Remo Stars academy boys Beyond Limits were last weekend crowned champions of the 2023 NPFL and LaLiga U-15 Promises. Beyond Limits defeated Plateau United’s Mees Palace1-0 to make it back-to-back wins in the NPFLU-15 competition at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun state.

LaLiga Ambassador in Nigeria, Mutiu Adepoju said the tournament was a huge success as the youthful teams were worthy ambassadors of their various clubs.

“We had 16 teams that started but it was Remo Stars and Plateau United that got to the final.”

He observed that the standard of the tournament which was sponsored by MTN Nigeria was awesome and the final was top-notch. He said there was not much that differentiated the two teams. “The two teams played good football and the lucky side won”.

The former Super Eagles star insisted, “it could have been anybody’s game. It’s just that the Remo boys used the opportunity they had.”

He couldn’t hold back his joy as a LaLiga Ambassador. “For La Liga, this means a lot. LaLiga is passionate about developing the game from the grassroots. This is one of the ways LaLiga can contribute to Nigeria football and that is what we are doing.

“We saw good players emerge, there is one from Remo Stars who scored 10 goals in this edition. It’s improving, we are having more goals and new stars are emerging.”

Proprietor of Remo Stars Kunle Soname was all smiles after the match which was decided by a lone goal scored by 10-goal hero, Opeyemi Yusuf in the second half of the exciting encounter.

“It means a lot to us at Remo Stars, first it shows that what we are doing is good, at least we are on the right track. We are very proud of our achievements. Emerging the best among the best U15 teams in the country back-to-back is worthy of emulation.”

Soname was not flattered by the stylish manner the two teams performed in the final as he considered the standard of this year’s championship was not higher than last year’s.

“It is the same. To be honest, I think the standard is the same. But I also think that the crop of players sent by clubs were fairly younger than the ones we had last year. And that has been coming down year by year.”

He disclosed that the secret behind Remo Stars’ success was their academy which sees the players graduate from one stage to the next.

“Majority of these players that featured today came in as U13s and some of them who featured last year are eligible because they are still in the age bracket. The team has just been together. They all played in U13 and U15. They have just been together”

The tournament climaxed with an award ceremony in which the major sponsor, MTN Nigeria showered the outstanding players with N100,000 each.

Opeyemi Yusuf won the Golden boot and a plaque as the highest goal scorer with 10 goals. He was generous as he said he would share his cash with his teammates. Abubakar Sadiq from El Kanemi Warriors(most articulate) , Moses Chuwang of Plateau United(best goalkeeper), Sumfat Julius from Plateau United, who scored the goal of the tournament sent everyone in the packed hall chuckling with laughter when he said he would buy a piece of land in Jos with his N100k MTN largess. Umar Bala of Plateau United also won the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

Exeter of England rugby club’s Nigerian-born star, Immanuel Feyi-Waboso has received surgery on a face injury he copped while playing for his team last weekend, as it was deemed too severe to overlook, Sports247 reports.

Although Feyi-Waboso and his club’s officials initially felt he could ride out the setback, confirmation came late Friday that the England international had to go under the knife in midweek and will now likely miss rest of the season.

Exeter will also miss the 23-year-old winger for their crucial final fixture in the English Rugby Premier League’s regular-season against fellow-Nigerian-born star, Maro Itoje’s Saracens this Saturday.

If Itoje’s side win that game, they will go into the end-of-season play-offs at the expense of The Chiefs, who are now without Feyi-Waboso, after he was hurt in the face during Exeter’s win away to Leicester RFC last week.

The injury came after Feyi-Waboso made a crunch tackle on Ollie Hassell-Collins in the 52nd minute of Exeter’s victory over The Tigers, then appeared to hurt his jaw in the process and the right side of his face became swollen at full-time.

Should Exeter fail to make the play-offs final, England are unlikely to risk Feyi-Waboso for a warm-up fixture against France XV on June 18th, but The Lions’ medical staff are confident he will be fit to face world champions, South Africa on July 4th.

Exeter disclosed in a press release: “After extensive monitoring by The Chiefs’ medical team and investigative scans, a decision has been made in partnership with England Rugby for Feyi-Waboso to undergo surgery.”

Sports247 gathered further that it is the second major setback of the year for Feyi-Waboso, who earlier missed the Rugby Six Nations Series after suffering a hamstring injury while training with England in early February.

Feyi-Waboso, who is one of six siblings born to parents with Nigerian, English and Jamaican heritage, also missed the second half of last season because of a shoulder injury, with England and Exeter disagreeing over how his treatment was handled.

The 23-year-old winger was born in Wales and grew up in Llandaff, Cardiff, where he began playing rugby and, after school at Clifton College in Bristol, he initially enrolled at Aston University, then moved to study medicine at Exeter University.

He earlier played with Rumney RFC as well as for Cardiff Schools at U-11 and U-15 levels, then signed for Cardiff Blues’ academy in 2020 then, following Wasps’ expulsion from the league, Feyi-Waboso was signed by Exeter Chiefs in 2022.

Feyi-Waboso first played for the U18 team of Wales, but later switched to play for England at senior level and received his first call-up to The Lions on January 17th, 2024 for the Rugby Six Nations Championship.

Despite the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Nigerian artistes are among the headline acts featured on the star-studded 18-track FIFA World Cup 2026 album released ahead of the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Their inclusion further highlights the growing global dominance of Afrobeats and Nigeria’s cultural influence on the international entertainment scene.

Grammy-winning singer Burna Boy teams up with Colombian superstar Shakira on the lead anthem titled “Dai Dai,” one of the flagship songs expected to dominate the tournament’s celebrations.

Davido also secured a major spot on the project with “No Place Like Home,” a collaboration featuring international music group Major Lazer and Canadian singer Nelly Furtado.

Rema, one of Africa’s fastest-rising global stars, appears on the song “Goals” alongside BLACKPINK member LISA and Brazilian singer Anitta, while Ayra Starr joins American rapper Latto on the track “Show Me.”

Indigenous Nigerian hip-hop star Odumodublvck also earned recognition on the album through a special collaborative song featuring Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho, Justin Quiles, and Lenny Tavárez.

Beyond the official album, Nigerian artists are also expected to play active roles during the tournament festivities.

Reports indicate that Rema will perform during the opening ceremony events, while Davido is scheduled to appear at the FIFA World Cup countdown concert at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

The strong Nigerian representation on the FIFA World Cup soundtrack comes as another major boost for Afrobeats, which has continued to gain worldwide acceptance through collaborations with international stars and appearances on major global platforms.

Although Nigeria’s national football team will miss out on the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, the country’s music industry will still enjoy a prominent spotlight on football’s biggest stage.
