Eight people freed from bandits after gunfight in Plateau forest: Army

Troops of Sector 9 under Operation ENDURING PEACE have rescued eight kidnapped victims from Pandam Forest in Qua’an Pan council area of Plateau state.

The operation was disclosed on Friday in a statement by the troops’ spokesperson, Chinonso Polycarp Oteh.

According to the statement, the troops were deployed to Namu on Wednesday to conduct an offensive.

“The operation was conducted at approximately 3:00 a.m., following credible intelligence regarding the presence of kidnappers in the forest,” he said.

According to him, the troops engaged the bandits in a firefight as the bandits attempted to flee.

“Utilising the ensuing chaos, three of the kidnap victims managed to escape earlier from the kidnappers’ custody.

“Subsequent exploitation and thorough combing of the forest by the troops led to the rescue of an additional five abducted victims, bringing the total number of rescued individuals to eight,” he said.  

Mr Oteh said the rescued hostages would soon be reunited with their families. He added that troops are pursuing the fleeing kidnappers to apprehend or kill them.

‘I’m a victim of Ibadan Circular Road project’ — APM guber candidate, Adekanmbi

The gubernatorial candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi, has declared that he is one of the victims of the Ibadan Circular Road project.

Adekanmbi made the declaration while addressing journalists on Thursday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

DAILY POST reports that construction of the Ibadan Circular Road started during the tenure of the immediate past governor, Abiola Ajimobi.

Our correspondent reports that several properties, including houses and other structures, have been demolished as a result of the project.

The development prompted some of the affected residents to stage protests to express their grievances.

Adekanmbi, while addressing journalists, explained that he was also affected by the project.

He said his property in Ona Ara Local Government Area was among those affected by the project.

He described the situation as painful but said the project would be in the interest of the majority of the public.

Adekanmbi further explained that he would not be a stooge of Governor Seyi Makinde but would also not betray him.

Adekanmbi said: “I am a victim of the Ibadan Circular Road. I have a landed property in Ona Ara; it was consumed by the project.

“I just spoke with the affected victims. I am also one of the people affected by the Ibadan Circular Road. It is not easy. I am pained, but there is nothing I can do. If there will be development, it will affect some people, and I am one of them. I am also affected.

“I am not Fubara. I came from a good home. I cannot assassinate Seyi Makinde’s character. I will not be an ingrate. I am not like Fubara.

“I will do the right thing. If they tell me to put my hand in fire, will I do it? No. I will not do it. But I will not be an ingrate. I will not be a stooge of Makinde.”

Plateau United Face Early NPFL Setback as New Season Gets Underway

Plateau United have made a difficult start to the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, suffering a 2–0 defeat away to Rivers United on Matchday One.

The Jos-based side were unable to find the back of the net at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, with Abdulrasheed Dabai and Wasiu Falolu scoring for Rivers United to secure all three points for the hosts.

The defeat leaves Plateau United 19th on the 20-team NPFL table, with zero points, no goals scored and two conceded after the opening round of fixtures. Only Sporting Lagos sit below them, also without a point and with a -2 goal difference. (npfl.com.ng)

A difficult opening

Plateau United’s opening-day loss comes after the club finished 10th in the 2025/26 NPFL season, recording 15 wins, five draws and 18 defeats from 38 matches. They scored 39 goals and conceded 40, finishing the campaign with 50 points.

Their final league fixture of last season, however, ended on a positive note, as Victor Dawa scored in stoppage time to give Plateau United a 1–0 home victory over Kano Pillars on May 24.

The new campaign has therefore begun in contrasting fashion, with the team needing to quickly rediscover the resilience that helped them finish the previous season in the top half of the table.

Home opportunity against Kwara United

Plateau United will have an immediate opportunity to respond when they host Kwara United at the New Jos Stadium on Sunday, September 6.

The Matchday Two fixture is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., according to the official NPFL fixtures.

Kwara United also opened their campaign with a draw, playing out a 2–2 stalemate against Kano Pillars. They currently occupy ninth position with one point.

For Plateau United, the encounter represents more than an opportunity to register their first points of the season. A convincing home performance could provide an early psychological lift and prevent the team from becoming trapped near the foot of the table.

After one match, Plateau United’s numbers are straightforward:

The 2026/27 NPFL season only began on August 28, and the league is already showing how quickly fortunes can change. Plateau United will hope that their opening-day disappointment proves to be a temporary setback rather than the beginning of another difficult campaign.
