Stakeholders from the Ron Chiefdom in Plateau State have rejected the proposed use of the 1974 Gazette as the basis for selecting a new Saf Ron, describing the move as outdated and potentially harmful to the legitimacy of the traditional institution.

The Ron Integrity Advocacy Group, representing elders, stakeholders, women and youths from the 11 districts of Ron Chiefdom, made the position known at a press briefing held on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Jos.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Chief Sunday J. Akuns, and Secretary, Hon. Chief Sylvanus M. Ayuba, the group appealed to Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang to urgently intervene in the ongoing selection process.

The group’s position followed an announcement reportedly made on Saturday, August 29, 2026, during a memorial Mass for the late Dah Lazarus Amashin Agai at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Bokkos.

According to the group, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, who represented the Commissioner at the event, announced that the government intended to proceed with the selection of the “Saf Ron-Kulere” based on the 1974 Gazette.

The stakeholders argued that applying the 1974 instrument without reviewing it against current realities could undermine the legitimacy and inclusiveness of the selection process.

One of their major concerns is the rotation clause between “Ron and Kulere,” which they said was created when the two areas constituted one chiefdom.

They argued that the basis for the rotation no longer exists following the creation of separate Kulere and Mushere chiefdoms.

The group also questioned the electoral college contained in the 1974 Gazette, which they said recognised only eight districts, compared with the 11 districts currently constituting Ron Chiefdom.

According to the stakeholders, relying on the old list could result in the inclusion of districts that are now under Kulere and Mushere Chiefdoms.

They further faulted the proposed process for failing to take into account the 2003 excision which, according to them, established Kulere and Mushere as separate chiefdoms.

The group consequently called on the Plateau State Government to convene an urgent stakeholders’ meeting to review the Baba S. G. Mafuyai Committee Report alongside relevant historical records.

They also demanded that the electoral college and selection process be updated to reflect the current 11 districts of Ron Chiefdom, insisting that the process should be guided by authentic Ron customs and traditions rather than administrative convenience or political considerations.

The stakeholders further called for the suspension of the current selection process until all historical and traditional questions surrounding the stool are properly resolved through consultation.

They warned that if the government insists on applying the 1974 Gazette in its entirety, then, for the sake of what they described as legal consistency, the excised Kulere and Mushere Chiefdoms would have to be dissolved.

“Our Cultural Heritage is not an Administrative Commodity, and the Saf Ron stool is not an experiment in outdated governance,” the group stated.

While stressing that it was seeking dialogue rather than confrontation, the Ron Integrity Advocacy Group urged Governor Mutfwang to personally intervene to prevent what it described as an irreversible and culturally damaging decision.

The group added that should the government proceed without addressing its concerns, it would pursue all lawful avenues to protect the integrity of the Ron traditional institution.

The statement was issued on behalf of elders, stakeholders, women and youths from the 11 districts of Ron Chiefdom.

Plateau United Face Early NPFL Setback as New Season Gets Underway

Plateau United

Plateau United have made a difficult start to the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, suffering a 2–0 defeat away to Rivers United on Matchday One.

The Jos-based side were unable to find the back of the net at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, with Abdulrasheed Dabai and Wasiu Falolu scoring for Rivers United to secure all three points for the hosts.

The defeat leaves Plateau United 19th on the 20-team NPFL table, with zero points, no goals scored and two conceded after the opening round of fixtures. Only Sporting Lagos sit below them, also without a point and with a -2 goal difference. (npfl.com.ng)

A difficult opening

Plateau United’s opening-day loss comes after the club finished 10th in the 2025/26 NPFL season, recording 15 wins, five draws and 18 defeats from 38 matches. They scored 39 goals and conceded 40, finishing the campaign with 50 points.

Their final league fixture of last season, however, ended on a positive note, as Victor Dawa scored in stoppage time to give Plateau United a 1–0 home victory over Kano Pillars on May 24.

The new campaign has therefore begun in contrasting fashion, with the team needing to quickly rediscover the resilience that helped them finish the previous season in the top half of the table.

Home opportunity against Kwara United

Plateau United will have an immediate opportunity to respond when they host Kwara United at the New Jos Stadium on Sunday, September 6.

The Matchday Two fixture is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., according to the official NPFL fixtures.

Kwara United also opened their campaign with a draw, playing out a 2–2 stalemate against Kano Pillars. They currently occupy ninth position with one point.

For Plateau United, the encounter represents more than an opportunity to register their first points of the season. A convincing home performance could provide an early psychological lift and prevent the team from becoming trapped near the foot of the table.

Plateau United’s current picture

After one match, Plateau United’s numbers are straightforward:

  • Position: 19th
  • Played: 1
  • Wins: 0
  • Draws: 0
  • Losses: 1
  • Goals scored: 0
  • Goals conceded: 2
  • Goal difference: -2
  • Points: 0 (npfl.com.ng)

With 37 matches still to play, the table is naturally too early to draw major conclusions. But the immediate task for the Peace Boys is clear: turn New Jos Stadium into a fortress and get their first points on the board against Kwara United.

The 2026/27 NPFL season only began on August 28, and the league is already showing how quickly fortunes can change. Plateau United will hope that their opening-day disappointment proves to be a temporary setback rather than the beginning of another difficult campaign.

IPMAN Urges FG to Intervene in Dangote Refinery Pricing to Reduce Petrol Cost

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has appealed to the Federal Government to intervene in the commercial operations and pricing of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in a bid to reduce the rising cost of petrol across the country.

The appeal followed a fresh increase in petrol pump prices, with the product now selling between ₦1,310 and ₦1,345 per litre in Abuja and neighbouring areas.

IPMAN National President, Abubakar Maigandi, made the call while reacting to the recent surge in petrol prices, which he attributed to upward adjustments in gantry and ex-depot prices by the Dangote Refinery and private depot operators.

Maigandi urged the Federal Government to engage domestic refiners and broker an agreement that would help bring down the cost of petrol for consumers.

He stressed that such government intervention should not be regarded as a return to the former fuel subsidy regime, but rather as a targeted measure to cushion the impact of rising energy costs.

“We are appealing to the Federal Government to broker a deal with Dangote Refinery to reduce fuel prices.

“The government should intervene with Nigerian refiners, and this will lead to a reduction in fuel prices. It is different from fuel subsidy. In a situation where there is difficulty, the government should step in,” Maigandi said.

According to IPMAN, strategic government engagement with domestic refiners could help stabilise petrol prices, reduce the impact of fluctuations in international crude oil prices and ease the burden of rising energy costs on households and businesses.

The association maintained that ensuring affordable and stable petrol prices remains critical to reducing transportation and operating costs across the country.
