The Plateau State Police command has arrested some of its officers who were accused of extorting N100,000 from journalists in Jos, the state capital.
Confirming the development on Tuesday, the state Police Commissioner, CP Okoro Julius, said the arrested officers are attached to the anti-kidnapping unit of the state’s police command.
The complainants had approached the command to allege that some officers extorted the sum of N500,000 from them on October 15, 2023.
The police commissioner, who intervened in the matter, however, said the command found out during investigation, that the officers had collected N100,000 and not N500,000 as reported by some media outlets.
CP Julius said the money has since been recovered and returned to the complainants.
In a statement made available to newsmen, the spokesperson of the state command, DSP Alabo Alfred, said:
“Following the allegation of extortion by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit (AKU) attached to the Plateau State Police Command reported by one Victor Ayeni of the Punch Newspaper on the 15th October 2023 with the headline, ‘ Policemen invaded our estate, force us to pay N500,000- Jos residents’, the Plateau State Command has investigated the claim, identified the deviant officers, recovered exhibits and handed them over to the complainants.
“In a bid to ensure that the matter is given the urgent attention that it deserves, the commissioner of police Plateau State Command, CP Okoro J. Alawari, pcs on the 16th October, 2023, invited the complainants, namely; Audu Michael and Bitrus Zakka to his office where the erring officers were paraded and interviewed before them.”
The PRO further stated,“But contrary to the Punch report, one of the complainants, Audu Michael voluntarily disclosed to the Police that the Punch reporter, Victor Ayeni misrepresented and exaggerated the fact by reporting that AKU operatives extorted the sum of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500,000) instead of One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000) as alleged by the complainant, Mr Audu Michael.
“The Police boss who frowns at the unprofessional conduct of the affected officers assures Plateau residents that his administration will not harbour bad eggs in his Command. He therefore ordered the *OC Provost* of the Command to commence the orderly room trial of the officers with immediate effect.”
Alfred added that the police commissioner has urged the general public to always report Police unethical conduct to the Police Public Relations Department and Complaints Response Unit (CRU) of the command for prompt attention.
Social commentator and businessman, Isaac Fayose, has claimed that the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, would comfortably win the 2027 presidential election in Abuja.
Fayose made the claim on Tuesday while appearing on News Central TV, amid a recent statement by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, that the opposition lacks popularity in the nation’s capital.
Wike had, during an interview, described the 2027 election as an easy contest, insisting that President Bola Tinubu would win both Rivers State and the FCT.
However, Fayose disagreed with the minister, asserting that “Abuja is NDC, Abuja is Peter Obi.”

Fayose stressed that there was nothing else the ruling party could do other than “write results”, but said they had plans to prevent any alleged attempt to rig the election.
According to him, the NDC has put strategies in place to ensure that the election is not manipulated by anyone.
“People are ready to vote. All we are scared of now is what angle are they going to suppress us from this time? This is the only area we are trying to fine-tune.
“Go to the street and try to talk to one or two people. Ask them, ‘Who are you going to vote for?’
“Abroad, before the proper election, they seek people’s opinions on who they want to vote for through mock elections. We don’t do that in Nigeria, but we need to start doing it,” he said.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has reiterated the Nigerian Army’s commitment to enhancing operational readiness and personnel welfare.
Shaibu stated this on Monday at the operationalisation of refurbished operational vehicles and the renovated Soldiers’ Club named, “Nightingale Club” of the Nigerian Army Women Command (NAWC), Giri, Abuja.
The COAS, represented by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, said serviceable vehicles were critical to the timely movement of personnel, equipment and logistics.
He said the refurbishment of the vehicles would significantly enhance the Command’s ability to respond promptly and effectively to operational requirements.
According to him, mobility remains a critical component of military effectiveness, particularly in supporting troops during operations.
He urged personnel entrusted with the vehicles to treat them as valuable government assets by ensuring proper maintenance, responsible handling and strict adherence to extant regulations.
Shaibu also stressed the importance of personnel welfare, saying a military organisation was sustained not by equipment alone, but also by the morale and cohesion of its personnel.
He said the Soldiers’ Club would provide an avenue for relaxation, recreation, social interaction and strengthening of esprit de corps among personnel and their families.
The COAS urged the Command to sustain the culture of maintenance, accountability, discipline and prudent management of resources.
He commended the leadership and personnel of NAWC for the initiative, saying the projects demonstrated what could be achieved through effective leadership and collective commitment.
Earlier, the Commander, NAWC, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Adamu, said the refurbishment was in line with the COAS’s Command Philosophy of ensuring operational readiness.
Adamu said the Command had a responsibility to ensure that its personnel could be mobilised and deployed at short notice whenever required to support military operations.
He recalled that on April 14, 2026, the COAS directed the deployment of a company from the Command to Plateau State following security challenges in the state.
According to him, the Command was able to mobilise and deploy the troops promptly because it had the necessary operational mobility and other enablers.
He said the experience underscored the importance of maintaining operational vehicles in serviceable condition at all times.
Adamu said four refurbished coaster buses previously in deplorable condition were being operationalised to enhance the Command’s mobility and capacity to respond to operational assignments.
He also said the renovation of the Soldiers’ Club was part of the Command’s commitment to the Soldiers First Concept, which places the welfare of soldiers at the centre of command responsibilities.
The commander said the facility had previously been in a deplorable condition, with inadequate lighting and poor sanitary facilities.
He said its rehabilitation had provided soldiers with a more conducive environment for relaxation, social interaction and receiving guests.
“Anything we do under the leadership of the Chief of Army Staff that does not put soldiers’ welfare first is not in keeping with the Soldiers First concept,” she said.
Adamu urged commanders at all levels to prioritise the welfare of soldiers, noting that motivated personnel were better positioned to deliver effectively on assigned responsibilities. (NAN)
