Cultural Festivals Key to Restoring Peace in Plateau – Says Pankshin VC

The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Education, Pankshin, Prof. Noel Wannang, has said cultural revival and community heritage initiatives can play a crucial role in restoring peace and unity in Plateau State.

Wannang made the remark on Thursday in Jos while addressing journalists ahead of the Ngas Annual Festival of Arts and Culture, also known as Puusdung 2026, where he serves as Chairman of the Central Planning Committee.

Describing the festival as a symbol of identity and continuity, the Vice Chancellor said Puusdung represents more than a celebration.

“Puusdung is a sacred platform where tradition meets modernity, where elders pass down values to the younger generation, and where we proudly showcase the richness of Ngas heritage to the world,” he said.

The festival, now in its 38th year, is aimed at preserving Ngas culture, engaging young people, fostering unity and promoting the state’s tourism potential.

Wannang noted that the university would actively participate in the festival as part of its community service mandate, with students expected to feature prominently in the Unity Dance — a highlight event involving performers from all 17 local government areas.

He stressed that cultural festivals represent the totality of a people’s values and traditions, adding that this year’s three-day programme will include experts in history, arts and poetry to showcase aspects of Ngas life such as marriage customs and heritage practices.

“What we need now in Plateau is unity and peace,” he said, urging stakeholders, corporate bodies and government institutions to support the festival.

The event, themed “Ngas: Identity, Legacy and Continuity,” is scheduled for April and is expected to draw attention to the cultural and tourism potential of the state.

Also speaking, the Plateau State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Mrs. Ayuku Pwaspo, assured organisers of the media’s support, expressing optimism that the festival would promote unity, pride and broader national interest in Plateau’s cultural heritage.
