Customers’ vending deductions designed for debt repayments: JED
The Jos Electricity Distribution Plc (JED Plc) says that deductions currently being experienced by customers during vending were for debt recovery.
JED’s Head of Corporate Communications, Saratu Dauda, made the clarification during an interview on Thursday in Jos.
Ms Dauda stated that the deductions were a structured debt repayment scheme designed to recover outstanding balances.
The communication head said that a significant number of the company’s metered customers across its franchise areas were recently enrolled in the scheme as part of efforts to improve billing transparency and ensure sustainable electricity supply.
According to her, the scheme covered customers with previously accumulated unpaid bills, as well as those yet to pay for preloaded energy units issued with prepaid meters, usually ranging from 20 to 100 units depending on meter type.
She further said that the outstanding debts had been integrated into affected customers’ accounts, with repayments structured through deductions at the point of vending.
Ms Dauda added that a flexible repayment plan had been introduced, with monthly deductions starting from ₦2,000, depending on the total debt owed.
“The deductions observed during vending transactions represent repayment contributions toward outstanding balances, while the remaining value is credited as electricity units.
“The company put in place several support mechanisms to ensure transparency and customer satisfaction, such as dedicated customer care channels across all its franchise areas to assist with enquiries, complaints, and account reconciliation.
“JED remains committed to a transparent, fair, and customer-centric process and will continue to engage openly with its customers to address concerns and build trust,” she added.
Most JED consumers in the Jos-Bukuru metropolis have expressed concern over the issuance of ‘indebtedness’ messages when vending for electricity.
Several customers said that upon purchasing electricity worth ₦5,000, an amount of ₦2,000 is deducted, with only ₦3,000 worth of units credited to their meters, alongside a notification indicating outstanding debt claims they strongly dispute.
This situation has led to widespread complaints, with many consumers accusing the company of unfair practices and exploitation.

Shooting Stars led 2-0 courtesy of goals from Taofeek Otaniyi and Desmond Ojietefian.
The home team, however, rallied to earn a share of the spoils, with Donald Obiajulu bagging a brace.
Four-time champions Kano Pillars bounced back from last weekend's disappointing defeat to Plateau United, earning a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Warri Wolves in Ozoro.

NPFL Matchday 10: Tornadoes Stun Abia Warriors, Nasarawa Sink Enyimba as Ikorodu City, Katsina United Stage Comebacks
Niger Tornadoes claimed a crucial away victory over Abia Warriors, Nasarawa United continued their impressive run, while Ikorodu City and Katsina United produced dramatic comebacks in an entertaining Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 10 weekend.
Sports247 reports that the round, which began on Saturday, October 24, continued on Sunday with eight fixtures producing narrow victories, late equalisers and further frustration for struggling Inter Lagos.
Wasiu Jimoh’s 56th-minute strike earned Niger Tornadoes a valuable 1-0 away victory over Abia Warriors, delivering one of the weekend’s standout results. Nasarawa United maintained their winning momentum with another 1-0 triumph, this time against Enyimba.
Jofrank Istifanus scored the decisive goal in the 23rd minute, building on the Lafia Boys’ impressive 2-0 away victory over Inter Lagos on Matchday 9.
Meanwhile, Bendel Insurance defeated Rivers United 2-1, with W. Freeman opening the scoring in the 60th minute before J. Jonathan struck in the 90th minute.
Katsina United staged a remarkable recovery to draw 2-2 against Plateau United in Saturday’s opening fixture. Victor Dawa gave Plateau United a 30th-minute lead before Jibril Ibrahim doubled their advantage in the 82nd minute.
However, Yusha’u Armiya’u responded in the 84th minute, while Umar Rabiu’s stoppage-time equaliser rescued a point for the hosts.
At the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Ikorodu City also recovered from two goals down to secure a 2-2 Southwest derby draw against Shooting Stars.
Taofeek Otaniyi struck in the third minute before Desmond Ojietefian doubled Shooting Stars’ lead in the 36th minute.
Donald Obiajulu inspired Ikorodu City’s comeback with goals in the 44th and 83rd minutes. Inter Lagos’ difficult campaign continued with a 1-0 defeat to Kun Khalifat with Benjamin 69th minute goal , extending their disappointing run despite changes to their coaching setup.
Elsewhere, Barau FC and Kwara United settled for a 1-1 draw. Anthony Sunday scored in the 40th minute before Goodluck Ogbolu equalised in the 63rd minute.
Warri Wolves and Kano Pillars played out a goalless draw, leaving both sides with a point. Two fixtures remain outstanding, with Ranchers Bees scheduled to host Doma United on 18th November, 2026 and Rangers International set to visit Sporting Lagos at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on the 25th November, 2026.
