David Umahi, a former governor of Ebonyi State and Minister of Works, has pushed back against criticisms of President Bola Tinubu’s government over heightened insecurity in the country, saying that God will rescue the abducted schoolchildren in captivity.

Mr Umahi, in a viral video seen on social media on Friday, berated Nigerians for politicising and weaponising insecurity and insulting Mr Tinubu as if insecurity started under his administration.

“What is in national discuss now is the issue of security and insecurity. When people talk about insecurity, especially extreme politicians, and insult the President as if insecurity just started within the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it is very unfortunate,” Mr Umahi said.

The minister wondered why insecurity heightens in the country in the run-up to elections, adding that prayers should be intensified for the release of the abducted schoolchildren.

“Security is the job of everyone. Security should not be politicised. Why is it that anytime we are approaching elections, there is heightened insecurity? It is very unfair. Anyone who takes the life of another person under any guise, God is watching,” Mr Umahi said.

He added, “We will continue to pray for all our children, who are in captivity. God sees them, wherever they are hidding. Their hands will be losen by God. And they will return.”

Mr Umahi’s statement comes amid public outrage and criticism of Mr Tinubu over the abduction of 46 schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State on May 15.

For more than 20 days, the abductees have remained in captivity, sparking protests across major cities in the country, including Lagos, Ibadan, Ogbomosho, Abeokuta, Bayelsa and Plateau.

Former presidential media aide, Bashir Ahmad, has claimed that Plateau-based pastor, Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, made remarks that were worse than the controversial comments attributed to Islamic cleric, Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir.

Jingir, while speaking in Kano State on Saturday, had reaffirmed his support for a Muslim-Muslim ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The cleric reportedly argued that the decision by the All Progressives Congress, APC to field a Muslim-Muslim ticket was justified by the numerical strength of Muslims over Christians in the country.

He also referred to Christians as infidels and claimed that Nigeria belongs to Muslims, remarks that have sparked widespread condemnation and calls for his arrest.

Reacting to the controversy, popular television host, Rufai Oseni, in a post on his official X handle on Tuesday night, questioned what the reaction would have been if a Christian cleric had made similar remarks.

“If a Christian cleric had said what Jingir said,” Oseni wrote.

However, responding to the post, Ahmad argued that Dachomo, a Christian cleric, had previously made comments that were even more offensive.

“It is not a competition, Rufai, but I can tell you that Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo has said things that were even worse. Both utterances are wrong,” Ahmad wrote on X.

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has put its full arsenal and all resources into a last-ditch charge to ensure the Super Falcons qualify for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup through a second ‘window of opportunity’ that lies in a qualification play-off versus South Africa.

Sports247 reports that, heading into Thursday’s decisive match in Rabat, Morocco, the NFF came out with an open letter of apology and declaration of purpose to propel the female national team towards a consolation victory at the ongoing 14th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Victory over South Afirca on Thursday will keep the Falcons’ World Cup hope alive, though they would still have to face two more games during an intercontenental play-off later in the year, and the NFF appealed for total support from all Nigerians to seal the ticket.

The football governing body’s epistle published on Tuesday, was narrated through their president, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, on behalf of the NFF executive committee, the Super Falcons and entire Nigerian football family, with apologies, deepest regrets and appeals.

It started with a direct apology to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the Falcons’ loss, then moved to expressions of disappoinment and acknowledgement of failure, while noting that the NFFF owes gratitude to ‘everyone who prayed, encouraged, travelled, watched and stood behind the Super Falcons.’

The NFF’s lengthy open letter stated in part, “Sincere apologies to the Government and people of Nigeria, following the Super Falcons’ failure to secure a direct qualification ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“The team went into the competition carrying the hopes of the nation and the enormous goodwill and support of the Federal Government, and we regret that we were unable to deliver the result expected at this stage.

“We wish to extend a special and heartfelt apology to His Excellency, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for this disappointment.

“A window of opportunity remains through the CAF play-off pathway, and the Super Falcons are determined to fight for one of the two available CAF play-off tickets and subsequently pursue qualification through the FIFA play-off tournament.

“We must now regroup, learn from this setback and focus completely on the opportunity that remains. The NFF, the Falcons’ technical team and players are committed to doing everything within their power to secure Nigeria’s place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“Our resolve is to ensure that the Super Falcons return stronger, fight harder and do everything possible to make Mr. President, the Federal Government and Nigerians proud once again.

“We sincerely thank Nigerians for their unwavering support and urge everyone to continue to stand with the Super Falcons, as we pursue the remaining route to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027.”
