A bill seeking the creation of additional Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Plateau State has passed second reading in the House of Representatives, marking a significant step toward strengthening grassroots governance and political representation in the state.
The bill, sponsored by Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase, is aimed at addressing long-standing challenges related to accessibility, equity and development across Plateau State.
Presenting the proposal, Wase said the creation of more LGAs would bring government closer to the people, particularly in remote and underserved communities. According to him, smaller and more manageable local councils would improve the delivery of essential services such as primary healthcare, basic education and rural infrastructure, while enabling quicker response to local needs.
The bill also seeks to promote equity and fairness among communities and ethnic groups within the state. Supporters argue that new LGAs would help correct perceived marginalisation, enhance political participation and foster a stronger sense of inclusion. Increased LGAs could also lead to more political offices and greater representation for Plateau State at both state and federal levels.
In addition, the proposal highlights the economic benefits of the move. The creation of new LGAs is expected to increase Plateau State’s share of federal allocations, which are partly determined by the number of recognised local governments. Proponents say the new councils would also be better positioned to harness local resources, develop emerging markets, and promote agriculture and mineral exploitation to drive sustainable economic growth.
With the bill now through second reading, it will be subjected to further legislative scrutiny as it moves through the remaining stages in the House of Representatives.
