not a death knell,” he said.

The state chairman maintained that the party had complied with all constitutional and legal requirements, adding that its structures remained intact from the polling unit level to the national level.

He also stated that the party’s candidates remained valid and that preparations for the 2027 general elections were ongoing.

Maikatako called on supporters in Zamfara State to remain calm, united and focused, insisting that the development should not discourage members of the party.

He further expressed confidence in the leadership of the party at the national level, describing its governorship candidate in Zamfara State, Senator Kabiru Marafa, as a key figure in the party’s political aspirations.

The chairman urged members to remain steadfast while the party pursues available legal options regarding the court ruling.

Sunday Dare, spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu on media and communications, has defended First Lady Remi Tinubu over her comment encouraging Nigerians, especially women, to start roasted corn, akara, kuli-kuli and other small-scale businesses.

After hosting the wives of the 36 governors in Abuja last week, Mrs Tinubu highlighted the financial interventions provided through her office to vulnerable Nigerians in line with the Mr Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Her comment had generated widespread reactions from Nigerians who accused Mrs Tinubu of being insensitive to the plight of Nigerians.

Mr Dare, in an interview on Mic on Podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye on Saturday, however, said Mrs Tinubu did not miss any point, insisting she was advising Nigerians to get some level of entrepreneurial skills.

“She didn’t miss her point. Her point is that whatever it is, try and do something. Have some level of entrepreneurial skills.

“When you look at the informal sector whose resilience continues to lift this economy; it’s because of these small-scale entrepreneurs that sell akara because we find it predominantly everywhere and also in the north. They are also significant,” Mr Dare stated.

Citing his own experience and that of the business tycoon Aliko Dangote, Mr Dare urged Nigerians to get engaged in any legitmate enterprise, however small, amid the biting hardship in the country.

“Look at me today. Whenever I am today, my mother sold akara and banana. I carried banana on the tray in my head to markets in Jos, Plateau State. My mother sold oranges. And through that, they were able to train me. What’s wrong with that if that was right 60 years ago? Because it’s about the capital you have to grow these businesses by starting small.

“Go and read Dangote’s story. Go and read how he started from? He also started like a small trader. So the point the first lady is making is, whatever it is, be engaged in some kind of enterprise,” he added.

Meanwhile, human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, berated Mrs Tinubu over her comment, asking her to first venture into the business to encourage other Nigerian women.

“Senator Remi Tinubu should first set up Corn, Akara and Kuli Kuli business for some members of her family and the APC women leaders. It will encourage other Nigerians to venture into the same business,” Mr Effiong said in a statement on X on Saturday.
