Hon. Musa Bagos, former member of the House of Representatives from Plateau State, has been appointed by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to oversee the Local Government Congresses in Nasarawa State.
Bagos, who chaired the congresses, successfully completed the assignment, which was aimed at ensuring a smooth and fair process for the party’s internal elections in the state. The congresses, seen as a crucial step in strengthening the PDP’s structure at the grassroots level, were carried out under his leadership.
Bagos expressed gratitude for the opportunity and thanked God for the successful conclusion of the exercise. His role in overseeing the congresses has been widely acknowledged as part of ongoing efforts to reinforce the party’s presence across Nasarawa’s local government areas.
The NWC commended Bagos for his dedication and professionalism throughout the assignment.
A frontline governorship aspirant in Plateau State under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hon. Jude Dakur, has officially picked the party’s nomination form ahead of the 2027 governorship election, pledging to prioritize grassroots development, security, and economic growth if elected.
Dakur obtained the nomination form on Tuesday, May 13, 2026, signaling his formal entry into the race and expressing confidence in securing the party’s ticket during the forthcoming primaries.
Speaking shortly after obtaining the form, the governorship hopeful said his ambition is driven by a desire to reposition Plateau State for inclusive growth and sustainable development.
He assured supporters that his administration would focus on improving the welfare of citizens and ensuring equitable distribution of resources across the state.
According to Dakur, Plateau State possesses enormous mineral and agricultural potential that must be properly harnessed to drive economic prosperity, particularly in rural communities.
He described mining and agriculture as key pillars of the state’s economy, stressing that strategic investment in the sectors would create jobs and boost internally generated revenue.
On mining activities, Dakur stated that rather than imposing outright restrictions, his administration would create a safe and conducive environment for both artisanal and professional miners to operate effectively.
He added that proper regulation, enforcement of safety standards, and support for miners would help curb illegal mining activities and address related security challenges.
Addressing insecurity in Plateau State, Dakur pledged to adopt a multi-dimensional strategy that would involve stronger collaboration with security agencies, improved intelligence gathering, and support for community-based security initiatives.
He also promised to tackle unemployment and poverty through targeted youth empowerment programmes, noting that engaging young people productively remains vital to achieving lasting peace and development in the state.
BY SUNDAY SAMUEL—The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed reports circulating across various media platforms regarding casualty figures from a recent air-land operation conducted in Zamfara State, describing them as misleading and unverified.
In a statement signed by Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, and shared via the official X account of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the DHQ clarified that the operation was carried out on May 10, 2026, by troops of the Joint Task Force (North West), Operation FANSAN YAMMA, targeting a confirmed gathering of terrorist leaders at Tumfa Village in Shinkafi Local Government Area.
According to the statement, the location was identified through credible, multi-source human intelligence as a coordination point for planned attacks on communities in the North West region. The DHQ explained that the operation involved an air interdiction strike, noting that such missions do not allow for immediate and precise ground-level casualty counts.
It added that figures currently being circulated in the media, including those attributed to both local and international outlets, are speculative and unverified. The official position of the Armed Forces, the statement stressed, remains that several terrorists were neutralised, based on a Battle Damage Assessment conducted after the strike.
The Defence Headquarters also addressed claims of civilian casualties, stating that no credible or substantiated evidence has been established through official assessments or independent verification. It maintained that the identified target was a known terrorist structure occupied by armed non-state actors posing a direct threat to civilian populations.
The DHQ further urged those making such allegations to rely on verified evidence rather than unconfirmed social media reports or hostile sources, warning against narratives that could undermine ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
Reaffirming its operational standards, the Armed Forces of Nigeria stated that all operations are conducted under strict Rules of Engagement and in line with International Humanitarian Law, including the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution. It emphasized that civilians are never targeted and that measures are consistently taken to avoid civilian harm.
The statement added that ground troops are continuing exploitation and clearance operations in the area, while members of the public are advised to rely only on official communications from the Defence Headquarters for verified updates.
The DHQ also assured that any confirmed incidents involving civilian casualties would be duly communicated in line with directives on transparency and professionalism in military operations.
