Gunmen terrorizing parts of plateau state have kidnapped the Executive Chairman of Kanke local government area of Plateau State, who is also the State Secretary of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Hon. Henry Gotip.
The honorable was said to have been kidnapped at his residence at Kwang in Jos south Local Government Area of the state after a sporadic shooting by the gunmen to scare away the residents.
It was gathered that about ten gunmen stormed the residence of the chairman in the early hours of Wednesday and whisked him away and the family is yet to be contacted by the abductors. Meanwhile, governmental activities at Kanke local government are presently on hold over the incident.
A source close to the family disclosed that the gunmen who arrived in the community at about 1:00 am released several gunshots into the air to announce their arrival.
“The gunmen, suspected to be Fulani militia, went straight to the chairman’s house and demobilized his security men before entering the main house. He was kidnapped at gunpoint before they whisked him to an unknown destination,” said the source.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Plateau State Police Command, ASP Alfred Alabo, confirmed the incident to newsmen, saying the Command had deployed a tactical team to search for him and ensure his safe return.
He said, “The Police Commissioner is on top of the situation as he has sent a team of police officers to the area who are working in collaboration with the vigilante to rescue the Council Chairman.”
