Former Rivers governor Rotimi Amaechi has condemned the deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Palm Sunday, which left many residents killed and others injured.

The politician expressed sadness over the deadly attack in a statement on Tuesday, accusing President Bola Tinubu’s government of utter failure to protect lives and property.

“How long must the people of Plateau wait for relief? How long must Nigerians endure sleepless nights, living in fear of violence and death?” Mr Amaechi asked, expressing sadness over the incident.

“The Tinubu-led government has failed to confront this menace with the boldness and seriousness it demands,” said Mr Amaechi. “Enough of the callousness. These are human beings, our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and children being slaughtered daily while those entrusted with the duty to protect lives and property look the other way.”

Mr Amaechi boasted that he had successfully fought insecurity as a governor, charging the Tinubu-led government to address the menace decisively and immediately.

“Insecurity, the killing of innocent citizens by criminals, bandits, and other non-state actors, must be addressed decisively and immediately. Tomorrow is too late.

“We proved in Rivers State that criminality can be fought and defeated. It can be done in Nigeria too. Enough of the excuses. Enough of the negligence. Nigerians deserve safety, peace, and dignity,” he added.

Following the latest attack, the Plateau government imposed a 48-hour curfew on the Jos North LGA, effective from midnight on March 29 to April 1, 2026.

Mr Tinubu also condemned the attack as cowardly and barbaric and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Meanwhile, the Christian Association of Nigeria and Amnesty International lambasted the government for issuing useless press statements one after another without corresponding action to rein in rampaging bandits and terrorists.

Chief Operating Officer of the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, Davidson Owumi, has said the pre-season tournament in Jos will provide Nigeria’s representatives in CAF club competitions with an ideal opportunity to adequately prepare for their continental campaigns.

League champions Rangers International, runners-up Rivers United, and President Federation Cup winners El-Kanemi Warriors are among the teams participating in the pre-season tournament in Jos.

The competition also features two wildcard teams from the host state, Plateau United and Mighty Jets, while Katsina United received a late invitation to replace Shooting Stars.

“Considering that our season would be commencing a few days before the CAF club matches, the NFF and NPFL resolved that it would benefit the clubs to have their players participate in a competitive tournament to further deepen their fitness and cohesion,” Owumi was quoted as saying by the NPFL media.

The 2026/27 NPFL season will kick off on Friday, August 28, 2026.
