The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has received a significant boost ahead of the 2027 general elections following its adoption as the official political platform by a broad coalition of influential national leaders across party lines.
Reacting to the development, Hon. Solomon Nandy Chendan, the ADC’s 2023 gubernatorial candidate in Plateau State and current party leader in the state, described the endorsement as a “welcome development and a turning point in Nigeria’s political landscape.”
Chendan called on democrats across Plateau and the country at large to align with what he termed the “Arise and Shine” movement—a national awakening he said offers a credible alternative to Nigeria’s long-standing governance challenges.
“This is a defining moment. The ADC is poised to lead a national rebirth, starting with a rescue mission in Plateau State under the leadership of our dynamic chairperson, Ambassador Hannatu Gagara,” Chendan stated.
He expressed optimism that the coalition’s adoption has repositioned the ADC as a formidable opposition party capable of contesting power and driving meaningful transformation.
“We wholeheartedly welcome this development. We expect more people to join our fold as we build the Nigeria we all desire,” he added.
Chendan emphasized the ADC’s commitment to developmental politics, inclusive governance, and lasting peace, urging citizens to rally behind the party in the lead-up to 2027.
“Our party is open to all Nigerians ready to build a nation that works. ‘Arise and Shine’ is more than a slogan—it’s a call to action rooted in the collective aspirations of our people,” he said.
The coalition that adopted the ADC comprises several high-profile figures across Nigeria’s political spectrum. Former Senate President David Mark was announced as interim chairman, with former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as secretary and former Minister of Youth and Sports Bolaji Abdullahi as publicity secretary.
Other prominent members include Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate; his running mate Datti Baba-Ahmed; former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; ex-Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi; former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai; and former Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami.
The ADC’s adoption by such a diverse coalition is widely seen as a political realignment with the potential to reshape Nigeria’s electoral landscape. Political analysts are watching closely to see how the party leverages its newfound momentum in the countdown to 2027.
