The two remaining Nigeria Professional League clubs Rivers United and Plateau United have been drawn against Libyan opponents in the preliminary round of qualifiers for the CAF Confederation Cup.

Plateau United have been drawn against Libyan side Al-Akhdar while NPFL champions Rivers United was paired against El Nasr Benghazi of Libya.

The additional second preliminary round of the 2022/2023 CAF Confederation Cup draw saw the 16 teams that qualified from the second preliminary round of the Confederation Cup play the 16 teams that lost the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.

The draws took place at CAF’s headquarters in Cairo, Egypt on Tuesday 18th October 2022.

Both Rivers and Plateau crashed into the second-tier competition after failing to pick group stage tickets for the CAF Champions League against Wydad Casablanca of Morocco and Esperance of Tunisia.

Similar to their failed Champions League attempt, both clubs will host the first legs of the encounters, before traveling to Libya for the return leg.

Rivers United host El Nasr Benghazi at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt 2nd November, while Plateau United entertain Al-Akhdar at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja same day.

The second leg of the encounters will follow a week later at the respective home grounds of the Libyan clubs.

Crossing this final hurdle for the NPFL sides means they will feature in the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Plateau United delivered one of their most impressive performances of the season, thrashing high-flying Ikorodu City 4–1 in a dominant NPFL encounter to strengthen their position on the table.

The Peace Boys showed intent from the start and maintained control throughout the game, with second-half substitute Ossy Martins emerging as the standout performer after grabbing a brace to seal the emphatic victory.

The result marks a significant boost for Plateau United, who have struggled for consistency this season. Defeating a top-performing side like Ikorodu City not only restores confidence within the squad but also signals their determination to finish the campaign strongly.

Beyond the scoreline, the win could prove pivotal in their push away from the lower half of the table, easing pressure on the team while reigniting belief among supporters.

Attention now shifts to their next fixture, where Plateau United will be aiming to build on this momentum and secure another positive result as the league season approaches its final stages.
