Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria – A pre-dawn attack by gunmen on Kwahaslalek village in Mangu Local Government Area, Plateau State, has left at least 30 people dead, including vulnerable women and children. This tragedy unfolded despite a 24-hour curfew imposed by Governor Caleb Mutfwang in a bid to quell escalating violence in the region.

The victims, seeking refuge in the home of a community leader after Tuesday’s unrest in Mangu town, were surrounded and brutally killed by the attackers. Community leader Mark Haruna lamented the attack, highlighting the deliberate targeting of vulnerable villages while attention was diverted by the earlier disturbances.

Mwaghavul Development Association Chairman Joseph Gwankat condemned the ruthless act, questioning the lack of adequate security measures amid continuous attacks. He described how the attackers struck under the cover of fear instilled by the day’s events.

Despite the curfew, the attack exposes the persistent security challenges plaguing the state. While Operation Safe Heaven troops responded, arresting looters and recovering weapons, Governor Mutfwang remains deeply concerned about the escalating violence and has vowed to restore peace.

State police spokesperson Alabo Alfred’s initial lack of knowledge about the attack points to ongoing communication issues. Meanwhile, the Special Task Force has addressed baseless accusations against the military, reiterating its commitment to neutrality and protecting lives.

Plateau State, still reeling from the Christmas Eve attacks that claimed over 150 lives, faces a critical juncture. The Mangu massacre demands swift action to ensure the safety of vulnerable communities and restore order. The authorities must address communication gaps, investigate the attack thoroughly, and hold perpetrators accountable to prevent further tragedies.

Key points for Plateau Reports:

  • Focus on the human cost of the attack, highlighting the targeting of women and children.
  • Emphasize the ongoing security challenges despite the curfew and Governor Mutfwang’s vow to restore peace.
  • Briefly mention the lack of immediate police knowledge and the Special Task Force’s statement.
  • Conclude with a call for action to protect vulnerable communities and prevent future tragedies.

Bluesky’s website and app are still struggling on Thursday after experiencing service interruptions that COO Rose Wang attributed to a denial-of-service attack.

According to the social network’s status page, the issues began around 2:42 a.m. ET time on Thursday and have continued since.

Currently, the Bluesky site and app will load at times, slowly, and other times will throw error messages.

For instance, switching to a particular feed within the app displays a message that says “This feed is currently receiving high traffic and is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. Message from server: Rate Limit Exceeded.”

Popular feeds like Discover or the official Bluesky Team’s feed are seeing this problem, though users’ own personal feeds may launch.

Other times, like when trying to visit a user’s profile, the site will just display an error message, forcing you to refresh and try again.

Bluesky protocol engineer Bryan Newbold remarked around 3:46 a.m. ET, “oof, our services are getting pretty hard tonight.”

The company has not officially shared what’s causing the slowdown or provided an estimated time for a fix.

Bluesky has not yet responded to a request for comment.

The service disruptions are impacting Bluesky, but other communities running their own infrastructure on the underlying protocol that powers the decentralized social network appear to be functioning for the time being.
