Senator Simon Bako Lalong, representing Plateau South Senatorial District and former Governor of Plateau State, was over the weekend honoured with a ceremonial golf kitty in celebration of his 62nd birthday. The event, held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at the Lamingo Golf Club in Jos, was organized by the Plateau chapter of the Inside Life Golf Kitty Group.
Dignitaries, golf enthusiasts, and well-wishers gathered to celebrate the senator, describing him as a statesman, a promoter of peace, and a passionate advocate for the development of golf in Plateau State.
Although Senator Lalong’s birthday fell on May 5, he explained that festivities were postponed in respect of the passing of his former deputy governor. “I had no plans to celebrate this year, but Inside Life planned a surprise to honour me. I couldn’t say no,” Lalong said during the celebration, expressing gratitude to the organisers and the golfing community.
The senator described the occasion as one of personal reflection and appreciation, especially in light of recent losses. He praised the unifying nature of golf and recounted memorable experiences from his time as governor and a travelling golfer. One such anecdote was a humorous exchange with former U.S. President Donald Trump, who once proposed a friendly match at the White House after discovering their mutual interest in the sport.
“Golf is a unique game that unites people—even rivals. You can play with someone you disagreed with and later share a drink together,” Lalong said. He urged Plateau residents to embrace peace, stating, “When there’s peace, we can build more golf courses and create a thriving sporting culture that benefits all.”
As part of his remarks, the senator proposed the establishment of a special tournament trophy to honour veteran golfer Dara Sam Gyang, the oldest golfer in attendance, acknowledging his longstanding contributions to the sport.
Major General Oluwaseun Olayinka Oshinowo (rtd), Coordinator of the Inside Life Golf Group, described Senator Lalong as “not just a leader, but a legend of the game in Plateau,” commending his dedication to promoting golf and fostering unity.
Similarly, Sailas Vem, Captain of the Lamingo Golf Club, praised the former governor for his unwavering support and infrastructural contributions. “We are seated under this roof today because of your generosity and commitment to the game,” he said, noting that Lalong remains a life patron and a role model for younger players.
Other dignitaries in attendance included Chief Latep Dabang, Chairman of the Plateau Amateur Golfers Association (PAGA); Engr. Murphy Dogun, patron of the Lamingo Golf Club; and Brigadier General Gakji Shipi (rtd), Vice Chairman of PAGA. They all applauded Senator Lalong’s impact in public service and sports development.
The celebration concluded with the presentation of trophies to outstanding performers during the kitty, as well as special recognitions for notable figures in the Plateau golfing community.
Senator Lalong, a lawyer by profession and advocate of sports diplomacy, served as Governor of Plateau State from 2015 to 2023 and was appointed Minister of Labour and Employment in 2023. He currently represents Plateau South in the Nigerian Senate.
The Plateau State Government has intensified its strategic partnership with China as part of efforts to attract foreign investment, transform agriculture, and accelerate infrastructure development, positioning the state as a competitive destination for business and industrial growth.
Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang disclosed this on Monday while receiving the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, alongside a delegation of Chinese investors and business executives at the Government House in Jos.
The visit is part of the state’s broader strategy to strengthen international partnerships and attract foreign direct investment into critical sectors such as agriculture, mining, healthcare, tourism, infrastructure, and industrial development.
Speaking during the meeting, Governor Mutfwang described the relationship between Plateau State and China as one that has steadily evolved over the years, stressing the importance of expanding cooperation beyond national engagements through direct partnerships with Chinese provinces.
He said his administration is committed to leveraging investment, technology transfer, innovation, and knowledge exchange to unlock the state’s vast economic potential.
Agriculture at the Centre of Partnership
Governor Mutfwang identified agriculture as a key area for collaboration, noting that Plateau State has long been recognized as Nigeria’s food basket and a historic mining hub.
He explained that the government is pursuing an ambitious agricultural modernization agenda focused on mechanization, increased productivity, cold-chain infrastructure, livestock development, and agro-processing.
As part of the initiative, the governor unveiled plans for a 500-hectare Special Agro-Processing Zone near the Yakubu Gowon International Cargo Airport, designed to serve as a major export hub for agricultural products while improving value addition for farmers and agribusinesses.
He also highlighted investment opportunities in poultry, dairy farming, fisheries, and animal feed production, emphasizing the need to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported dairy products by building a competitive local livestock industry.
Sustainable Mining and Industrial Growth
On mining, Governor Mutfwang advocated responsible and environmentally sustainable practices that promote local value addition and community development.
He also called for closer collaboration with Chinese authorities in tackling illegal mining activities and ensuring that mineral resources contribute meaningfully to the state’s economic development.
China Reaffirms Commitment
In his remarks, Ambassador Yu described Plateau State as a strategic investment destination due to its abundant natural resources, favorable climate, and enormous agricultural potential.
He commended Governor Mutfwang’s leadership and ongoing reforms in infrastructure, agriculture, education, and governance, assuring the state of continued support from both the Chinese Government and the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria.
The ambassador disclosed that the visiting delegation comprised executives from four internationally recognized Chinese companies with extensive operational experience in Nigeria, expressing confidence that the engagement would unlock new opportunities in transportation, infrastructure, agriculture, and industrial development.
New Export Opportunities
Ambassador Yu highlighted the growing economic ties between China and Nigeria, revealing that bilateral trade between the two countries is valued at several billions of dollars annually, while Chinese direct investment in Nigeria reached approximately $700 million in the previous year.
He also announced that China’s recently introduced 100 percent zero-tariff policy on Nigerian exports presents a significant opportunity for Plateau State’s agricultural products to gain access to one of the world’s largest consumer markets.
Drawing from China’s development experience, Yu noted that agricultural reforms had lifted more than 800 million people out of poverty, pledging China’s support in improving agricultural productivity, expanding processing capacity, strengthening livestock production, and developing agricultural value chains in Plateau State.
Addressing concerns over illegal mining, the ambassador reiterated China’s zero-tolerance policy against unlawful mining activities and assured the state government of cooperation in identifying and prosecuting offenders while encouraging legitimate investors to comply with established regulations.
Both leaders expressed optimism that the renewed engagement would usher in a new era of mutually beneficial cooperation, delivering increased investment, job creation, economic growth, and sustainable development for Plateau State.
English football giants Manchester United have secured most of the land required to build a new 100,000-seat stadium, a project that will create the largest sporting venue in the United Kingdom.
The proposed stadium, dubbed “New Trafford,” will be located approximately 350 metres from the club’s current home, Old Trafford, where the team has played for the past 115 years.
Club officials confirmed that while a few remaining land parcels are yet to be acquired, no major obstacles are expected to delay the completion of the agreements. The site forms part of the wider Greater Manchester regeneration project and has been identified as the most suitable location for the club’s future home.
A significant hurdle involving land owned by Freightliner was resolved after the club acquired an alternative 25-acre site from industrial property provider Indurent. The land lies between Europa Way, Wharfside Way and John Gilbert Way.
The proposed stadium is expected to take about five years to complete and will accommodate 100,000 spectators, surpassing all existing sports venues in the UK in capacity.
Manchester United plan to continue playing at Old Trafford, which currently seats nearly 74,000 fans, while construction of the new stadium takes place nearby.
The club has also revealed details of the stadium’s innovative design, which will feature a large umbrella-style canopy capable of harvesting solar energy and collecting rainwater. Three towering masts will form part of the structure, making the stadium visible from as far as 40 kilometres away.
According to project documents, the landmark venue could be seen from the outskirts of Liverpool on clear days.
Further details on the master plan for the Old Trafford regeneration project, along with a formal public consultation process, are expected to be unveiled on July 9, 2026. As planning progresses, the club says it will work closely with supporters during the stadium’s design phase.
