Plateau United Defeat Enyimba 1-0 in Final NPFL Match of the Season

Enyimba International FC of Aba wrapped up their 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign with a 1-0 home defeat to Plateau United on Sunday at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba, Abia State.

Yusuf Abdullahi netted the only goal of the match in the 41st minute, giving the visitors a crucial lead before halftime.

On resumption from the break, Enyimba players fought to salvage a point from the match but their efforts was fruitless as the visitors defence stood tall till the final whistle.

Coach Mangut Mbwas of Plateau United, said his team faced a lot of difficulties in the course of the season having been deducted three points and three goals which put them in disarray.

“We are pleased to have picked the three points against a big club like Enyimba, and I believe we will do better next season,” Mbwas said.

Plateau United captain Charles Henlong, thanked God for a successfull season but said he was disappointed for not getting a continental slot which was the players resolve before the season.

“Now that the season is over and we finished strongly with a win against Enyimba in their home shows that next season will come with something good,”he said.

Paschal Eze, Enyimba captain, said the result was not what they wanted as the match was the last for the season and they have every reason to give the fans something to be excited about.

“It is unfortunate that we lost the match which we are not supposed to ,”Eze said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Enyimba ended the season on sixth position on the table with 55 points while Plateau United finished on seventh with 54 points after 38 matches.

Nigerian table tennis prospect Matthew Kuti has set his sights on winning two gold medals for the country at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, as he intensifies preparations for the competition.

Kuti is targeting victory in both the men’s singles and mixed doubles events, expressing confidence in his preparation while acknowledging the technical demands of table tennis at the highest level.

“Thinking game is a very difficult game and it’s very scientific game. So I’m very, very happy that I participate in today’s game,” Kuti said.

The young Nigerian explained that his ambition is to represent the country successfully in Dakar, where he hopes to compete across multiple events and convert his preparations into gold medals.

“My challenge is to go there and take a gold for Nigeria, play many tournament and also there is mixed doubles in Dakar and singles. I want to win the two,” he said.

Kuti acknowledged that achieving the double target would require commitment and hard work, noting that he is currently in training as he works towards peak performance for the Games.

“So I will try my best. I will try what I can do because now I’m in training. So I will try my best,” he added.

The Youth Olympic Games will take place in Senegal from October 31 to November 13, 2026, bringing together young athletes from across the world in a multi-sport competition.

For Kuti, the tournament represents an opportunity to test himself against international opposition and contribute to Nigeria’s medal ambitions. His focus on both singles and mixed doubles reflects his determination to make the most of the opportunities available to him in Dakar.

With preparations ongoing, the Nigerian youngster will be hoping that his training, tournament experience and determination can translate into strong performances when the competition begins.

Nigeria Crowned African Scrabble Champions as Jimoh Leads All-Nigerian Podium

Nigeria has emerged champions of the 16th African Scrabble Championship in Monrovia, Liberia, after Abdulmumin Jimoh claimed the individual title and the country secured the Best Country award ahead of Kenya and hosts Liberia.

Jimoh produced a remarkable comeback to top the 110-player field, finishing with 23 wins and a cumulative spread of 1,760 points. His compatriot and reigning Nigerian national champion, George Ezinore, also recorded 23 victories but settled for second place with a spread of 1,005 points, while Emmanuel Umujose completed an all-Nigerian podium in third position.

Jimoh demonstrated resilience throughout the four-day competition. He finished the opening day in 12th position with five wins before climbing to third on day two. Despite dropping to sixth on day three, he mounted a late charge to move into contention for the title.

A crucial victory over Larry Etuwa in round 31 strengthened his position at the top of the standings. Although he lost his final game to Ezinore, Jimoh’s accumulated spread proved decisive in securing the continental crown.

His triumph continues Nigeria’s strong tradition in African Scrabble and sees him succeed clubmate Oluwatimilehin Doko, who won the championship in Kigali two years ago. Doko endured a difficult campaign in Monrovia after falling ill during the competition.

Nigeria’s success extended beyond the individual standings, with the country claiming the Best Country award to underline its dominance at the continental championship.

Reacting to the achievement, President of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation, Engineer Bright Idahosa, commended the athletes for their outstanding performances and praised the National Sports Commission (NSC) for its support of Nigerian sports.

“I commend our players and the Federation in general for the determination shown throughout this tourney and for flying Nigeria’s flag high on the continental stage. This achievement reflects the talent, commitment and competitive spirit within Nigerian Scrabble.”

“I also sincerely appreciate the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, for their support. The Director-General consistently called to enquire about our results, assess our progress and discuss the way forward. This demonstrates genuine passion and intentional leadership in Nigerian sports,” Idahosa said.

In the women’s category, Ghana’s Betty Kyeremateng emerged Best Female Player after recording 20 wins from 32 games. Nigeria’s Sophia Ekeruche, recognized as the World’s Best Female Junior Player in 2025 and 2026, finished second in the female standings with 18 wins.

The Nigeria Scrabble Federation is expected to build on the achievement as it continues efforts to sustain the country’s success at continental and international competitions.
