The Plateau State police command has arrested some female students over a viral video showing them allegedly attacking another female student in the Pankshin Local Government Area of the state.

The command spokesman, SP Alfred Alabo, disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Jos.

MrAlabo said the state Commissioner of Police,  Ayodeji Faniyan, directed the area commander in Pankshin to investigate and arrest those involved immediately.

“Immediately the CP got wind of it, he directed the Area Commander in Pankshin LGC to act immediately, which they have done,” he said.

Mr Alabo said the arrested students would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) after preliminary investigations.

He added that the suspects would subsequently be charged in court after the conclusion of investigations.

He condemned the alleged attack, describing jungle justice and other forms of violence as criminal offences.

He said recording and uploading violent acts on social media could also expose perpetrators to additional criminal charges, including cybercrime related offences.

“In the process of committing this crime, sometimes you will commit several other crimes. It is not just you beating somebody or meting violence against your fellow human being; even having the mind to record it is cybercrime,” Alabo said.

He urged youths and other residents to refrain from taking the law into their hands, irrespective of the circumstances surrounding any disagreement.

“Learn to report to a third party that has the authority to hear your matter and give you the justice that you deserve,” he said.

Mr Alabo urged residents to report grievances and criminal incidents to the police or other appropriate security agencies rather than resorting to violence.

He also appealed to members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies.

He said such information would enable security agencies to promptly intervene and prevent situations from escalating.

Mr Alabo reiterated that the arrested students would be transferred to the state CID and subsequently charged in court after investigations.

“Steer clear of jungle justice. Report cases anytime you are aggrieved to the right and appropriate authority,” Alabo said.

The girls are students of the Federal University of Education in Pankshin.

As preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general election, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has described the bye-elections conducted across Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states as essential operational benchmarks for evaluating the nation’s electoral infrastructure.

During remarks delivered on Saturday while directly overseeing operations at the Commission’s National Situation Room at its headquarters in Abuja, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, underscored that no electoral contest should be regarded as insignificant.

The commission conducted four significant legislative bye-elections in the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State; Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State; Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi State and Udu State Constituency in Delta State.

Amupitan, who maintained that every off-cycle election functioned as a vital preparatory exercise for nationwide elections, stated: “These four bye-elections furnish indispensable operational insights for the Commission as we methodically establish our strategic direction toward the 2027 General Election.”

“We must refrain from the inclination to characterise any exercise as merely a routine bye-election. Every election constitutes a fundamental element of our comprehensive preparations for the 2027 General Election, enabling us to consistently review our logistics infrastructure, validate our technological systems, and assess administrative field preparedness,” he said.

The INEC chairman, accompanied by National Commissioners and senior management personnel, supervised the bye-elections as operational reports were transmitted from field locations.

Amupitan assured Nigerians of the Commission’s commitment to preserving electoral integrity, emphasising that operational challenges identified prior to polling were promptly addressed and rectified.

“Our fundamental responsibility in the Situation Room encompasses monitoring and preventive crisis management.

“Any administrative or field difficulties that emerged before election day were effectively managed by the Commission at their inception,” the Chairman stated.
