The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disowned a fake online publication claiming to be a special announcement on governorship candidates in six states.

Politics Nigeria reports that the commission identified the affected states as Zamfara, Gombe, Delta, Plateau, Yobe and Kano.

It urged members of the public to disregard the publication and rely on its verified communication channels for electoral information.

INEC said the publication did not originate from the commission and described it as fraudulent.

“The Commission wishes to categorically inform the general public that the publication is FAKE and did not originate from INEC,” the statement partly read.

“INEC therefore urges members of the public to disregard the fraudulent publication and refrain from sharing it.”

The commission’s warning comes amid concerns over the omission of several candidates from its final list of governorship candidates for the 2027 elections.

In Kano State, the Kwankwassiyya Movement has vowed to engage INEC over the omission of Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) deputy governorship candidate, and his principal, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, from the final list.

Habibu Mohammed, spokesperson for the movement, said the omissions came as a shock, insisting that the candidates had met the requirements for registration.

Speaking on Arise Television, Mohammed said the movement would explore the legal provisions available to candidates whose names were omitted from the commission’s list.

“It came as a shock because there had been no issue with INEC. Kwankwas, a former deputy governor, is registered with the NDC and met the stipulated deadline,” he said.

He added that electoral provisions allow affected candidates 14 days to seek redress over omissions from the list.

“We will explore that opportunity and engage with INEC,” Mohammed said.

The spokesperson maintained that the movement was unaware of any court judgment or order that could have justified the omission.

He expressed confidence that the matter would be resolved through engagement with the commission and the available legal procedures.

The NDC has also described the omission as an error and said it is seeking a correction.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has also begun engaging INEC over the omission of its governorship candidates in Ogun and Gombe states.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, saying the party was working towards an amicable resolution in line with the law and established electoral guidelines.

He assured affected candidates, members and supporters that the party was treating the matter seriously and would communicate further developments when necessary.

The PDP also urged those affected to remain calm and exercise patience while discussions with the commission continued.

This was just as the party warned against actions or statements that could undermine the ongoing engagements with INEC, stressing its commitment to addressing the concerns through lawful means.

INEC released its final list of candidates for the February 6, 2027 governorship elections on Saturday.

The list, signed by the commission’s Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, and published on its website, contained 13 candidates in Ogun State and 16 in Gombe State, with no PDP candidate listed in either state.

Among those omitted were Ladi Adebutu, the PDP candidate in Ogun State, and Isa Ali Pantami, the party’s candidate in Gombe State.

The inauguration, held on Monday, November 2, 2026, at the Government House, Rayfield, Jos, brought together party leaders, political stakeholders and campaign coordinators to begin mobilisation for the re-election of Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, as well as Governor Mutfwang, Deputy Governor Ngo Josephine Piyo and APC candidates contesting National and State Assembly seats in Plateau State.

Speaking at the event, Mutfwang expressed appreciation to the people of Plateau for their support, acknowledging that although his administration had recorded progress in key sectors, significant challenges remained.

He argued that his government deserved another term to consolidate ongoing projects and programmes, describing development as a continuous process that requires consistency.

“There is no government that ends everything. Every government is a relay. Our duty is not to make others look bad; it is to see how we can collectively make Plateau State look better,” he said.

On security, the Governor acknowledged persistent challenges but assured residents that his administration was pursuing sustained measures to protect lives and property.

He disclosed that plans were underway to facilitate the safe return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their communities, while announcing that another batch of retrained Operation Rainbow personnel would soon be commissioned alongside the deployment of at least 800 trained forest guards to vulnerable communities.

Mutfwang urged residents to remain patient and support government efforts towards restoring peace across the state.

Addressing the economic situation, the Governor defended the economic reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration, noting that the country needed time to overcome longstanding fiscal and structural challenges.

He also highlighted interventions by his administration to ease the impact of economic hardship, including the introduction of Tin City Metro buses, revival of rail services within the metropolis, a 50 per cent reduction in tuition fees in state-owned tertiary institutions and a 300 per cent increase in student allowances.

He further acknowledged the benefits of the Federal Government’s student loan and scholarship programmes in supporting Plateau students in tertiary institutions.

On party unity and mobilisation, Mutfwang urged APC candidates and stakeholders to put aside political differences, embrace humility and work collectively towards the party’s success.

He stressed that electoral victories were determined at the grassroots, urging campaign council members to return to their respective wards, constituencies and local government areas to mobilise voters.

“The votes are in the polling unit. They are not in Jos. Everybody can only matter in the locality where you come from,” he stated.

The Governor also charged members to conduct campaigns with respect for political opponents, insisting that the party’s message should be communicated through constructive engagement, honesty and clear presentation of government policies and achievements.

Earlier, the Director-General of the Mutfwang/Piyo 2027 Governorship Campaign Council, Sir Joseph N. Ari, KSM, KSS, OON, expressed appreciation to the Governor for the confidence reposed in him and other members of the council.

Ari pledged that the campaign would be driven by discipline, teamwork, effective coordination and responsibility, assuring that the council would adopt an issue-based approach devoid of bitterness and political acrimony.

He commended the Governor’s “Time Is Now” policy direction, particularly its emphasis on unity, mutual respect and development, describing peaceful coexistence as essential to the state’s progress.

The campaign DG disclosed that the council had received expressions of support from 115 support groups, in addition to solidarity visits and assurances from traditional rulers, religious leaders, women, youths and other organised groups.

He, however, emphasised the need for collective participation and strategic engagement with communities across the state to achieve the party’s objectives.

Ari also called on party supporters and residents to turn out en masse on November 14, 2026, to welcome President Tinubu, Vice President Shettima, APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, and other national party leaders during their scheduled visit to Plateau State.

In his remarks, the Plateau State APC Chairman, Hon. Rufus Bature, described the inauguration as a significant step towards building a coordinated political structure ahead of the 2027 elections.

Bature emphasised the importance of grassroots mobilisation, loyalty, effective communication and accountability, noting that the party’s electoral success would depend largely on the strength of its structures across polling units.

He charged members of the campaign council to remain committed to their responsibilities and avoid complacency, adding that the party remained open to accommodating more stakeholders as preparations for the elections progressed.

2027: Fresh ‘Tinubu Must Go’ Protest Rocks Zamfara

Hundreds of youths on Monday took to the streets of Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, in a fresh protest against President Bola Tinubu, displaying T-shirts bearing the inscription, “TINUBU MUST GO”.

The reportedly demonstrators gathered at the popular Freedom Square, a major junction connecting several roads within the metropolis, attracting the attention of motorists and other commuters.

Videos from the protest showed young men and women dressed in white T-shirts bearing the anti-Tinubu message as they chanted solidarity songs.

Several female protesters, many wearing colourful hijabs, were seen standing along the roadside, while groups of male demonstrators moved around the area, with some riding motorcycles.

A vehicle equipped with a public address system was positioned at the centre of the gathering. A cameraman was also seen standing on its roof, recording the demonstration.

The protest disrupted traffic around Freedom Square, leaving commercial tricycles, motorcycles and private vehicles struggling to move through the area.

However, the organisers had yet to publicly explain the reasons for the demonstration as of the time of filing this report. Security agencies were also yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

The latest demonstration comes amid growing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections and renewed public opposition to the Tinubu administration.

In October, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar called for the immediate release of five Nigerians reportedly arrested in Borno State over T-shirts bearing the same inscription, “Tinubu Must Go”.

Atiku argued that wearing a political slogan should not constitute an offence in a democratic society.

In a statement issued by Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communication of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, the former vice president questioned the circumstances surrounding the arrests.

Atiku recalled that Tinubu had supported Nigerians protesting against fuel prices under former President Goodluck Jonathan but was now presiding over a cost-of-living crisis marked by rising fuel, food, transportation and electricity costs.

Meanwhile, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has defended Tinubu’s economic policies, arguing that the president inherited an economy on the verge of collapse when he assumed office in 2023.

Mutfwang made the remarks on Monday at the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council in Jos, where he urged Plateau residents to support Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

According to the governor, the previous administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari left the country in a difficult economic situation, with dwindling foreign reserves, mounting debt obligations and an inability to meet certain international financial commitments.

“Where did President Tinubu meet Nigeria in 2023? He met Nigeria, tottering on the brink of collapse, Nigeria that could not service its external debts, Nigeria that would not even allow businesses outside the country to take their proceeds back home,” he said.

He claimed that Nigeria’s external reserves had fallen to slightly above $3 billion from more than $40 billion accumulated over the years, adding that the figure had now risen above $50 billion.

Mutfwang also accused the previous administration of printing more than N30 trillion to manage the economy, insisting that the Tinubu government had stabilised the Central Bank of Nigeria.

On the removal of fuel subsidy, the governor described the previous arrangement as fraudulent, alleging that public funds were used to settle claims backed by fictitious documents.

“I say it was a fraud because we were borrowing money to pay people who brought fictitious documents. They never brought any wealth. They brought fictitious documents, claimed monies and subsidies,” he said.

He acknowledged that fuel had become more expensive under the current administration but maintained that its availability had improved.

“Today, by the grace of God, we have solved one side of the equation. Today fuel is available. It may not be cheap, but it is available,” he said.

The governor further alleged that the Buhari administration had sold crude oil in advance, leaving the country with outstanding obligations that the current government was now servicing.

Despite defending the federal government’s economic policies, Mutfwang said his administration had introduced measures to ease the impact of the economic situation on Plateau residents.

He cited the introduction of metro buses, the revival of the railway system within Jos metropolis and a 50 per cent reduction in tuition fees for students in tertiary institutions.

He also said the state government had increased students’ allowances by about 300 per cent.

Mutfwang commended the Tinubu administration’s Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), saying hundreds of millions of naira had been disbursed to Plateau indigenes studying in different universities.

According to him, some beneficiaries receive N20,000 or N40,000 monthly under the scheme.

On the 2027 political contest, the governor backed power rotation between the North and South, arguing that the South should be allowed to complete another eight-year tenure after the North’s previous eight years in office.

“We must agree that power should rotate between the North and the South. And if the North spends 8 years, which we have nothing to show for, it is only fair that we allow the South to do another 8 years,” he said.

He also declared that there would be no vacancy in the Plateau State Government House ahead of the 2027 governorship election, insisting that the existing power-sharing arrangement among the state’s senatorial zones should be respected.

The governor urged APC candidates and campaign council members to take their message to voters with facts and avoid actions that could deepen political divisions.

He expressed confidence that Tinubu would win Plateau State in the January 16, 2027 presidential election, adding that residents would also renew his administration’s mandate two weeks later.
