Supreme Court Upholds APP’s Registration, Ends Deregistration Battle Ahead of 2027 Elections

BY NKECHI NAECHE-ESEZOBOR—The Supreme Court has brought an end to the legal dispute over the status of the Action Peoples Party (APP), affirming that the party remains duly registered and eligible to take part in the 2027 general elections.

The apex court struck out Appeal No. SC/CV/248/2026 after the appellant, Mr Blessing Elujiuba, voluntarily withdrew the case, bringing the challenge to a close.

This decision leaves intact earlier judgments delivered by both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal, which had upheld the party’s legal recognition.

The ruling was delivered on May 12, 2026, by a five-member panel of the Supreme Court led by Justice John Inyang Okoro, who noted that the matter was withdrawn without objection from other parties.

The court subsequently dismissed the appeal following its withdrawal, formally ending the proceedings at the apex level of the judiciary.

The case involved the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Action Peoples Party (APP), and the party’s National Chairman, Uche Kingsley Nnadi.

The initial legal action had sought to force INEC to remove APP from its register on the allegation that it failed to meet constitutional requirements under Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution.

However, earlier rulings had found that APP met the necessary legal conditions for continued registration, citing evidence of electoral participation and victories at local government level.

The courts also upheld the interpretation that fulfilling any of the conditions outlined in Section 225A is sufficient for a political party to retain its registration status.

With all tiers of the judiciary aligned in its favour, APP’s legal standing remains intact, clearing the party to continue preparations for the 2027 elections without any outstanding court challenge.

The comprehensive overhaul features newly constructed academic blocks, paved internal roads and upgraded learning facilities, alongside modern ICT infrastructure and industry-grade equipment supporting robotics, mechatronics, coding and programming.

Beyond its infrastructural renewal, GTC is pioneering specialised learning pathways in Science and Technology, Building and Architecture — covering trades such as bricklaying, electrical installation, plumbing and roofing — as well as Industrial Agriculture.

Significantly, GTC is the first of eight planned model Science, Technical and Vocational Schools, with one envisaged for each of Enugu State’s eight federal constituencies. Otedola recalls sharing bunk bed with Hamzat 49 years ago

Femi Otedola, the chairman of First HoldCo Plc, has revealed that he shared a bunk bed with Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat during their boarding school days 49 years ago.

Mr Otedola disclosed this in a post on X after hosting a dinner in honour of his longtime schoolmate, Mr Hamzat, attended by Aliko Dangote, the president of Dangote Group, and Abdulsamad Rabiu, the chairman of BUA Group.

The business tycoon said Mr Hamzat’s character has been defined over the years by honesty, sincerity, fairness, and strong moral principles.

“Yesterday, I hosted dinner in honour of @DrObafemiHamzat, the incoming Governor of Lagos State,” Mr Otedola said.

“A man of the highest integrity, with whom I shared a bunk bed at boarding school 49 years ago,” he added.

Mr Otedola stated that his longstanding relationship with Mr Hamzat has given him insight into the deputy governor’s character and values.

“My experience of his character over the years has been defined by his honesty, sincerity, fairness and strong moral principles,” Mr Otedola said.

He, however, did not disclose the name of the boarding school he attended with the Lagos State deputy governor.

The billionaire investor has interests in financial services and oil & gas. He holds about 27.7 per cent of First HoldCo’s shares, following months of steadily increasing his stake in the banking group.

Mr Hamzat is seeking to contest the 2027 governorship election in Lagos State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and has served as deputy governor under incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu since 2019.

He emerged as the APC governorship candidate in May 2026.

Mr Hamzat served as Lagos State Commissioner for Science and Technology and later as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure from 2005 to 2015.
