Organized labour seals House of Assembly in Plateau

The organized labour on Wednesday sealed the gate of the Plateau State House of Assembly as Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) begin the 2023 budget defence.

Workers in the state on Sunday night embarked on a five-day sit-at-home warning strike for non-payment of staff salaries and other welfare issues.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who was at the assembly complex to cover the budget defence, discovered that the main entrance was sealed.

Some labour leaders at the gate told NAN that no worker would be allowed to go in and work.

NAN, however, discovered that the members of the assembly used the back gate to access their offices.

But speaking with the newsmen shortly after the eventual commencement of the exercise, the speaker of the house, Mr Yakubu Sanda, said that the initial hiccups had been resolved.

Sanda said that the “assembly is labour-friendly” and described the incident that heralded the budget defence as unfortunate.

“But of course, we spoke to one another to really understand the need for the budget process to start.

“We all know it has a timeline on which if we don’t conclude, it will affect the system entirely, and everyone, including the civil servants, will suffer the consequences.

“So we try to explain to one another for us to understand the need for them to allow the process to start and that is why the processes are now on,” he said.

The speaker stated that in spite of the delay, the defence was going on smoothly and would be concluded on schedule.

According to him, the members will work every day including weekends to get the budget ready for the governor’s assent before the Dec. 31 deadline.

He said that various committees would scrutinise the budget to provide solutions to the state’s needs.

Nigeria’s female national team, Super Falcons’ head coach, Justine Madugu has blamed his side’s loss to South Africa on individual errors by some of his players, but conceded that he has to take full responsibility for the defeat.

Sports247 reports that Thursday night’s 2-1 slump in Casablanca, Morocco means the Falcons have failed to reach the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time since it’s inception in 1991 and Madugu admitted he deeply regrets the setback.

He, however, commended his players for what he described as their gallant efforts and determination, then repeatedly apologised for the unprecedented yet historic setback at this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2026).

“I have to apologise to Nigerians for our inability to make it to the World Cup,” said the WAFCON 2024 winner in the same North African country. “We are very sorry, because it was not our intention to lose.

“Our players were determined to win, and they gave their all, but individual errors cost us the game. I am sorry and I take full responsibility for what happened, but there will always be a next time.”

Madugu continued to reflect on what went wrong during the play-off fixture, which was a last chance for the Falcons to stay in the race to Brazil 2027, and the embattled tactician admitted that his players lost too many scoring chances during the game.

“There were individual errors in terms of decision making. We had some chances but conversion was our problem. We were determined to win and it’s something that we really regret.

“We wanted to win, but we could; and we are sorry about it. This is something that has happened already, and there’s nothing we can do about it. I am sorry,” Madugu reiterated lamely.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has restored four previously suppressed State House of Assembly constituencies in Delta and Kogi States, following court judgments directing their restoration.

The commission disclosed this in a press statement issued on Friday, August 14, 2026, and signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.
