Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has flagged off the construction of a 400-unit housing estate in Zanwra, Bassa Local Government Area, describing the project as a milestone in his administration’s drive to ease the accommodation deficit faced by civil servants.
The estate forms part of a broader 2,000-unit housing scheme across the state. Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, the Governor said the initiative goes beyond building houses.
“Today, we are not merely laying foundation stones; we are laying the foundation of hope, dignity, and stability for our hardworking and dedicated workforce,” Mutfwang said.
The Governor noted that the project was conceived as a deliberate welfare strategy, adding that civil servants remain “the true and reliable pillars of good governance.” He highlighted reforms including the clearance of salary arrears, payment of decades-old pensions and gratuities, a pension increase of up to 100%, and the approval of a ₦70,000 minimum wage for state workers.
Disclosing that 38.299 hectares of land were acquired at a cost of ₦346.5 million, fully paid for by the government, Mutfwang stressed: “Housing is not a privilege, it is a right. With this project, we are not just building houses; we are creating homes, communities, and enduring legacies.”
Plateau NLC Chairman, Comrade Eugene Manji, hailed the government for reviving the workers’ housing scheme, assuring that developers were ready to deliver visible progress within two months. Head of Service, Mr. Stephen Pam Godong, promised a transparent allocation process based on years of service, income brackets, and contributions to the National Housing Fund.
Representing the developers, Engr. Christopher Nathaniel of DSK Group of Companies pledged that each unit would meet modern standards, including solar power, boreholes, schools, clinics, and recreational spaces. He said the project would create over 3,000 jobs and boost the local construction sector.
In goodwill messages, TUC Chairman Kenneth Shamma urged the government to open alternative routes to the estate, while HRH Ronku Aka, the Bra Ngwe Irigwe, praised Mutfwang’s development efforts and called for improved security in the area.
The event ended with Governor Mutfwang laying the foundation stone, marking a significant step in addressing Plateau State’s accommodation challenges for civil servants.
