Ahead of the Saturday gubernatorial and House of Assembly elections, three political parties, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), the Action Alliance (AA), and the African Democratic Party (ADP) in Plateau State, along with a later gubernatorial candidate, have dissolved their structures into the APC.

Receiving the leadership of the political parties at the state party secretariat in Jos, the state chairman of the APC, Hon. Rufus Bature, said the return was a homecoming as many of them were members of the APC at its formation before their defection to other political parties.

He assured them that they would be accorded the same privileges as those they met on the ground, adding that their returns to the APC would not be taken for granted.

“As far as we are concerned, every single vote is important to us.” Since you have decided to return home, we assure you that we will work together so that Plateau will be better at the end of the day because of the material we have in our candidate. The mandate before every one of us now is to win Saturday’s gubernatorial election.

“I want to say that you might have seen the qualities in our gubernatorial candidate, and this might have spurred you to return home.” “There are other political parties on the plateau; your choice of the APC is because you believe in its ideals,” he said.

Hon. Bature said there are six other political parties that have dissolved into the All Progressive Congress at the state and federal levels and expressed optimism that APC will win the elections come Saturday.

Responding, the governorship candidate of Action Alliance (AA) in the state, Chief Yibalkos Amos Adam, said he jettisoned his ambition to support the candidate of the APC, Professor Nentawe Yiltwada, because of his background and the qualities that placed him ahead of other candidates.

Chief Adam promised that his structure across the 17 local government areas of Plateau State will be deployed to ensure the victory of the APC gubernatorial candidate on Saturday.

Also, the State Chairman of the African Democratic Party (ADP), Rtd. Captain Fire Lamda, said they endorsed Dr. Nentawe because they believe in his ability to bring better development to the state, adding that the National Secretariat of the ADP has been informed to this effect.

Speaking with newsmen, the state chairman of the APC, Hon. Rufus Bature, said the people of Plateau State have made up their minds to retain the APC as a party in government, adding that they are not willing to return to the opposition.

He pointed out that the achievements of the President Buhari-led administration in Plateau State are feasible, adding that the state has never had it so good as under Buhari’s administration, coupled with Governor Lalong’s achievements.

Hon. Bature said Governor Lalong has, in the past eight years, restored the lost glory of the state as the “Home of Peace and Tourism,” adding that there is relative peace in the once-troubled Jos and other parts of the state.

“APC has restored sanity and peace to Plateau; before Lalong came to power, Jos was like a killing field.

“So the coming of Lalong has restored relative peace, and mass burial has been reduced to the barest minimum,” he said.

Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has accused the Accord Party and some members of the National and State Assemblies in the state of spreading false allegations against the opposition party ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

In a statement issued on Friday by the party’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, the APC alleged that recent claims linking the party, its governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, and former governor Adegboyega Oyetola to acts of violence and political misconduct were fabricated.

The party claimed that the allegations were part of efforts by its political opponents to influence public opinion as campaigning intensifies across the state.

According to the statement, the APC rejected reports of alleged attacks on political opponents and claims that vehicles were being branded with Accord Party insignia to create unrest.

“We want to enjoin the members of the public to discountenance these frivolous fabrications against our party, our governorship candidate and the leader of our party,” the statement said.

The APC further alleged that its opponents had repeatedly blamed the party and its leaders for incidents occurring during political activities in the state.

The party maintained that its governorship candidate, popularly known as AMBO, remained focused on his campaign and was pursuing electoral victory through lawful and peaceful means.

“Oyebamiji, who is a man of peace, does not need to engage in violence before he records victory in the election,” the statement added.

The APC also expressed confidence in its chances at the forthcoming governorship poll, arguing that its campaign strategy and political mobilisation had positioned the party strongly ahead of the contest.

While criticising the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke, the opposition party claimed that dissatisfaction among voters would influence the outcome of the election.

The statement further alleged that some of the accusations levelled against the APC were intended to distract attention from challenges facing its political rivals and to generate public sympathy.

Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful political engagement, the APC said it would not resort to violence under any circumstances and urged residents of the state to remain vigilant throughout the electioneering period.

The party stated, “Our party has never and will never tow the path of violence to achieve its objectives under any circumstances.”

DAILY POST had reported that on Friday, lawmakers in the Accord in the state during a press briefing called for the immediate redeployment of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan over alleged partisanship.

The spokesperson of the lawmakers, the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun also accused the APC of orchestrating violence before the crucial august 15 poll.

Democracy Day: Imo PDP accuses Uzodinma of undermining rule of law, separation of power

As Nigeria marks its 27th Democracy Day celebration, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Imo State chapter, has accused the administration of Governor Hope Uzodinma of undermining the rule of law and neglecting democratic principles, including the separation of powers.

The party further accused the administration of eroding public confidence in governance through its style of administration.

In a press statement issued through the office of its spokesperson, Lancelot Obiaku, the party pointed out that the separation of powers and the rule of law are key elements that define true democracy.

The party said that Uzodinma’s leadership has not shown enough commitment to offer Imo people what true democracy looks like, citing incidents of what it described as the arbitrary use of force and power, lack of accountability in the management of public funds, disrespect for the rule of law, and corruption and insecurity being the order of the day over the last six years.

The party emphasised that these situations do not enliven the spirit of the average Imo citizen or inspire hope in democracy amid the Democracy Day commemoration.

“The administration is undermining the roles of the Legislature and the Judiciary, stifling the local government system by keeping it in subjugation, depriving it of resources, and effectively running a government where the Executive operates suo motu without recourse to the other arms of government,” the release stated.

The PDP asserted that the governor’s style of governance negates democratic tenets and has stifled the development of the state.

“We have seen nearly N700 billion in LGA allocations since the inception of the present regime go down the drain, with nothing to show for it—not in the development of rural infrastructure, commerce and industry, education, payment of minimum wage, pensions, and gratuities, among others. Our local government areas do not receive up to 10 percent of their allocations. How then would development get to the grassroots with the greed exhibited by the state government?

“Uzodinma has refused to conduct democratic LGA elections and, having appointed sole administrators in the name of LGA chairmen, has continued to starve the people of the dividends of democracy by depriving them of the government that should ordinarily be closest to them.

“For the first time in the history of the state, Imo went a year without a Chief Judge because the governor wants to run every show without recourse to democratic institutions. When the post became vacant on November 16, 2024, it was incumbent upon the governor to request from the National Judicial Council a recommendation for the appointment of the most senior judicial officer as Chief Judge, in accordance with Section 271(4) of the Nigerian Constitution,” the party added.

Concerning the process of appointing a new Chief Judge, the PDP alleged that instead of the governor writing to the NJC, he went ahead to appoint and swear in Hon. Justice Theophilus Nnamdi Nzeukwu, who it said was not qualified to serve as Acting Chief Judge, an act that prompted the NJC to declare the appointment void.

The PDP stated that the development brought the state into public opprobrium, pointing out that the absence of a Chief Judge for nearly a year meant that cases could not be assigned because only the Chief Judge can do so, in addition to many other functions that only a Chief Judge can perform in a democracy.

“Today in Imo State, contracts awarded by the government are not advertised, and the governor has shut down the Public Procurement Bureau. The process of awarding contracts is kept secret, and not even the State Assembly has a say in them. The costs and other contract details are not made known to the people, who ordinarily are central to governance in a democratic setting.

“We have seen the government recently re-award the World Bank–Umuguma and the Nekede–Iheanwa roads in Owerri for construction. These are roads awarded in 2020 and 2023 by the same administration for tens of billions of naira without anything tangible happening on them. This is the height of theft and sleaze perpetrated by an administration with a morbid inclination toward fraud,” the party further alleged.

The party, while wishing Imo people and Nigerians a happy Democracy Day, urged them to keep faith in democratic governance, assuring them that a bright future lies ahead.
