The countdown to the 2025 Nzem Berom Cultural Festival was officially flagged off today as His Majesty, Da Jacob Gyang Buba, the Gbong Gwom Jos, declared the festival season open at the Lala Berom Village held today Monday 28 April 2025, located within the Jos Museum. The event marks the commencement of activities leading to the grand Nzem Berom Festival scheduled for Friday, May 2, 2025, at the Jos Polo Field.

The declaration ceremony drew distinguished sons and daughters of the Berom Nation, traditional rulers, and well-wishers, all gathered under the theme: “Celebrating the Prowess, Gallantry, and Resilience of the Berom Woman: Past and Present.”

Senator Simon Mwadkwon, Chairman of the Nzem Berom Main Planning Committee, in his remarks, emphasized that today’s event officially kicks off the festival season, with several activities lined up. Highlights included a preliminary beauty contest, a showcase of local cuisines from various Berom districts, and a cultural display supervised by His Majesty, who toured and endorsed the traditional culinary exhibitions.

“This year’s celebration focuses on honoring the resilience, progress, and contributions of Berom women across generations,” Mwadkwon stated. He noted that dignitaries such as the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, governors from neighboring states including Taraba, Nasarawa, and Benue, as well as the Minister of Women Affairs, are expected to grace the grand festival.

President of the Berom Educational and Cultural Organization (BECO), Da Gyang Dudu, described the flag-off as a significant moment for the Berom people. “It is a privilege to be part of this historic effort to reshape and advance the narrative of Berom cultural evolution,” he said, while urging the public to attend the main festival on May 2, promising an unforgettable experience.

Also speaking at the event, Ngo Sarah Ochekpe, former Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Assistant Chairman of the Main Planning Committee, called for greater emphasis on women’s recognition and empowerment, aligning with the festival’s theme.

The event’s highlights featured a vibrant cultural fashion show presented by various Berom districts and a tour of traditional dishes prepared by representatives from across Berom communities, setting a festive tone for the activities to come.

Troops Rescue Six Abducted Travellers in Plateau, Search Ongoing for Missing Driver

Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) rescued six travellers abducted by suspected kidnappers along the Hawan Kibo–Rafin Sanyin Road in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The rescue operation followed a swift response by troops of Sector 6 Operation Enduring Peace after receiving a distress call in the early hours of Friday.

According to the Media Information Officer of Operation Safe Haven, Captain Polycarp Oteh, troops immediately mobilised to the area and successfully rescued six of the abducted victims, while efforts continue to locate the remaining victim, identified as the driver of the vehicle.

“At the early hours of today, troops of Sector 6 Operation Enduring Peace responded to a distress call on a kidnapping incident and swiftly mobilised, successfully rescuing six out of the kidnapped victims,” Oteh said.

“Deliberate effort is currently ongoing to rescue the driver. There is no cause for alarm. Troops are on top of the situation.”

The incident occurred when suspected kidnappers reportedly intercepted a vehicle conveying passengers from Lafia, Nasarawa State, to Jos, Plateau State.

On arrival at the scene, troops discovered an ash-coloured Honda vehicle abandoned by the roadside with its occupants missing.

A search-and-rescue operation was immediately launched in the surrounding bushes, leading to the successful rescue of six victims identified as Ibrahim Usman, Ali Ibrahim, Sabiu Idris, Private Ibrahim Musa, Hamisu Abubakar and Joshua Johanna.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims were travelling from Lafia to Jos when their vehicle was intercepted by the kidnappers along the route.

Security sources said intensive search operations are continuing in the area to locate the missing driver and prevent further criminal activities along the highway.

Operation Safe Haven said troops remain on high alert, with routine patrols ongoing across the Joint Operations Area to protect communities and critical infrastructure from security threats.
