The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has expressed concern about his safety ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying he is not certain he will be alive by the time of the election.

Obi made the statement during an interview on Arise TV on Thursday.

The former Anambra governor said he had been petitioned and investigated in different places.

He added that he was unsure of what could happen to him.

“As I speak to you, I have also petitioned, I’ve been investigated everywhere. I still hear that I’m not even sure whether I’ll still be alive at the end of this,” he said.

Obi said he was relying on God for protection and appealed to politicians to allow a peaceful and democratic environment ahead of the elections.

“I’m praying to God for His protection because at this stage, I’m not sure what is happening,” he added.

He also called on governors to allow presidential candidates and other political contestants to campaign freely.

According to him, governors had the right to support candidates of their choice but should also give room for others to participate.

“Some of them will be campaigning for presidency tomorrow. They will be campaigning for other offices tomorrow. Let’s have peace,” he said.

Obi recalled his experience as governor of Anambra State, saying he allowed politicians from other parties to campaign in the state even when they were supporting his opponents.

The Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency (PEPSA) condemns the obstruction and threats faced by some of its personnel while carrying out a market sanitation exercise around the Chobe/Yankaji area of Jos.

The sanitation exercise was part of the Agency’s routine responsibility to ensure that public spaces, markets and areas where food and other essential commodities are handled meet acceptable sanitation and environmental health standards.

The exercise was conducted alongside leaders of the market, as part of ongoing efforts to engage stakeholders and ensure that sanitation responsibilities are understood and carried out by market operators.

The Yankaji area, which serves as an important location for the preparation and sale of meat to residents of Plateau State, has raised significant sanitation and environmental health concerns. Despite repeated attention to the need for proper sanitation, the operators of the Yankaji market have not adequately cleaned up their premises.

When PEPSA personnel arrived to carry out the sanitation exercise and discharge their lawful responsibilities, the market operators stopped them from carrying out the work. The situation escalated, with the officials subjected to threats and intimidation, requiring security personnel to intervene and safely evacuate the PEPSA team and the market union officials from the premises.

In the process of getting the PEPSA personnel out of the area, one person sustained an injury and is currently receiving medical attention in the hospital. The person is being properly taken care of, and the Agency is monitoring the situation.

PEPSA considers this development deeply concerning.

Government officials carrying out lawful duties should not be subjected to intimidation, threats or mob action. A society cannot function effectively when individuals or groups prevent public officers from performing responsibilities established by law.

The Agency recognises that sanitation enforcement can sometimes generate disagreements or require engagement with affected individuals and businesses. Such disagreements should be addressed through dialogue and established legal channels, not through threats, intimidation or physical obstruction.

PEPSA therefore calls on traders, market leaders, residents and all stakeholders to remain calm and refrain from any actions that could further escalate the situation. The public is urged to remain calm and allow the relevant authorities to address the matter appropriately.

The Agency appreciates the security personnel who responded to the situation and helped secure the safe evacuation of its staff.

PEPSA will continue to discharge its statutory responsibilities across Plateau State. The protection of public health and the environment cannot be compromised, and the Agency will not allow acts of intimidation or mob action to undermine lawful sanitation and environmental protection activities.

The Agency urges members of the public, market leaders and operators to cooperate with government officials and support efforts aimed at creating cleaner, safer and healthier communities.
