Candidates from all political parties running for governorship positions in Plateau State come 2023 have been urged to promise that whoever emerges winner in the election will foster an environment that allows for the State to attract investment from development partners.

This request was made as part of an agenda-setting programme organized by the Plateau Peace Practitioners Network, PPPN, a coalition of non-governmental organizations working for the restoration of peace in the State.

The Plateau Peace Practitioners Network, PPPN, a confederation of non-governmental organisations working for the restoration of peace in the State, has organised this as a component of an agenda-setting programme.

Speaking at the occasion in Jos, the Chairman of the PPPN, Mr Pwakim Choji, argued in favour of the Open Government Partnership and urged the person who would succeed Governor Simon Lalong to look into it and actively participate in it, despite the fact that Plateau State had signed on.

He explained that Open Government Partnership is a framework that will enable a sitting Governor to walk out of office free without any court cases because it creates transparency and whoever is coming on board to leverage it.

Addressing the gubernatorial candidates of political parties as well as other participants, Choji noted, “Over the years, the people had less to say pre-election and post-elections. At this point, we would like to have an agenda setting where we listen to the politicians who want to govern the State in the next four years and we also tell them what our areas of interest are as well.”

He commended the establishment of the Plateau Peace Building Agency to encourage peaceful coexistence in local communities by the State government but added that the Agency needs to be funded and empowered to serve as a credible coordination platform where other local NGOs can collaborate to serve the purpose of ensuring lasting peace.

Some gubernatorial candidates present which included that of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, that of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Nentawe Yilwatda, that of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Samuel Abashe, and others presented their intentions for the people and promised to work with credible stakeholders to ensure a peaceful State.

The Labour Party, LP, has reacted to its inclusion in the list of candidates for the Enugu North senatorial by-election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

INEC has rectified the previous omission of the party and its candidate from the list of participants in the upcoming Enugu North Senatorial District by-election, which is set for June 20, 2026.

The party, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluna Asogwa, said it was important to note that when the Commission first released the list of political parties and candidates authorized to take part in the by-elections nationwide, the Labour Party and its candidate were notably missing.

The omission happened despite the party having fully adhered to all constitutional and statutory obligations.

However, the party said that after discussions with the Commission’s leadership, the oversight has now been corrected, and the Labour Party along with its candidate have been duly included in the election.

“Consequently, the Party is entirely prepared to engage in the by-election and provide the residents of Enugu North with credible and people-focused representation for the remainder of the 10th Senate,” the statement said.

“By ensuring that the appropriate actions were taken, the Commission has shown its responsiveness and strengthened public trust in the electoral process.”

The party also expressed gratitude to its supporters, members, and well-wishers who expressed concern and inquired about the Party’s status in the upcoming election. Your vigilance, dedication, and steadfast belief in the Party are truly invaluable.

“As the campaigns move into their final stages, the Labour Party wishes success to its candidates in Enugu North, Nasarawa North, Rivers South-East, and all its candidates participating in the various by-elections across the nation,” it stated.

“We remain hopeful that the outcomes will not only be favourable to our Party but will also deepen Nigeria’s democratic culture and strengthen the people’s faith in the electoral process.”

The Umuekumenyi Leaders’ Council comprising two zones in Ebonyi State have disowned their son and Governor of Ebonyi state, Francis Nwifuru, instead backing the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate, Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, in the 2027 governorship election.

The zones include Ohaukwu,Ishielu,Ebonyi Abakaliki, lzzi, Ikwo, Ezza South and Ezza North local government areas.

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a stakeholders’ meeting held in Abakaliki on Saturday and signed by the council’s spokesperson,  Barrister Emmanuel Nwibo.

The council, which said it comprises community leaders, professionals, youth representatives, women leaders, stakeholders and citizens from the Umuekumenyi area, said the meeting was convened to review the socio-economic and political situation in Ebonyi State and chart a path forward.

According to the communiqué, members expressed concern over what they described as declining governance standards, economic hardship, youth unemployment and a perceived slowdown in developmental activities across the state.

The council argued that the future leadership of Ebonyi State should be determined by competence, capacity, vision, accountability and proven performance rather than considerations of zoning, political sentiment or geographical affiliation.

“The development and progress of Ebonyi State can no longer be subjected to trial-and-error leadership. The overriding criteria for leadership selection must be based on competence, integrity, vision and commitment to good governance,” the communiqué stated.

The council also called on the state government to address economic challenges confronting residents, including the rising cost of living, unemployment and declining business opportunities.

Members further urged greater transparency, accountability and public engagement in governance, noting what they described as a growing disconnect between government and the people.

The communiqué lamented what the council termed the abandonment of the developmental vision of Ebonyi State’s founding fathers and called on political leaders and stakeholders to recommit themselves to unity, development, fairness and inclusive governance.

On the 2027 governorship election, the council welcomed the emergence of aspirants from different parts of the state, describing the development as a positive sign for democracy.

It stressed that all aspirants should be thoroughly scrutinised to ensure that whoever emerges possesses the capacity to reposition the state and restore its developmental trajectory.

The council, however, singled out Chief Dr. Ifeanyichukwu Odii for special commendation, describing him as “the most credible alternative” for the state’s leadership at this critical period.

According to the council, Odii’s background in the private sector and his perceived leadership qualities place him in a strong position to drive economic growth and development in the state.

“After careful consideration, the council views Chief Dr. Ifeanyichukwu Odii as the most credible alternative at this moment in our history and hereby adopts him as its preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Ebonyi State,” the communiqué stated.

The council encouraged Odii not to be discouraged by political opposition or criticism, urging him to remain focused on his political ambition.

In another resolution, the stakeholders announced the formal recognition of the Umuekumenyi Leaders’ Council as a socio-cultural platform dedicated to promoting the welfare, development, unity and cultural heritage of the Umuekumenyi people.

The body said it would serve as a platform for advocacy, community development, peacebuilding, leadership engagement and the promotion of good governance.

The council also called on sons and daughters of Umuekumenyi at home and in the diaspora to unite in pursuit of development, peace, economic advancement and responsible leadership.
