The Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has appealed for increased support from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assist the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) affected by the incessant attacks in Mangu Local Government Area of the state.
During a visit to the NEMA Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, Governor Mutfwang commended the agency for its prompt response and intervention during previous humanitarian crises in the state. He acknowledged the positive impact of NEMA’s assistance in addressing the fallout from security challenges.
Governor Mutfwang highlighted the unfortunate situation in which the state currently finds itself, with IDPs scattered across 13 different locations. He emphasized that the recent surge in insecurity has disrupted the peace previously enjoyed in Mangu Local Government Area, which was historically regarded as one of the safest places in the region.
He expressed concern over the deliberate destruction of houses and properties by external mercenaries, causing immense hardship for innocent communities. In some instances, insurgents have even targeted farmlands, damaging crops and impacting food security. Governor Mutfwang emphasized the importance of Mangu’s agricultural contributions to food production in Nigeria, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention to address the impending reduction in food production.
Governor Mutfwang called on NEMA to extend its support to the affected communities, providing much-needed assistance during this challenging humanitarian crisis. He reassured the people of Plateau State of the government’s unwavering commitment to addressing the ongoing attacks and ensuring the restoration of peace and security.
Mustapha Habib Ahmed, the Director-General of NEMA, expressed gratitude to Governor Mutfwang for his visit and assured him that the agency would do everything within its power to assist the victims. He acknowledged the governor’s contribution of a well-equipped office space for NEMA’s operations, emphasizing that it would facilitate on-the-spot assessments of the current situation, leading to swift intervention.
The collaborative efforts between the Plateau State government and NEMA signify their shared commitment to alleviating the suffering of IDPs and restoring peace to the affected communities. The governor’s visit underscores the urgency of the situation and the importance of collective efforts to address the challenges faced by the people of Plateau State. With the support of NEMA and other relevant stakeholders, it is hoped that the affected communities will receive the necessary aid and that lasting solutions can be found to end the ongoing attacks and restore normalcy to the region.
