Major General AE Abubakar, the Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH) and General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division Nigerian Army, has issued a stern warning to residents of Plateau State against harboring criminals who are causing unrest in the region.

This message was conveyed during his keynote address on October 17, 2023, when he inaugurated additional committee members tasked with implementing the recommendations of a 36-member joint committee report aimed at achieving lasting peace in Barkin Ladi, Bassa, Jos North, Jos South, Mangu and Riyom local government areas of Plateau State.

The ceremony took place at the Headquarters of 3 Division Nigerian Army in Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Rukuba Jos.

The Comd OPSH/GOC, disclosed that the 26-Man peace implementation committee inaugurated in February 2022 has succeeded in bringing peace to the LGAs earlier assigned to it through dialogue and community engagement. He maintained that robust non-kinetic measures have been employed by OPSH to address disagreements without resorting to force except in combating criminality.

He called on the committee members which cut across the different segments of society to be sincere, work with utmost dedication and be transparent in the discharge of their duties.

The GOC further tasked them to “develop and implement a comprehensive action plan that addresses the root causes of conflicts, promotes reconciliation and fosters social cohesion among the affected communities.”

He added, “I urge you to discharge your responsibility with utmost dedication, impartiality and transparency. You have been entrusted with the critical task and the success of your efforts will determine the degree of peace in these seven local government areas. Engage dialogue, mediation and support of community members. They should cooperate with the committee.

“We have developed a non-kinetic approach to tackle the problems. Remember how you used to live together in the past and these hostilities have been on for over 20 years. Collaborate with the State government and other security agencies… We will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that Plateau regains its glory as the home of peace and tourism.

“Sustainable peace can only be attained through collective efforts that involve all stakeholders, the community members themselves, everyone should give peace a chance. I am sending a strong warning to crisis merchants and those that allow their communities to be used as hideouts by criminals that Operation Safe Haven will deal decisively with anyone found harbouring criminals irrespective of position and status in society.”

On his part, the Special Guest of Honor and Secretary to the Plateau State Government, Architect Samuel Jatau, commended the commander OPSH for his high-sense of commitment to peace, which he said was advantageous to the State to regain its rightful place in the comity of Nigerian States. The SSG maintained that Plateau State Government will leave no stone unturned in securing the lives and property of the people.

Speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers and local government chairmen at the event, the Miskhagam Mwaghavul, His Royal Highness Da John Hirse and Chairman Mangu LGA Transition Implementation Committee, Honorable Markus Artu, pledged their commitment to work with relevant authorities to safeguard the communities. They vowed to support the initiative and give maximum support to the committee in order to deliver on its mandate.

In his vote of thanks, the Chairman 55-Man Peace Implementation Committee, Justice Daniel Longji (Rtd), reiterated the commitment of the committee members to dedicate themselves to the tasks ahead. He admitted that through the expansion of the scope of the committee, more successes would be recorded in the State.

Some of the dignitaries who graced the occasion include; the Secretary to Plateau State Government, Architect Samuel Jatau, Special Adviser on Security to Plateau State Governor, Brigadier General GG Shippi (Rtd), Chairman 55-man peace implementation committee, Justice Daniel Longji (Rtd), eminent traditional rulers of Mangu, Riyom, Barkin Ladi and Bokkos as well as Transition Implementation Committee Chairmen of Mangu, Bokkos, Riyom and Barkin Ladi LGAs amongst others.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, in Zamfara State, Surajo Garba Maikatako, has described the party’s reported deregistration as a temporary legal hurdle, urging supporters to remain committed to the ideals of democracy.
Maikatako said this in a statement issued on Sunday in Gusau, where he reassured party members and supporters that the NDC remains a legally recognised and operational political party.

According to him, the party’s leadership had clarified that the NDC had not been deregistered and remained committed to democratic governance and service to Nigerians.

“The recent ruling by the Federal High Court is a decision we view as a temporary legal hurdle, not a death knell,” he said.

The state chairman maintained that the party had complied with all constitutional and legal requirements, adding that its structures remained intact from the polling unit level to the national level.

He also stated that the party’s candidates remained valid and that preparations for the 2027 general elections were ongoing.

Maikatako called on supporters in Zamfara State to remain calm, united and focused, insisting that the development should not discourage members of the party.

He further expressed confidence in the leadership of the party at the national level, describing its governorship candidate in Zamfara State, Senator Kabiru Marafa, as a key figure in the party’s political aspirations.

The chairman urged members to remain steadfast while the party pursues available legal options regarding the court ruling.

Sunday Dare, spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu on media and communications, has defended First Lady Remi Tinubu over her comment encouraging Nigerians, especially women, to start roasted corn, akara, kuli-kuli and other small-scale businesses.

After hosting the wives of the 36 governors in Abuja last week, Mrs Tinubu highlighted the financial interventions provided through her office to vulnerable Nigerians in line with the Mr Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Her comment had generated widespread reactions from Nigerians who accused Mrs Tinubu of being insensitive to the plight of Nigerians.

Mr Dare, in an interview on Mic on Podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye on Saturday, however, said Mrs Tinubu did not miss any point, insisting she was advising Nigerians to get some level of entrepreneurial skills.

“She didn’t miss her point. Her point is that whatever it is, try and do something. Have some level of entrepreneurial skills.

“When you look at the informal sector whose resilience continues to lift this economy; it’s because of these small-scale entrepreneurs that sell akara because we find it predominantly everywhere and also in the north. They are also significant,” Mr Dare stated.

Citing his own experience and that of the business tycoon Aliko Dangote, Mr Dare urged Nigerians to get engaged in any legitmate enterprise, however small, amid the biting hardship in the country.

“Look at me today. Whenever I am today, my mother sold akara and banana. I carried banana on the tray in my head to markets in Jos, Plateau State. My mother sold oranges. And through that, they were able to train me. What’s wrong with that if that was right 60 years ago? Because it’s about the capital you have to grow these businesses by starting small.

“Go and read Dangote’s story. Go and read how he started from? He also started like a small trader. So the point the first lady is making is, whatever it is, be engaged in some kind of enterprise,” he added.

Meanwhile, human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, berated Mrs Tinubu over her comment, asking her to first venture into the business to encourage other Nigerian women.

“Senator Remi Tinubu should first set up Corn, Akara and Kuli Kuli business for some members of her family and the APC women leaders. It will encourage other Nigerians to venture into the same business,” Mr Effiong said in a statement on X on Saturday.
