Candidates from all political parties running for governorship positions in Plateau State come 2023 have been urged to promise that whoever emerges winner in the election will foster an environment that allows for the State to attract investment from development partners.

This request was made as part of an agenda-setting programme organized by the Plateau Peace Practitioners Network, PPPN, a coalition of non-governmental organizations working for the restoration of peace in the State.

The Plateau Peace Practitioners Network, PPPN, a confederation of non-governmental organisations working for the restoration of peace in the State, has organised this as a component of an agenda-setting programme.

Speaking at the occasion in Jos, the Chairman of the PPPN, Mr Pwakim Choji, argued in favour of the Open Government Partnership and urged the person who would succeed Governor Simon Lalong to look into it and actively participate in it, despite the fact that Plateau State had signed on.

He explained that Open Government Partnership is a framework that will enable a sitting Governor to walk out of office free without any court cases because it creates transparency and whoever is coming on board to leverage it.

Addressing the gubernatorial candidates of political parties as well as other participants, Choji noted, “Over the years, the people had less to say pre-election and post-elections. At this point, we would like to have an agenda setting where we listen to the politicians who want to govern the State in the next four years and we also tell them what our areas of interest are as well.”

He commended the establishment of the Plateau Peace Building Agency to encourage peaceful coexistence in local communities by the State government but added that the Agency needs to be funded and empowered to serve as a credible coordination platform where other local NGOs can collaborate to serve the purpose of ensuring lasting peace.

Some gubernatorial candidates present which included that of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, that of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Nentawe Yilwatda, that of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Samuel Abashe, and others presented their intentions for the people and promised to work with credible stakeholders to ensure a peaceful State.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Osun State Council, has condemned the rising wave of political violence ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.

The union also warned that the trend poses a serious threat to peace, public safety and the democratic process.

The Council expressed concern over increasing reports of killings, intimidation and destruction of property linked to political activities, saying the situation could undermine the credibility of the election if urgent steps were not taken to curb the violence.

In a statement jointly signed by the Osun NUJ Chairman, Adeyemi Aboderin, and the Secretary, Olalekan Akindoju, the union cited a report by the Kimpact Development Initiative, KDI, which recorded 44 election-related violent incidents across the state between October 2025 and June 2026.

According to the statement, the incidents reportedly resulted in the deaths of 13 people, a development the Council described as alarming and requiring immediate intervention by all stakeholders.

“The figures should serve as a wake-up call to all stakeholders. No political ambition is worth the loss of human lives,” the statement said.

The Council called on security agencies to intensify efforts to prevent further violence by protecting lives and property, maintaining professionalism and impartiality, and ensuring that those responsible for violent acts were brought to justice regardless of their political affiliations.

It also urged political parties, governorship candidates and their supporters to conduct peaceful campaigns centred on issues affecting the people, rather than engaging in actions capable of fuelling unrest.

“The NUJ cautions political leaders against making inflammatory statements that could incite violence. They have a responsibility to restrain their supporters and place the interests of Osun State above partisan considerations.

“The Council appeals to residents, particularly young people, not to allow themselves to be used as agents of political violence or intimidation during the electioneering period,” the statement added.

It emphasised that the lives and future of the state’s youth should not be sacrificed for political interests, urging them to reject any attempt to lure them into unlawful activities.

The NUJ reaffirmed the commitment of journalists in Osun State to promoting responsible journalism, factual reporting and public enlightenment throughout the governorship election campaign.

It also called on media practitioners to uphold the ethics of the profession by avoiding sensational reports capable of escalating political tension, while encouraging balanced and accurate coverage of political activities across the state.

Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, on Thursday paid a courtesy visit to the Vice-Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his residence in Kano State.

Obasanjo was received by Kwankwaso alongside the NDC governorship candidate in Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo.

The visit was confirmed in a statement issued by Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, who described the meeting as an occasion for cordial interactions and warm exchanges between the political leaders.

However, details of the discussions held during the closed-door meeting were not disclosed.

Kwankwaso, who served as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence during Obasanjo’s second term in office between 2003 and 2007, has maintained a longstanding political relationship with the former president.

The meeting has further fuelled speculations about possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly in light of reports suggesting efforts to strengthen opposition collaboration.

NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is widely regarded as a close ally of Obasanjo, who publicly supported him during the 2023 presidential election.
