RB Leipzig of Germany’s Nigerian-born winger, Antonio Eromonsele Nordby Nusa popped into global limelight on Monday night, following his stunning goal for Norway in their 2-1 victory over Cote d’Ivoire at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

Sports247 reports that several posts flooded social media in the wake of Nusa’s sizzler, which became Norway’s first knock out stage goal in World Cup history – after 88 years of trying – and he was duly named man of the match.

Nusa’s performance on the night blossomed into huge stats for him, which included 100% successful long balls, all of his shots on target and three ball recoveries, as the dazzler pulled off one of this World Cup’s best individual performances.

It turned out to be a truly defining moment for the 21-year-old fast-rising star, who started his career at Langhus, then moved to Stabæk’s youth section at the age of 13 and later signed his first professional contract at the same club in May 2020.

In the summer of 2021, Nusa signed a contract with Club Brugge of Belgium and scored a goal during his UEFA Champions League debut, which came in a 4-0 win away to FC Porto of Portugal on September 13th, 2022.

That made him become the youngest Norwegian player to feature in the UCL and second youngest of any nationality to score in the elite clubs’ competition, following which he later signed a five-year contract to join Leipzig on August 13th, 2024.

Two years on, Nusa has become a major talking point in his father’s country (Nigeria), the nation of his birth (Norway) and across the world at large, following Tuesday night’s heroics by the youngster fondly called ‘Norwegian Neymar.’

As a flood of accolades continues trailing the Nigerian-born ace, a post on X by renowned football transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano noted, “Antonio Nusa makes history for Norway: first goal at WC knockout stages in 88 years!”

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), supported by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), is strengthening emergency response through community engagement training in Gombe.

The three-day training, which began on Tuesday, focuses on improving risk communication, community listening, social behaviour change, and preparedness during humanitarian emergencies.

The programme brought together state-level emergency preparedness and response actors from Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Plateau, Taraba, and Yobe states for practical capacity building.

Declaring the training open, Godwin Tepikor, NEMA director of planning, research and forecasting, said effective community engagement remained critical to strengthening disaster preparedness and emergency response.

Mr Tepikor, represented by Hajiya Umuna Ahmed, head of operations at NEMA Bauchi/Gombe Office, appreciated UNICEF for its continued partnership in strengthening disaster preparedness and emergency response.

He said increasing frequency and complexity of disasters made clear risk communication, community listening, misinformation management, and appropriate protective actions essential components of effective emergency response.

Mr Tepikor said participants would develop practical skills for ensuring early warning information reached communities promptly, credibly, and in actionable forms to support timely protective decisions.

According to him, strong risk communication and community engagement systems enable communities to understand risks, make informed decisions, and take early action to protect lives and livelihoods.

He described the training as an important platform for collaboration among states’ emergency management agencies, ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), humanitarian partners, and other relevant stakeholders.

Mr Tepikor urged participants to exchange experiences, share good practices, strengthen partnerships, and apply acquired knowledge to improve risk communication and community engagement within their respective states.

He added that the initiative would ultimately be assessed by participating institutions’ ability to translate acquired knowledge into practical actions that improve preparedness and strengthen community resilience.

Also speaking, Margaret Shoyemi, UNICEF social and behaviour change officer for emergency, public health and humanitarian action, said the programme was designed to strengthen state-level emergency preparedness.

She said the training would improve participants’ capacity in preparedness, community engagement, accountability to affected populations, and effective use of data to guide community-based actions.

Ms Shoyemi explained that UNICEF’s involvement was particularly important because emergencies inevitably affected women, children, families, and communities, requiring responses that addressed their specific needs.

She noted that Nigeria faced several humanitarian challenges, including seasonal flooding, disease outbreaks such as Lassa fever and cholera, displacement, and other emergencies.

According to her, strengthening emergency responders’ capacity was essential to ensuring that the needs of women and children were properly identified and addressed during crises.

She also called for stronger coordination among agencies involved in emergency response, noting NEMA, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), and the National Orientation Agency (NOA).

Former presidential media aide, Bashir Ahmad, has claimed that Plateau-based pastor, Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, made remarks that were worse than the controversial comments attributed to Islamic cleric, Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir.

Jingir, while speaking in Kano State on Saturday, had reaffirmed his support for a Muslim-Muslim ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The cleric reportedly argued that the decision by the All Progressives Congress, APC to field a Muslim-Muslim ticket was justified by the numerical strength of Muslims over Christians in the country.

He also referred to Christians as infidels and claimed that Nigeria belongs to Muslims, remarks that have sparked widespread condemnation and calls for his arrest.

Reacting to the controversy, popular television host, Rufai Oseni, in a post on his official X handle on Tuesday night, questioned what the reaction would have been if a Christian cleric had made similar remarks.

“If a Christian cleric had said what Jingir said,” Oseni wrote.

However, responding to the post, Ahmad argued that Dachomo, a Christian cleric, had previously made comments that were even more offensive.

“It is not a competition, Rufai, but I can tell you that Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo has said things that were even worse. Both utterances are wrong,” Ahmad wrote on X.
