The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro, has convened a Northern Zone Expanded Stakeholders Meeting in Plateau State to strengthen unity, encourage political participation and promote peace and development across the area.

The meeting, which drew political party leaders, elder statesmen, stakeholders and political office holders from across the Northern Zone of Plateau State, was held on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at Jonggrand Hotel, Bukuru.

Speaking at the engagement, Dr. Doro said the meeting was organised to interface with his constituency in the Plateau North Senatorial District, particularly in light of the ongoing All Progressives Congress (APC) electronic registration exercise.

“I am here to assess the situation, encourage participation and ensure that my constituency and Plateau State at large are adequately captured in the registration process. I am also here to interface with the people and encourage unity,” he said.

The minister explained that the forum also provided an opportunity to receive and encourage individuals who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, stressing the need for cohesion and cooperation among party members.

“Together we must work for the success of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 and for the success of our Governor, Barrister Caleb Mutfwang,” Dr. Doro added.

He noted that the meeting forms part of early preparations to position the APC ahead of future elections, describing it as a mobilisation platform aimed at ensuring party members are adequately prepared to engage at the federal, state and local government levels.

Beyond politics, the minister expressed concern over recurring security challenges in Plateau North and their humanitarian consequences. He said his ministry is prioritising what he described as the humanitarian–development–peace nexus, which seeks to address crises through sustained peacebuilding and peaceful coexistence.

“When we have peace, there will be less need for humanitarian intervention, and when there is less humanitarian intervention, we will have development and human capital growth,” he said.

Dr. Doro also disclosed that his ministry is set to hold its inaugural Council on Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in Cross River State from Tuesday, January 27, where representatives from all states will converge to harmonise policies and develop a unified national approach to poverty reduction.

He expressed optimism that continued stakeholder engagement, coordinated peacebuilding efforts and harmonised policies would significantly enhance stability and socio-economic development in Plateau State and across the country.

Former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido has criticised former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Isa Ali Pantami over his past description of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as an “infidel party”, while reaffirming his long-standing loyalty to the opposition party.

Lamido made the remarks while receiving PDP governorship candidates from Gombe, Bauchi, Kano, Yobe and Jigawa states at his residence in Bamaina, Jigawa State, on Saturday.

Reflecting on the PDP’s years in power, Lamido said the party was repeatedly criticised by political opponents and some Islamic preachers.

“The PDP was labelled corrupt, and some even described it as an ‘infidel party.’ Despite all that, I remained in the party because it gave me the opportunity to serve Nigeria as Minister of Foreign Affairs and twice as Governor of Jigawa State,” he said.

The former governor disclosed that after the 2015 general elections, senior figures in the All Progressives Congress (APC), including former President Muhammadu Buhari, President Bola Tinubu and former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, visited him in Dutse to persuade him to join the ruling party.

“I told them I could not abandon the party that made me who I am. Instead, I challenged them to come and join the PDP,” Lamido stated.

He also recalled that Pantami, while serving as Chief Imam of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Jumu’ah Mosque, allegedly delivered sermons in which he prayed against the PDP and referred to it as an “infidel party.”

According to Lamido, Pantami later joined the PDP after failing to secure the APC governorship ticket in Gombe State, a move that generated widespread public debate.

Pantami has not publicly responded to Lamido’s latest comments.

The exchange comes as political realignments and defections gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.

‘I’ll not withdraw from Taraba North Senate race’ – Bandawaire

The All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate for Taraba North, Kabiru Bello Bandawaire, has dismissed reports claiming he has been replaced as the party’s candidate, insisting that he remains the duly nominated flag bearer and will not withdraw from the race.

Speaking on Saturday in Jalingo, Taraba State, Bandawaire said he had no intention of stepping aside for any individual, maintaining that he was validly elected and recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He described media reports alleging that the APC had substituted his name with that of the incumbent senator, Shuibu Isa Lau, as false and misleading.

“I will not withdraw from the senatorial race to represent Taraba North Senatorial District. I am the candidate and will not step aside for any individual.

“I cannot sell out the mandate given to me by the people. I am not aware of any replacement, and the party has not communicated such a decision to me,” Bandawaire said.

The APC candidate argued that the Electoral Act provides a clear process for the substitution of candidates, stressing that a duly nominated candidate can only be replaced after voluntarily withdrawing from the contest.

According to him, he has neither indicated any intention to withdraw nor submit any letter to the party expressing such a decision.

“I do not look like someone who will withdraw from the race, and that mandate remains mine. The party must respect due process,” he said.

Bandawaire further described the alleged substitution as undemocratic, insisting that any replacement must comply with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

“I wish to inform the people of Taraba that my name has not been replaced by anyone. I remain the senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress for Taraba North,” he stated.
