Senate President Akpabio Urges Plateau Government to Enforce Town Planning Laws Following School Building Collapse

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on the Plateau State Government to strengthen the enforcement of town planning regulations following the recent tragic collapse of a school building, which resulted in the loss of several students’ lives.

Akpabio made these remarks during a courtesy visit by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and a delegation of traditional rulers to his office on Tuesday. The Senate President expressed his condolences and emphasized the need for strict adherence to building regulations to prevent future tragedies.

“We extend our condolences on the building collapse. It was a horrific sight, and the building was not even constructed during your tenure. This highlights the importance of reinforcing town planning laws and taking a keen interest in the building industry,” Akpabio stated. “No sentiments should interfere. Regardless of who is affected, any building that does not comply with regulations, especially those erected on water passageways, should be demolished.”

Akpabio also noted the historical reluctance to address buildings constructed by influential individuals, stressing the necessity for change. “In the past, buildings by the high and mighty were left untouched out of respect. We must change this mentality to safeguard lives,” he said. “On behalf of the 10th Senate, please accept our condolences. This tragedy saddens the entire country.”

Governor Mutfwang, during his remarks, mentioned that his visit to the National Assembly was also to attend a public hearing on the Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences (Repeal and Enactment) Bill, 2024. The bill aims to upgrade the institute to a full-fledged university, with Plateau State as the proposed location.

The tragic collapse of Saint Academy in Jos, the Plateau State capital, occurred on Friday, July 12, around 8:30 am while students and teachers were in their classrooms. State Commissioner for Information Musa Ashoms reported that the death toll had risen to 22, with 154 individuals injured. A thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse is underway.
