Vice President Kashim Shettima on Friday paid an on-the-spot assessment visit to the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, following the recent attack on the institution by gunmen.

The Vice President, accompanied by the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, and other senior government officials, was received by the Director-General of NIPSS, Ayo Omotayo, alongside members of the institute’s management team.

The visit was aimed at evaluating the impact of the attack on the institution, assessing the state of its facilities and operations, and reviewing ongoing strategic programmes at the nation’s foremost policy and leadership training institute.

During the visit, Shettima inspected key facilities within the institute and received briefings from the management on security concerns, operational challenges, and measures being taken to strengthen the safety of staff, participants, and infrastructure.

The Vice President reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to the security and protection of strategic national institutions, stressing the importance of NIPSS in shaping public policy, leadership development, and national planning.

He also commended the management and staff of the institute for maintaining their activities despite the security challenges and assured them of the government’s support in enhancing security and ensuring the uninterrupted pursuit of the institute’s mandate.

NDC’s anti-defection policy dubious — Sam Amadi

The Director, Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts, Sam Amadi, had described the anti-defection policy of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, as dubious.

Amadi made this statement on Friday during an interview on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’.

He was speaking on the recent anti-defection policy introduced by the NDC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The policy required candidates seeking elective offices on its platform to sign legal documents committing to vacate their positions if they leave the party after winning elections.

Reacting, Amadi said, “I think this NDC’s anti-defection policy is dubious. The psychology and sense in which the party is pushing this act could be considered as a distrust in its candidates and shows weakness.

“Their focus should be on winning the election and the presidency. Once you win the presidency, the people there will stay with you. And so the history says that once you lose, people will likely go for the winner’s party.

“And so, for me, at this point, it quite doesn’t suggest strength, it doesn’t suggest coherence, it rather suggests distrust of their own candidates.

“So, NDC doing this looks like innovation, but in essence, it’s really a sign of lack of trust on those who are taking the ticket, and a sense of its own weakness.”

Although Balogun did not find the net, the AS Monaco striker played a decisive role in the victory.

His dangerous delivery into the box forced Australian defender Cameron Burgess into an own goal, giving the hosts an early breakthrough in Seattle.

The United States doubled their advantage before halftime through Alex Freeman, whose strike was awarded after a VAR review.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side once again delivered an impressive performance, building on their emphatic 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their opening Group D fixture.

Balogun entered the match brimming with confidence after scoring twice against Paraguay.

His brace in that encounter saw him become the first American player since 1930 to score multiple goals in a FIFA World Cup match, further underlining his growing importance to the team.

With two wins from two matches, the Americans now sit comfortably at the top of Group D with six points and are within touching distance of a place in the knockout rounds.

The achievement is even more remarkable considering captain Christian Pulisic was unavailable due to injury.

Balogun has emerged as one of the standout performers of the tournament.

The 24-year-old striker has provided the cutting edge the United States have long sought on the biggest stage, combining intelligent movement, pace, strength, and clinical finishing.

His rise remains a point of interest for Nigerian football fans. Born to Nigerian parents, Balogun was eligible to represent Nigeria, England, and the United States before ultimately committing his international future to the US in 2023.

That decision is paying huge dividends for the Americans, as Balogun continues to spearhead their attack with distinction on home soil.

With two goals already to his name and another influential performance against Australia, the Nigerian-descent star is rapidly establishing himself as one of the faces of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and a key figure in the United States’ pursuit of a historic tournament run.
