Gubernatorial Aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau State, Ambassador Bagudu Hirse has said that he is a man with a heart for Plateau State.
Ambassador Bagudu Hirse, also a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, made this known when he engaged PDP Delegates in Bassa, Jos South, Barkin Ladi and Riyom LGAs to seek their support in the forthcoming Gubernatorial Primary Election slated for 23rd May 2022.
He stated that he was moved to step up and contest for Governorship because he was unhappy with the way Plateau State has deteriorated and the way Plateau Citizens are suffering due to insecurity, bad leadership and economic hardship.
He dispelled any opinion going around that he is old and tired, insisting that he was here to follow in the steps of former Governor, Da Jonah Jang, especially his strides in infrastructural development and as one who will govern with the fear of God if given the mandate.
Ambassador Bagudu urged delegates to deliver the PDP with a credible candidate as the burden is now their responsibility. He stated that reliable information has confirmed that the PDP in Plateau state has been infiltrated by some persons who do not mean well for the party even some amongst them are aspirants, as such he enjoined delegates to get it right by bringing worthy candidates that have the interest of the party.
According to him, Plateau State is blessed as the home of tourism which has remained largely untapped, an example is the wildlife park that is wasting away. He said if properly handled it will generate revenue for the state and guarantee the prosperity and growth of tourism in the state.
“I am here to introduce myself to you and to dispel any notion that I am old, I want you to know that I have the qualities needed to change the story of the people of Plateau State for good.”
“I have a well-detailed agenda for Plateau state, which includes my plans for economic development, Agricultural development, youth empowerment, peace and security. It is not about who you take over from but what you can do for the people and it is time for the PDP to take back power. Leadership has nothing to do with age, it lies in someone’s capacity and ideas” he said.
Director-General of the Campaign Organization, a former Northern Zone Party Vice Chairman, Chief Andrew Iza, while introducing the Aspirant described him as a good product with no hiding place with his antecedents well known in Plateau state and beyond.
He urged the Delegates to give him a chance to achieve his vision of a better, greater, safer and more prosperous Plateau.
While responding, the delegates and various leaders of the delegates who spoke, described him as a person who understands PDP and Plateau State as he has been there over the years.
They appreciated his presence and lauded his capacity as an Aspirant with a difference, and prayed to God to grant him his desire.
They urged him not to disappoint the state if given the mandate but to work towards the growth of the State.
The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has warned against the use of state institutions to manipulate the 2027 general elections, insisting that the credibility of the polls must be “non-negotiable”.
Mark also cautioned against intimidation, violence and other forms of electoral malpractice, saying the ADC expected the next general elections to be transparent, inclusive, peaceful and free from interference.
The former Senate President spoke on Wednesday in Abuja when he received a delegation from the International Republican Institute (IRI), which is in Nigeria as part of its assessment of preparations for the 2027 elections.
According to Mark, the integrity of the electoral process would be critical to determining whether Nigerians would have confidence in the outcome of the 2027 polls.
“For us in the ADC, the credibility of the 2027 elections must be non-negotiable. We expect the electoral process to be transparent, inclusive, peaceful and free from manipulation, intimidation and the abuse of state institutions,” Mark said.
He expressed concern over what he described as the recurring abuse of the electoral process by governments in power as well as non-state actors, warning that such practices could undermine democratic governance and erode public confidence in elections.
Mark made particular reference to the violence and intimidation reported during the recently concluded Osun State governorship election, which he said should serve as a warning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He said reports indicated that no fewer than 30 people were killed during the election, describing the development as reprehensible and condemnable.
“Elections should not be treated as war or a do-or-die affair. There should be a democratic process through which citizens freely choose their leaders and advance their aspirations for development and a better quality of life,” he said.
The ADC chairman said his party was committed to an electoral process conducted in a secure environment where voters could freely cast their ballots without fear or intimidation.
He added that every vote must count and that mandates freely given by the electorate must be respected.
His comments come as political parties and other stakeholders intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with concerns over electoral violence, the neutrality of state institutions and the credibility of the electoral process already featuring prominently in discussions ahead of the polls.
Earlier, the IRI delegation said its visit was aimed at assessing the country’s level of preparedness and engaging key stakeholders on issues that could affect the conduct of the elections.
The African Regional Director of IRI, Jenai Cox, said the organisation was conducting a pre-election assessment mission to evaluate preparations for the 2027 polls.
Demola Olarewaju, the Senior Political Assistant to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has described the party’s running mate, Rotimi Amaechi, as a statesman who knows when to fight hard.
Olarewaju said Amaechi knows when to put aside his personal interests for the larger agenda of removing President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Posting on X, he wrote: “Rotimi Amaechi is a statesman who knows when to fight hard and when to sheathe swords; when to be selfish and when to subsume personal interest for a larger agenda of kicking Tinubu out.
“Some people are only useful to themselves, and therefore useless to society and a coalition.”
The ADC had picked Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate after he lost at the party’s primary election.
Following his loss, Amaechi had contested the process, claiming that it was flawed.
But Atiku reached out to Amaechi and another aspirant, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, urging them to support him in his bid to become Nigeria’s President and salvage the nation.
