Nigeria’s Green Hawks will turn their attention to Zambia on Tuesday as the country’s first-ever national netball team continues its historic campaign at the Africa Netball Cup and 2027 Netball World Cup African Qualifiers in Nairobi, Kenya.
The encounter presents Nigeria with another opportunity to measure its progress after a demanding welcome to international netball against three established African sides.
Nigeria began the competition with a 61–40 defeat to hosts Kenya before facing world number six Uganda, who recorded a 68–30 victory.
The Green Hawks then suffered an 82–22 loss to Malawi on Monday, leaving the Nigerian side still searching for its first victory of the tournament.
Against Malawi, Nigeria trailed 21–6 after the opening quarter before the gap widened to 40–11 at half-time.
Malawi eventually completed the contest with a 60-goal advantage and, in the process, strengthened their World Cup qualification campaign.
For Nigeria, however, the tournament represents more than immediate results.
The Green Hawks are competing internationally for the first time, with the Nairobi tournament providing the players with their first sustained exposure to some of Africa’s leading netball nations.
Nigeria’s next opponents, Zambia, therefore offer another test of how quickly the newly assembled side can adjust to competition at continental level.
With matches against Kenya, Uganda and Malawi now behind them, Tuesday’s encounter provides the Green Hawks with another opportunity to translate the experience gained from those difficult fixtures into an improved performance.
The Africa Netball Cup and World Cup African Qualifiers continue in Nairobi until September 26.
The Social Democratic Party, SDP, Imo State chapter, has appointed Robinson Nwachukwu Duru as its acting chairman following a resolution by the party’s chairmen forum, comprising all LGA chairmen across the state’s 27 local government areas.
In a press statement issued after a meeting held recently in Owerri, the forum’s secretary, Anthony Opara, said Duru’s appointment was necessitated by the manner in which the former State Executive Committee was managing the affairs of the party.
He added that the inability of the State Working Committee, SWC, to provide effective leadership prompted the forum to pass a vote of no confidence in all its members over alleged gross incompetence.
Opara said that, to fill the leadership vacuum, the forum unanimously appointed Duru, who was the party chairman in Nkwerre LGA, as acting state chairman, while he was appointed acting secretary.
The SDP said the new leadership had been mandated to oversee the affairs of the party and reposition it for future political participation.
The forum also condemned what it described as anti-party activities, including wearing the insignia of other political parties to SDP meetings, warning that such conduct would no longer be tolerated.
It urged members to remain committed, saying the party was working to ensure that a credible candidate emerged as its flag bearer in the next governorship election in the state.
A moment of exchange between Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and his predecessor, Rochas Okorocha, during the APC presidential campaign rally has drawn public attention.
In a video circulating online, Okorocha is heard calling out to Uzodimma, asking, “Governor Hope, didn’t you see me?” apparently suggesting that the governor had failed to acknowledge or greet him.
Uzodimma, however, responded, “You’re a small boy,” amid handshakes and laughter.
The exchange, which appeared to be friendly banter and a light-hearted greeting, comes days after the Federal High Court in Abuja nullified Uzodimma’s emergence as the APC candidate for Imo West Senatorial District in the 2027 elections and declared Okorocha the winner of the party’s May 18 senatorial primary.
