Gov Adeleke, Osun APC renew dispute over security after IGP’s fact-finding visit

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke and the All Progressives Congress, APC, have renewed their exchange over security and policing in the state.

The latest disagreement is coming after the recent fact-finding visit of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to the state ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

In a statement issued on Monday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke, who said residents expected impartial policing before, during and after the election, urged the police to implement measures that would guarantee fairness and public confidence.

The governor commended the Inspector-General’s visit, saying it provided an opportunity for all political parties and community stakeholders to present their positions on the security situation in the state.

According to Adeleke, “the discussions during the visit should guide the immediate implementation of agreed measures aimed at ensuring non-partisan law enforcement across Osun State.

“We appreciate the visit of the Inspector General of Police and that of the Deputy Inspector General a week earlier. The facts are out in the public domain. The IGP has heard and read from both parties.”

Adeleke added that the Commissioner of Police in Osun should remain impartial in the investigation and prosecution of cases of political violence adding that such an approach was necessary to sustain public confidence in the police.

“We seek the arrest of any law breaker irrespective of their political affiliation. Those who commit crimes should be arrested and prosecuted. We harbour no thugs in Government House or anywhere,” he stated.

The governor also called on security agencies to provide a secure environment for voters, adding that killings and attacks were not conducive to the exercise of democratic rights. He pledged his administration’s continued support for security agencies while insisting that the government sought only fair, impartial policing.

Meanwhile, the Osun APC said the Inspector-General’s remarks during his visit supported its earlier allegation that individuals accused of criminal activities were being sheltered within the Osun Government House.

In a statement signed by the party’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, the APC claimed that the Inspector-General had directed the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, to professionally address the allegation.

The opposition party alleged that, “any police action should extend beyond the Government House if investigations required it. Suspected political hoodlums had been shielded from arrest.”

The APC also criticised comments previously made by Osun State Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi, describing his response to the Inspector-General’s remarks as “misplaced” and a mere afterthought.

The party accused the state government of politicising security matters and insisted that law enforcement agencies should thoroughly investigate all allegations relating to political violence in the state.

Flooding: Plateau govt expands waterways, clears drainage systems

The Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) has intensified efforts towards clearing drainage systems and expanding waterways across the Jos-Bukuru metropolis to avert urban flooding.

The Director-General of PEPSA, Samuel Dapiya, said on Monday that the intervention followed recurring flash floods caused largely by blocked drainage channels resulting from indiscriminate waste disposal.

According to him, although heavy rainfalls are seasonal, many flooding incidents in the metropolis were worsened by human activities that obstruct the free flow of rainwater.

Mr Dapiya said the agency had desilted and cleared drainage channels from Miango junction to Educare Private School to improve water flow and minimise flooding.

He added that the agency would continue to monitor the affected areas after subsequent rainfall to determine whether additional engineering or environmental measures would be required.

The PEPSA boss also said personnel and equipment had been deployed to Lugard Road by UTC, where a blocked culvert had forced floodwater onto the road, causing traffic congestion and posing risks to motorists, businesses and other road users.

He attributed the blockage to indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage channels by residents, motorists and business owners.

“Our assessment revealed that plastic bottles, nylon materials, food waste, cartons and other refuse accumulated in the culvert over time, preventing the free flow of water,” he said.

Mr Dapiya said blocked drainage systems often resulted in flooded roads, damaged homes and businesses, destruction of public infrastructure, traffic disruption, environmental pollution and increased public health risks.

He noted that clearing blocked drainage channels required significant public resources that could otherwise be channelled into development projects.

The DG urged residents to dispose of waste only at designated collection points and refrain from dumping refuse into drainage systems, culverts, waterways and open spaces.

He also called on members of the public to report anyone found disposing of refuse in drainage channels or other unauthorised locations to PEPSA or the relevant authorities.

Mr Dapiya reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting lives, property, and the environment through sustained environmental sanitation and flood-prevention measures.

He stressed that effective environmental protection required the collective efforts of government and residents.

“Protecting the environment is a shared responsibility. By disposing of waste properly, residents can help reduce flooding, protect public infrastructure and promote a cleaner and healthier Plateau,” he said.

Speaking exclusively with Sports247, the club boss insisted that his side is well-prepared to compete favourably and challenge for promotion to the NWFL Premiership.

“Chosen Generation Angels FC is really prepared to compete favourably in this group and in the tournament. The young players of last year are developing fast, and that will be evident in the way we play as a team,” he said.

The experienced football administrator revealed that his expectations are high, particularly regarding the team’s playing style and tactical approach.

“My expectations are high in terms of our playing style and tactics that will be adopted for each game. The girls are looking forward to having a good time at the championship, and I believe the opposition will bring out the best in the team.”

According to Agbagu, the club’s recruitment and development structures, coupled with the players’ winning mentality, will be key factors in their pursuit of promotion.

“Our recruitment and development plans are top-notch. The winning mentality of the girls will push them above the line for promotion. Motivation is another aspect that will ensure the players compete well.”

Beyond chasing results on the pitch, Chosen Generation Angels have built a reputation for developing female talents holistically. The club places equal emphasis on football development, education, and vocational training.

“We emphasize all-round development in technical, tactical, physical, and psycho-social aspects of the game. We also understand the importance of empowering the girl-child through quality education and vocational skills that can support them after football.”

The Chairman also called on supporters and stakeholders to continue believing in the team.

“My message is simple: continue praying for our success, continue supporting and watering these dreams, and we shall not disappoint you.”

He further explained that promotion to the NWFL Premiership would be transformational for both the club and the rural community of Wasimi.

“A team from a rural community earning promotion will positively change our story in terms of sponsorships and partnerships. It will uplift the club, the players, coaches, and management, while showing the community the power of sports and how the girl-child can be used to achieve development objectives.”

As the championship kicks off in Calabar, Chosen Generation Angels will be aiming to turn their ambitions into reality and write another remarkable chapter in their inspiring journey from grassroots football to the national stage.
