Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has launched the Victims Support Fund (VSF) 2023/2024 programme, aimed at providing relief and empowerment to victims of terrorist attacks in the state. The materials for this initiative were donated by the Federal Government’s Victims Support Fund, chaired by Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd).
Governor Mutfwang has pledged transparency and accountability in the distribution of relief materials to victims, emphasizing the importance of maintaining trust between the State Government, VSF, and the people of Plateau. During the launch, he announced the formation of a committee, led by the Secretary to the Government of the State, to oversee the distribution process. This committee will include representatives from NGOs, the media, community leaders, and other relevant stakeholders.
The Governor expressed gratitude to Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd) and the VSF management for their intervention in supporting displaced persons in Plateau. He also appealed for strong partnerships with government agencies, philanthropists, and individuals to facilitate the return of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to their ancestral homes.
“We want to be accountable to our donors, to the victims, and to the people of the state. So be rest assured that whatever you have brought to Plateau will be put to good use. We thank you very sincerely for thinking about the victims of the unfortunate violence that has been happening on the Plateau,” Governor Mutfwang affirmed.
He advised the victims not to lose hope but remain resilient and optimistic, assuring them that the government is working tirelessly to overcome the challenges they face.
Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd), Chairman of VSF, represented by Mrs. Toyin Akerele-Ogunsiyi, Special Adviser on Programmes and Operations, outlined the scope of the intervention. The N250 million programme will cover food distribution, education, income generation, psychosocial support, and peacebuilding initiatives in Bassa, Barkin-Ladi, and Riyom Local Government Areas of the state.
The Chairman explained that while VSF was initially established in 2014 to support victims of insecurity in the North-East, the mandate has been extended to include states like Plateau, with a focus on improving livelihoods and rebuilding communities affected by conflicts.
“Our mandate includes distribution of foodstuff, educational materials, training of teachers, income generation, peacebuilding, water and sanitation, among others,” Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd) stated.
The launch event was attended by various dignitaries, including government officials, representatives from NGOs, and community leaders. With the VSF 2023/2024 programme in motion, the people of Plateau are hopeful for a brighter and more secure future.
