The Plateau Business Owners Council (PLABOC) has strengthened its relationship with the Plateau State Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Hospitality, following a strategic engagement aimed at creating new opportunities for businesses and strengthening public-private sector collaboration across the state.

The PLABOC delegation led by its President Mr Kim Ndoh held a productive meeting with the Honourable Commissioner, members of the Ministry’s administrative team and Directors to explore ways business owners can participate in government programs and contribute to the growth of Plateau’s tourism, culture and hospitality ecosystem.

The visit was also aimed at understanding government initiatives affecting businesses, identifying areas of collaboration, and establishing a stronger working relationship between PLABOC and the Ministry.

Welcoming the delegation, the Ministry acknowledged the important role of business owners in driving the success of the tourism sector and contributing to the broader economic development of Plateau State.

The Secretary-General of PLABOC appreciated the Ministry for receiving the delegation before introducing members of the team and giving each participant an opportunity to highlight their businesses and areas of operation.

He subsequently explained the purpose of the visit, as outlined in the letter presented to the Ministry, and shared PLABOC’s mission and vision. The President of PLABOC further shed light on the council’s objectives and ongoing plans to bring more business owners across Plateau State under a stronger network of collaboration and support.

The Commissioner expressed delight at seeing a significant number of young entrepreneurs among the PLABOC delegation, noting the importance of youth participation in building the state’s economy.

Government Pledges Support for Business Growth

The Commissioner emphasized the Plateau State Government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment where businesses can establish, operate and expand.

According to the Ministry, government support goes beyond infrastructure development to include policies, systems and mechanisms designed to make it easier for businesses to thrive.

Some of the areas of support highlighted during the engagement include improved access to land and property for business purposes, rebates of approximately 50 percent on certain property-related processes, faster land documentation and processing, and support mechanisms for businesses seeking financing and collateral.

The Ministry also noted ongoing collaboration with financial institutions to improve access to funding for businesses.

The Commissioner encouraged business owners to take advantage of existing government programmes and opportunities rather than relying solely on direct financial assistance from government.

Creative Industry Gets Special Attention

The importance of the creative industry also featured prominently during the meeting.

The Commissioner disclosed that the government is developing support structures aimed at helping creatives build sustainable businesses and compete effectively in local and international markets.

Discussions included plans for a purpose-designed creative facility, known as The Standard Building, which is expected to provide workspace and access to support services for creative entrepreneurs.

The proposed facility is intended to create an environment where creatives can develop their skills, grow their businesses and serve clients locally and globally.

The Commissioner urged creative entrepreneurs to position themselves for opportunities by improving the quality of their products and services while maintaining international standards in professionalism, delivery and customer experience.

December Declared Month of Tourism in Plateau

Another major highlight of the engagement was the announcement that December has been declared the Month of Tourism in Plateau State.

The Ministry encouraged businesses operating within the tourism and hospitality ecosystem to strategically position themselves to benefit from the activities and programmes expected during the period.

The Commissioner stressed that entrepreneurs should not wait for government to provide direct financial support but should identify opportunities created by government programmes and develop products and services capable of meeting the needs of tourists, visitors and participants.

The Ministry also indicated that a comprehensive programme map containing activities planned for the tourism month would be shared with business stakeholders, enabling them to identify areas where they can participate and position their businesses.

The engagement between PLABOC and the Ministry marks an important step towards deeper public-private sector collaboration, with both sides expressing a commitment to creating an environment where Plateau businesses, particularly young entrepreneurs and creatives, can thrive.

The partnership is expected to open up new avenues for collaboration, business participation and economic opportunities while supporting the growth of Plateau State’s tourism, culture, hospitality and wider private sector.

The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress, ADC has explained why it claimed that the All Progressives Congress, APC governorship candidate, Kingsley Ogundu Chinda, is no longer qualified to contest the 2027 election following the recent Supreme Court judgment.

DAILY POST reports that the Supreme Court, in a judgment delivered on September 24, emphasised compliance with Section 77(5) and (6) of the Electoral Act, which requires political parties to submit their verified register of members to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC at least 21 days before conducting their primary elections.

The landmark judgment has sparked a legal debate over the implications of the decision for several candidates vying for the different offices.

Reacting, the Publicity Secretary of the ADC in Rivers State, Chizi Enyi, said the Supreme Court’s verdict has nullified the candidacy of Chinda.

He alleged in a video posted on X that only 19 days elapsed between Chinda’s registration with the party and the submission of its register to INEC.

He said, “on OK Chinda where people are asking whether he is qualified or not, the mandatory notice of which a political party can field candidate is that you must submit your membership register to the INEC at least 21 days before the primary election.

“APC conducted its primary election for national assembly aspirants on May 16 and Chinda joined APC on April 27. Counting from April 27 to May 16, you have 19 days, which is less than the mandatory 21 days’ notice.

“This means that all the House of Representatives candidates of APC may not be qualified to run in the election if APC submitted its register after Chinda joined.

“Before Chinda joined, there was a report on April 24 that APC beat the deadline before INEC extended it to May 10. This means that Chinda joined the party after the register has been submitted to INEC.

“My dear Nigerians, it is an obvious fact that Chinda is not qualified to run in the election. Or is APC telling us that they submitted multiple registers to the INEC”?

Group urges two vets per LG to tackle rabies in Kogi

The Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Kogi chapter, has urged the state government to employ at least two veterinary doctors per local government area (LGA).

The association said the move would strengthen rabies surveillance and the state’s One Health response.

The state chairman of the association, Tolu Omotugba, made the call on Monday in Lokoja at a news conference to commemorate the 2026 World Rabies Day.

World Rabies Day is celebrated annually on September 28.

The aim is to raise awareness about rabies prevention and to highlight progress in defeating this horrifying disease.

Mr Omotugba said Kogi, with 21 LGAs, a large dog population used for hunting and security, and porous borders, could not afford to be complacent about rabies.

According to him, rabies is a disease that is 99.9 per cent fatal once symptoms appear but 100 per cent preventable.

He said, though veterinary officers in the state civil service were putting in their best, their number was grossly inadequate.

“We have about 28 to 30 veterinary officers currently in the Kogi civil service, which is not enough. Some LGAs do not even have the presence of a veterinary officer. Most states in the federation have more than 50 to 100, some about 200.

“We are suggesting a minimum of two per LGA so that they can, at least, do disease reporting, especially for diseases of public health concern.

‘’If the state can do well, they can have as many as five per LGA,” he said.

He expressed concern over the high number of unreported rabies cases in Kogi and across the country.

Mr Omotugba recalled that in 2025, Bassa LGA in Plateau lost 12 lives, including a family of three, to rabies, adding that “a single dog bite, a single scratch, can end a family.”

He said the 2026 theme, “Stronger Together,” underscored the need for collaboration among Ministries of Health, Environment, Education and Livestock, veterinary and medical doctors, environmental health officers and community leaders.

He commended the federal government, through the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development led by Minister Idi Mukhtar Maiha, for its vaccination target.

According to him, the ministry is targeting 70 per cent annual dog vaccination and zero human deaths from rabies by 2030.

The chairman noted that 26,000 doses were deployed to eight high-risk states in 2025, while the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) recently launched vaccination for 20,000 dogs.

Mr Omotugba said that Kogi still relied on outdated laws, citing the Rabies Act of 1935 and the Dogs Law, Cap 36 of Northern Nigeria.

‘’The law provides for seizure and licensing but lacks modern population management and enforcement,” he said.

He said that less than five per cent of dogs in Lokoja, Okene, Anyigba and Ankpa were licensed.

“We cannot eliminate a 21st-century disease with 20th-century laws,” he said.

He, therefore, urged the state government to domesticate the Kogi State Rabies Control and Responsible Dog Ownership Bill 2026 to make annual vaccination compulsory.

Mr Omotugba also called for the establishment of a dog registry, penalties for stray dogs, and replacing shooting on sight with humane management.

He also called for a dedicated budget line for rabies under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project to support free mass vaccination.

He recommended sensitisation and post-exposure prophylaxis in state hospitals, as well as creating a Kogi One Health Rabies Task Force.

“Let Kogi lead as the first state in North-Central to be rabies-free,” he said.
