The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has cleared former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and 470 other candidates presented by David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, for the 2027 general elections.

The INEC National Commissioner, Mohammed Haruna, made this known on Tuesday, noting that the commission will recognise only the candidates submitted by the David Mark-led leadership.

Haruna added that the commission granted the Mark-led leadership access to its candidate nomination portal following the Supreme Court judgment affirming its leadership of the party.

The INEC senior official further stated that the faction has already submitted candidates for 471 elective positions, comprising one presidential candidate, 109 senatorial candidates and 360 House of Representatives candidates.

“Yes, we gave the Mark-led faction the code based on the recent Supreme Court judgment that affirmed his leadership of the party and the faction has since submitted most of its candidates for a total of 471 – presidential (1), senatorial (109) and House of Representatives (360) constituencies.

“The court, however, did not say we should accept any submissions by the rival faction which, in any case, had lost its appeal for recognition,” he said.

According to him, INEC would study the Certified True Copy of Monday’s Court of Appeal judgment before taking an official position on its implications.

“INEC cannot say anything until we see the judgment. We have to see the details of the judgment first. Hopefully, in the next two days, within 48 hours, the court should release the judgment. We will study it, and then the commission will take a position,” he added.

The 2027 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, Omoyele Sowore, says he will never travel abroad for medical treatment if elected.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Sowore said any sickness he could not treat in Nigeria should kill him.

He also said he was committed to not bringing family liabilities to Nigeria if he eventually became president.

According to the presidential candidate, he would focus on working for the Nigerian people without using the Presidency for personal or family gain.

“Any sickness that I can’t treat in Nigeria when I become president should better kill me. I can tell you that for free.

“I’m not bringing family liabilities back to Nigeria. There is no office of First Lady in the Nigerian Constitution. Becoming president will not abolish my marriage, but I will not have the office of First Lady.

“Women will be heard, but I don’t believe that you need a First Lady who is holding an unconstitutional position and just wasting money that is meant for progress and projects,” he said.

“We Still Have a Lot to Improve” — Busari Refuses to Get Carried Away After Flamingos’ 5-0 Rout

Flamingos head coach Akeem Busari has refused to get carried away by Nigeria’s emphatic start to the WAFU-B U-17 Girls’ Cup, insisting his players still have plenty to improve despite thrashing Niger Republic 5-0.

Nigeria began their campaign in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, in commanding fashion, with five different players finding the net as the defending champions secured three points and a clean sheet.

Captain Harmony Chidi opened the scoring in the 16th minute before Awawu Bashiru doubled the advantage before half-time.

The Flamingos then turned the contest into a rout late on, with Ohunene Sunday, Mary Dunstan and Ayomide Rotimi adding three more goals.

But Busari believes the scoreboard should not disguise the lessons his players still need to learn.

The coach expressed satisfaction with the result but maintained that Niger were not pushovers, adding that his team must continue improving as they prepare for tougher challenges.

His reaction fits with his pre-tournament position that the WAFU-B competition is about more than winning matches.

Busari had described the tournament as an important opportunity to identify the Flamingos’ strengths and deficiencies before the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

He also believes the standard of women’s youth football across Africa is rising rapidly, warning that African teams could become increasingly difficult opponents at major international competitions in the coming years.

For the Flamingos, therefore, five goals and three points represent an encouraging beginning rather than a finished product.

Nigeria’s next test comes against Ghana on Saturday, another World Cup-bound side, in what should provide Busari with a stronger indication of his team’s progress.

The message from the coach after a five-star opening was simple: enjoy the victory, but keep working — because the bigger tests are still ahead.
