The Tattaaunawa Roundtable Initiative (TRICentre) has called on the government at all levels and all concerned organizations and individuals to take action as it reacts to the recent incessant killings in the Mangu local government area of Plateau State.
TRICentre made this call in a statement made available to newsmen on Friday 19th May 2023.
The statement reads:
The recent killings in Mangu Local Government of Plateau state have left the entire community in shock and mourning. The senseless acts of violence have claimed the lives of innocent people and caused immeasurable pain and suffering to their families and loved ones.
According to reports, the attacks began in the early hours of the morning on May 16th and continued for several hours. The attackers are said to have targeted several communities in the area, setting houses ablaze and shooting indiscriminately at people.
While the government of Plateau state has condemned the attacks in the strongest possible terms and has vowed to take decisive action to bring the perpetrators to justice. Governor Simon Lalong has expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and has assured the people of Plateau state that his administration will do everything in its power to prevent such senseless violence from happening again. We at The Tattaaunawa Roundtable Initiative (TRICentre) want to see the government act.
We are aware that the Plateau State Police Command has also deployed additional personnel to the affected areas to provide security and maintain law and order. The Command has urged the people of Plateau state to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies as they work to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attacks. While this is commendable, we believe that this should go beyond rhetoric and that months after this, we want to get updates.
We are calling on all citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. We are appealing to community leaders and other stakeholders to work together to promote peace and unity in the state.
The killings in Mangu Local Government of Plateau state are a tragic reminder of the need for all Nigerians to come together to address the root causes of violence and insecurity in our country. We must work together to build a society where every citizen can live in peace, security, and dignity.
The killings in the Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State are a complex issue that requires a multifaceted approach to tackle. As a stakeholder TRICentre suggests the following short and long term actions and approaches to address the situation:
1. Improve security: The first step towards addressing the killings is to improve security in the affected areas. This can be done by increasing the number of security personnel and providing them with adequate equipment and resources to carry out their duties effectively. Additionally, the government can work with community leaders to set up community policing initiatives that involve local residents in maintaining security in their communities.
2. Dialogue and reconciliation: The government and community leaders should initiate dialogue and reconciliation efforts among the different ethnic and religious groups in the affected areas. This can help to reduce tensions and promote peaceful coexistence between the communities.
3. Economic empowerment: The government can promote economic empowerment programs that will provide employment opportunities and boost economic growth in the affected areas. This can reduce poverty and create a sense of belonging among the residents, which can help to reduce the likelihood of conflict.
4. Education and awareness: The government can also promote education and awareness programs that will promote tolerance, understanding, and respect for diversity among the different ethnic and religious groups in the affected areas. This can help to reduce the likelihood of conflict and promote peaceful coexistence.
5. Justice and accountability: The government should ensure that those responsible for the killings are brought to justice and held accountable for their actions. This will help to deter future incidents and promote a sense of justice and fairness among the affected communities.
It is important to note that these suggestions are not exhaustive, and addressing the killings in Mangu LGA and other parts of the state and off course Nigeria will require a sustained effort and commitment from all stakeholders involved.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims during this difficult time, and we stand in solidarity with the people of Plateau state as they mourn their loss.
A frontline governorship aspirant in Plateau State under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hon. Jude Dakur, has officially picked the party’s nomination form ahead of the 2027 governorship election, pledging to prioritize grassroots development, security, and economic growth if elected.
Dakur obtained the nomination form on Tuesday, May 13, 2026, signaling his formal entry into the race and expressing confidence in securing the party’s ticket during the forthcoming primaries.
Speaking shortly after obtaining the form, the governorship hopeful said his ambition is driven by a desire to reposition Plateau State for inclusive growth and sustainable development.
He assured supporters that his administration would focus on improving the welfare of citizens and ensuring equitable distribution of resources across the state.
According to Dakur, Plateau State possesses enormous mineral and agricultural potential that must be properly harnessed to drive economic prosperity, particularly in rural communities.
He described mining and agriculture as key pillars of the state’s economy, stressing that strategic investment in the sectors would create jobs and boost internally generated revenue.
On mining activities, Dakur stated that rather than imposing outright restrictions, his administration would create a safe and conducive environment for both artisanal and professional miners to operate effectively.
He added that proper regulation, enforcement of safety standards, and support for miners would help curb illegal mining activities and address related security challenges.
Addressing insecurity in Plateau State, Dakur pledged to adopt a multi-dimensional strategy that would involve stronger collaboration with security agencies, improved intelligence gathering, and support for community-based security initiatives.
He also promised to tackle unemployment and poverty through targeted youth empowerment programmes, noting that engaging young people productively remains vital to achieving lasting peace and development in the state.
BY SUNDAY SAMUEL—The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed reports circulating across various media platforms regarding casualty figures from a recent air-land operation conducted in Zamfara State, describing them as misleading and unverified.
In a statement signed by Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, and shared via the official X account of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the DHQ clarified that the operation was carried out on May 10, 2026, by troops of the Joint Task Force (North West), Operation FANSAN YAMMA, targeting a confirmed gathering of terrorist leaders at Tumfa Village in Shinkafi Local Government Area.
According to the statement, the location was identified through credible, multi-source human intelligence as a coordination point for planned attacks on communities in the North West region. The DHQ explained that the operation involved an air interdiction strike, noting that such missions do not allow for immediate and precise ground-level casualty counts.
It added that figures currently being circulated in the media, including those attributed to both local and international outlets, are speculative and unverified. The official position of the Armed Forces, the statement stressed, remains that several terrorists were neutralised, based on a Battle Damage Assessment conducted after the strike.
The Defence Headquarters also addressed claims of civilian casualties, stating that no credible or substantiated evidence has been established through official assessments or independent verification. It maintained that the identified target was a known terrorist structure occupied by armed non-state actors posing a direct threat to civilian populations.
The DHQ further urged those making such allegations to rely on verified evidence rather than unconfirmed social media reports or hostile sources, warning against narratives that could undermine ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
Reaffirming its operational standards, the Armed Forces of Nigeria stated that all operations are conducted under strict Rules of Engagement and in line with International Humanitarian Law, including the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution. It emphasized that civilians are never targeted and that measures are consistently taken to avoid civilian harm.
The statement added that ground troops are continuing exploitation and clearance operations in the area, while members of the public are advised to rely only on official communications from the Defence Headquarters for verified updates.
The DHQ also assured that any confirmed incidents involving civilian casualties would be duly communicated in line with directives on transparency and professionalism in military operations.
