The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded justice following the killing of seven civilians at a mining site in Wat, Kuru District of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The attack, which occurred on January 21, 2026, has sparked outrage within the party, which described the incident as a tragic and avoidable loss of innocent lives.
In a statement signed on Friday by the State Publicity Secretary, Choji Dalyop, and shared via the party’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the PDP condemned the killings and accused the government of failing in its constitutional duty to protect citizens.
“This is not just another attack; it is a tragic reminder of the government’s egregious failure to provide security,” Dalyop said.
The party warned that the persistent violence across Plateau State continues to erode public trust and poses a serious threat to democratic stability.
Referencing a 2025 fact-finding report commissioned by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the PDP noted that more than 420 communities in the state have suffered attacks, with thousands of residents displaced and nearly 12,000 lives reportedly lost.
According to the report, the violence is often coordinated and deliberate, with attackers frequently crossing into Plateau State from neighbouring states.
PDP’s Demands
The PDP called on the government to take immediate and decisive action, outlining three key demands:
- A transparent and impartial investigation into the Wat mining site killings, with findings made public
- Swift arrest and prosecution of those responsible to ensure accountability
- A clear and actionable security strategy to address insecurity and prevent further loss of life
Dalyop stressed that condemnations without concrete action were no longer acceptable.
“The art of rhetoric and empty condemnations alone will not suffice herein. The people demand action, justice, and a government that prioritises human life over political power,” he said.
The party expressed solidarity with the families of the victims and the affected communities, urging both national and international stakeholders to closely monitor what it described as the resurgence of insecurity and human rights violations in Plateau State.
“The @OfficialPDPNig stands in solidarity with the families of the victims and the affected communities. We urge the national and international communities to continue monitoring the situation for speedy and decisive action,” the statement added.
The PDP warned that failure to act decisively would embolden perpetrators and further weaken public confidence in governance.
“History will not forgive a government that watches idly while its citizens are slaughtered. Justice delayed is justice denied,” Dalyop concluded.
