Police press conference mangu mob attack

The Plateau State Police Command has arraigned 22 suspects in connection with the June 28, 2025, mob attack on Muslim travelers in Mangu Local Government Area of the state. The attack, which occurred at the Mangu Market Square, left several people injured and claimed multiple lives.

The victims—32 passengers in total—were traveling from Zaria, Kaduna State, to Quan’pan Local Government Area in Plateau State for a wedding when they lost their way and stopped to ask for directions. In the process, they were reportedly ambushed by a violent mob.

Addressing journalists on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at the Command Headquarters in Jos, the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, described the incident as a case of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, mischief by fire, grievous assault, and culpable homicide.

According to him, the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, swiftly responded to the scene, dispersed the mob, and rescued 21 victims who were immediately rushed to a hospital for medical attention. “We commend the Mangu Division for their swift response. Together with the military, NSCDC, and other sister agencies, we were able to contain the situation and rescue lives,” he said.

He disclosed that 22 suspects were apprehended at the scene, and investigations by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) led to the identification of six additional suspects who remain at large. “We are closing in on them. They fled when they got wind of our operations, but we are tracking them and will ensure they are brought to justice,” he assured.

CP Adesina further confirmed that all 22 arrested suspects were arraigned at the High Court of Justice in Jos on Thursday morning. While they are currently back in police custody, they are expected to be transferred to prison custody on Friday, pending the continuation of the trial.

The Commissioner praised the support of responsible members of the Mangun community, particularly some youth leaders who helped rescue victims before the arrival of security agencies. “This act of humanity and bravery is commendable. We urge others to emulate such actions and refrain from taking laws into their hands,” he added.

He also emphasized that the police command remains committed to pursuing justice within the bounds of the constitution, warning that mob justice will not be tolerated. “Let me assure the good and peace-loving people of Plateau State that we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those behind this barbaric act face the full weight of the law.”

The Commissioner concluded by calling on the public, especially youths, to report suspicious activities and assist law enforcement efforts to maintain peace in the state.

Elon Musk’s xAI is running nearly 50 natural gas turbines at its Mississippi data center, power plants that the state is currently not regulating thanks to a loophole.

The power plants are considered “mobile” by the state of Mississippi because they are sitting on flatbed trailers, thus allowing them to dodge to air pollution regulations for one year. The NAACP, which has filed a lawsuit on behalf of residents in the area, says the unchecked emissions from the turbines is worsening air quality in an already polluted region. This week, it asked the court for an injunction against xAI.

At issue is the “mobile” nature of the turbines. The Southern Environmental Law Center, which filed the lawsuit on behalf of the NAACP, says the turbines are being operated in violation of federal law, which says that power plants mounted on a trailer can still be considered stationary and subject to air pollution regulations.

XAI has been granted permits for 15 of its turbines. A Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce press release previously said that “about half” of the 35 turbines in operation in May 2025 would remain on site. However, xAI has continued to install more. Currently, it’s operating 46, according to a local news report.
