After 33 Years, Yahaya Kwande Becomes Longkwo of Kwo Chiefdom

After a 33-year struggle, Ambassador Miskoom Yahaya Kwande has finally emerged as the Longkwo of Kwo Chiefdom in Qua’an-Pan Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Kwande’s journey to the throne began in 1988 after the passing of Longkwo Miskoom Hoomkwap Sule II. Though selected in 1989, legal battles halted his installation. A second attempt in 2013 saw him enthroned but later dethroned after another lawsuit. Despite a Court of Appeal ruling affirming his eligibility, the stool remained vacant until 2021, when a different candidate was appointed.

On March 12, 2025, Kwande secured three out of five votes from the kingmakers in a selection process overseen by the Plateau State Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. His swearing-in is scheduled for Friday in Kwande town.

At 95, Kwande’s ascension marks the end of decades of legal and political hurdles, making it a historic moment for the Kwo people.
