The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reported receiving 1,161 cases of human rights abuse in Plateau State between January and December 2024.
Mrs. Kiyenpiya Mafuyai, the Acting Coordinator of NHRC in the state, revealed this on Monday in Jos during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
According to Mafuyai, the cases ranged from unlawful detention, extrajudicial killings, inhuman treatment, and domestic violence to child abuse.
Others, she said, included child abandonment, rape, denial of inheritance and forced marriage.
“NHRC received a total of 1,161 cases between January and December 2024, cutting across various areas.
“The data shows that children’s rights are the most violated; children are the most affected group.
“The most recorded cases of child abandonment with a total of 604. We also recorded 189 cases of gender-based violence (GBV).
“131 cases of domestic violence, 17 cases of harmful widowhood practices and 94 cases of civil rights violation, among others, were equally recorded in the period under review,” she said.
Mafuyai accused some state actors, including the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), military and medical personnel, of complicity in civil rights violations.
She, however, said that the prolonged conflict in some parts of Plateau had contributed to the rising rate of violations in the state.
