Transport Infrastructure Key to Peace, Prosperity – Gov. Mutfwang

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has described the transformation of transport infrastructure as more than just a developmental project, but a catalyst for peace, integration, economic prosperity, and job creation.

The governor made this known while declaring open the North-Central Zonal Conference of the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIoTA), held in Jos, the state capital. He was represented at the event by the Head of Service, Mr. Stephen Gadongs.

Delivering his remarks on the conference theme, “Transforming Transport Infrastructure for Sustainable Economic Development,” Mutfwang said:

“For us in Plateau State, the transformation of transport infrastructure is not just a matter of development; it is a catalyst for peace, integration, economic prosperity, and job creation. A well-connected Plateau is a prosperous Plateau.”

He stressed that no economy can thrive without a robust transport system, noting that efficient logistics reduce the cost of goods, connect markets, boost tourism, and attract investments. According to him, the state government is prioritising road rehabilitation, exploring rail linkages, and modernising both urban and rural transport systems.

The governor also commended CIoTA for championing professionalism and policy advocacy in Nigeria’s transport sector, noting that the expertise and recommendations from the conference would help strengthen policy implementation and inter-state collaborations.

In his remarks, Dr. Segun Obayendo, President/Chairman of Council, CIoTA, lamented that the transport sector in Nigeria remains largely unregulated, allowing unqualified players to dominate and slow down its growth. “If the transport sector is properly professionalised and regulated, there will be safety, security, predictability, affordability and sustainability,” he stated.

Earlier, Plateau State Commissioner for Transport highlighted the government’s efforts to modernise the sector through Plateau Express Service Limited, which currently operates intra-city transport. He disclosed plans to extend mass transit buses to the 15 other LGAs for subsidised transportation and to promote cleaner alternatives.

He added that the state government, under Governor Mutfwang, is committed to attracting private sector investment through public-private partnerships (PPPs) in terminal development, haulage systems, and intercity bus parks.
