A businessman in Jos, Plateau State, Alhaji Kamal has accused a medical doctor of harvesting one of his wife’s kidneys and subjecting the woman to chronic pain in the last five years.

He narrated that sometime in 2018, his wife, Kehinde complained of stomach ache and she was rushed to the said doctor’s clinic in the Nasarawa Gwong area of Jos North local government area where he diagnosed the wife and concluded that she had appendicitis that had ruptured and needed urgent surgery.

Speaking with newsmen on the phone on Wednesday night, Kamal, a resident of the Rikkos area of Jos North said, “About eight years ago, my mum was sick so she was directed and she visited a hospital owned by one Dr. Noah Kekere at Yanshanu, Nasarawa Gwong community of Jos North local government area and in the process of going to the see my mum in the hospital, I got acquainted with the doctor.

“When my wife fell sick in 2018, complaining of severe stomach pain, my mum encouraged us to take her there because my wife used to follow my mum to see the doctor when my mum was sick. As we got there, the doctor did a scan and said my wife had a ruptured appendicitis and must be operated upon immediately and he charged us N140,000. When I called some people to ask about the high bill as I planned to take her to JUTH, they advised we should just go ahead and save her life.

“The doctor asked how much I had and I said N80,000, apart from other charges for drugs but after the operation, my wife was still complaining about the pain and the man kept collecting money from me all these years. The day the doctor conducted the operation, he started the operation from 12 pm till 8 pm and for the past five years, my wife kept complaining of severe stomach pains, I continued to take her to the same hospital because I did not want to change the doctor that started the treatment. As she continued to have the pains, I decided to go to the Jos University Teaching Hospital, JUTH a few days ago where we discovered that one of my wife’s kidneys was removed.

“We reported the matter to the Police at Nasarawa Gwong and the doctor was arrested two days ago. This morning the case was transferred to the Commissioner of Police. The Commissioner discovered that the man had never been a doctor but he had been parading himself as a doctor for over 18 years treating people in the area. He has a B.Sc in Economics and a Masters degree in Economics. He attended a nursing school but he did not complete it. He said he did Community Health.”

The spokesman of the State Police Command, Alfred Alabo could not be reached at the time of this report for comments but Kamal however pleaded for justice for his wife and others who might have been victims of the alleged quack doctor.

Controversy trails NYSC’s plan to replace khaki with local fabric

By Agnes Bature

Controversy has trailed the National Youth Service Corps’ plan to replace its iconic khaki uniform with local fabric, as corps members and stakeholders continue to debate the proposed change.

Some stakeholders who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, said the move would promote Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and strengthen the local textile industry.

Others, however, argued that the traditional khaki uniform remained a symbol of unity, discipline, and the identity of the scheme.

Mr Yakubu Isaiah, a corps member, said that Nigerian fabric was distinct and could project the country’s culture globally.

“Wearing a local fabric as part of the NYSC uniform will showcase our culture to the world and make corps members stand out, instead of wearing another military-style uniform,” Isaiah said.

He added that large-scale production of the Nigeria local fabric for the scheme would create employment opportunities for local artisans, particularly women involved in textile production.

Another corps member, Miss Blessing Iwu, expressed reservations about the proposal, noting that the khaki uniform was durable and ensured uniformity.

“Khaki is strong and looks the same on everyone. Local fabric fades more easily, tears faster, and different production batches may have varying shades,” Iwu said.

She also expressed concern that quality local fabric could be more expensive if not subsidised by the government, forcing corps members to spend more on additional uniforms.

Miss Chidimma Chinedu, a resident of Beggar’s Yard, Abuja, supported the proposal, arguing that locally produced fabric would reduce dependence on imported materials.

Chinedu said that replacing khaki and some imported uniform materials with locally made fabric could help reduce import costs, conserve foreign exchange, and support local industries.

According to her, local fabric is also lighter and more breathable than khaki, making it more suitable for Nigeria’s hot climate, particularly during orientation camp.

Similarly, Mr Ayoola John, a corps member serving in an engineering firm in Abuja, said the adoption of local fabric would give the NYSC scheme a distinctive Nigerian identity.

John said that passing-out parades, community development service activities, and official photographs would better reflect Nigeria’s cultural heritage and foster greater national pride.

Miss Hamzat Osigwe, a graduate of Agricultural Science, University of Jos, however, cautioned that the success of the proposal would depend largely on its implementation.

“Some young people fear it may become another policy that is poorly implemented. If the local fabric supplied is of poor quality or distributed late, it will create unnecessary challenges during orientation camp,” Osigwe said.

She also argued that the khaki uniform symbolised discipline, unity, and national service, adding that replacing it with a cultural fabric could alter public perception of the scheme.

NAN reports that the proposal was first announced by the Minister of Youth Development, Mr Ayodele Olawande, who suggested replacing the traditional khaki uniform with locally produced fabrics.

NAN reports that the idea is to promote Nigeria’s textile industry, create jobs, and retain government spending within the country.

The announcement, however, sparked widespread reactions on social media, particularly on X, with many Nigerians expressing divergent views. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has denied reports that its Osun State chapter has collapsed its structure to support the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate, Mr Bola Oyebamiji, ahead of the August 15, governorship election.

Recall that a factional Osun SDP Chairman, Mr Remi Omidire, had purportedly adopted Oyebamiji for the poll, in a letter addressed to the APC State Chairman, Alhaji Tajudeen Lawal..

Reacting to the development in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos, the Chairman of SDP State Chairmen in Nigeria, Mr Femi Olaniyi (Ferrari), said the Osun chapter of the party remained intact and had not endorsed any political party or candidate.

Olaniyi said the letter, purportedly signed by Omidire, was false and did not emanate from the authentic leadership of the party in Osun under the leadership of Mr Funsho Fabiyi.

Describing it as the handiwork of mischief makers aimed at misleading the public, Olaniyi, said the Fabiyi-led party leadership had neither collapsed its structure nor entered into any alliance with the APC or its governorship candidate.

He maintained that the party remained committed to contesting the governorship election.

“The Osun State chapter of the SDP has not, and will not, collapse its structure for any political party. SDP is not for sale,” he said.

Olaniyi cautioned those behind the alleged fake news to desist from spreading false information or face legal consequences.

“We warn all perpetrators of this fake news to desist immediately or face the full wrath of the law,” he said.

He reiterated that the SDP remained committed to its mission of rescuing Osun State through the democratic process.

He urged party members and supporters to disregard the report, insisting that the SDP remained focused on its campaign ahead of the governorship election.
