In a historic event on October 10, 2024, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State officially swore in newly elected chairmen from 16 local government areas, following the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) sweeping victory in the local elections. The ceremony, held at Langfield in Jos, marked a new chapter in Plateau’s local governance.

The PDP dominated the October 9 elections, winning chairmanships in key local governments, including Jos North, Jos South, Bassa, Kanam, Barkin Ladi, Langtang South, and others, while results from Langtang North are still pending. The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) announced the results, and the newly elected officials received their certificates of return shortly afterward.

During the swearing-in ceremony, Governor Mutfwang praised the peaceful and transparent election process, celebrating the PLASIEC’s dedication to fairness. Drawing from his own experience as a former local government chairman, he emphasized the importance of local governance and assured that the people’s voice had been respected. “This has been a collective success,” Mutfwang said, commending PLASIEC’s work and the role of Plateau residents in supporting the process.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening local government autonomy, ensuring funds flow directly to councils for improved service delivery. He also encouraged the newly sworn-in chairmen to embrace transparent governance, pledging to support a peer review mechanism to hold local leaders accountable. “Autonomy does not mean independence; it means providing the right working environment to bring governance closer to the people,” Mutfwang explained.

Addressing any opposition to the election results, Mutfwang urged dissatisfied parties to seek redress through legal means rather than resorting to unrest. He expressed gratitude to security personnel and all stakeholders for ensuring a peaceful election.

The ceremony concluded with optimism for a collaborative future, as Governor Mutfwang encouraged all to work together to drive Plateau State forward. The newly sworn-in chairmen now face the task of delivering on their promises, with high expectations for impactful governance in Plateau State.

A frontline governorship aspirant in Plateau State under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hon. Jude Dakur, has officially picked the party’s nomination form ahead of the 2027 governorship election, pledging to prioritize grassroots development, security, and economic growth if elected.

Dakur obtained the nomination form on Tuesday, May 13, 2026, signaling his formal entry into the race and expressing confidence in securing the party’s ticket during the forthcoming primaries.

Speaking shortly after obtaining the form, the governorship hopeful said his ambition is driven by a desire to reposition Plateau State for inclusive growth and sustainable development.

He assured supporters that his administration would focus on improving the welfare of citizens and ensuring equitable distribution of resources across the state.

According to Dakur, Plateau State possesses enormous mineral and agricultural potential that must be properly harnessed to drive economic prosperity, particularly in rural communities.

He described mining and agriculture as key pillars of the state’s economy, stressing that strategic investment in the sectors would create jobs and boost internally generated revenue.

On mining activities, Dakur stated that rather than imposing outright restrictions, his administration would create a safe and conducive environment for both artisanal and professional miners to operate effectively.

He added that proper regulation, enforcement of safety standards, and support for miners would help curb illegal mining activities and address related security challenges.

Addressing insecurity in Plateau State, Dakur pledged to adopt a multi-dimensional strategy that would involve stronger collaboration with security agencies, improved intelligence gathering, and support for community-based security initiatives.

He also promised to tackle unemployment and poverty through targeted youth empowerment programmes, noting that engaging young people productively remains vital to achieving lasting peace and development in the state.

BY SUNDAY SAMUEL—The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed reports circulating across various media platforms regarding casualty figures from a recent air-land operation conducted in Zamfara State, describing them as misleading and unverified.

In a statement signed by Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, and shared via the official X account of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the DHQ clarified that the operation was carried out on May 10, 2026, by troops of the Joint Task Force (North West), Operation FANSAN YAMMA, targeting a confirmed gathering of terrorist leaders at Tumfa Village in Shinkafi Local Government Area.

According to the statement, the location was identified through credible, multi-source human intelligence as a coordination point for planned attacks on communities in the North West region. The DHQ explained that the operation involved an air interdiction strike, noting that such missions do not allow for immediate and precise ground-level casualty counts.

It added that figures currently being circulated in the media, including those attributed to both local and international outlets, are speculative and unverified. The official position of the Armed Forces, the statement stressed, remains that several terrorists were neutralised, based on a Battle Damage Assessment conducted after the strike.

The Defence Headquarters also addressed claims of civilian casualties, stating that no credible or substantiated evidence has been established through official assessments or independent verification. It maintained that the identified target was a known terrorist structure occupied by armed non-state actors posing a direct threat to civilian populations.

The DHQ further urged those making such allegations to rely on verified evidence rather than unconfirmed social media reports or hostile sources, warning against narratives that could undermine ongoing counter-terrorism operations.

Reaffirming its operational standards, the Armed Forces of Nigeria stated that all operations are conducted under strict Rules of Engagement and in line with International Humanitarian Law, including the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution. It emphasized that civilians are never targeted and that measures are consistently taken to avoid civilian harm.

The statement added that ground troops are continuing exploitation and clearance operations in the area, while members of the public are advised to rely only on official communications from the Defence Headquarters for verified updates.

The DHQ also assured that any confirmed incidents involving civilian casualties would be duly communicated in line with directives on transparency and professionalism in military operations.
